My mom is traveling in China right now, and I want her to buy me a TV series of a DVD.
But she told me that maybe I should buy the VCD version, which has like 50 discs
The reason is that someone in China told her that maybe Chinese DVD won't play in north america. I know there's a region thing in DVD, but can I watch a Chinese DVD in my computer, PS2 or Samsung DVD player here in North America?
Or is the regional setting can't be changed?
You can watch VCDs on your computer but not on any American DVD player including the PS2. Your mom should also buy you an all-regional DVD player in China. They're around 40-60 bucks and can play all sorts of DVD/CVD/MVD/MP3/etc. It's worth it. I just recently came back from Hong Kong and bought over 50 DVDs, all for around $.50, including the latest movies - all very good quality.

Cool. I need an all regional DVD player then, cauz you know how cheap DVD players are in China! :D
One of my friend went to china after graduating college, and after 10 days he had like 30 DVDs in his collection, including the first and second season of the simpsons :P
Anyways, Thanks for the info, guys and gals! :)

BTW, the DVD/VCD I want to buy is Shuihu Zhuan, which is the most bad ASS classical Chinese novels, ever!
If you want to learn about Asian classical literatures, it's very entertaining to say the least.

yes, Shui Huzhuan =the water margin in english.
There's alot of other translations, such as outlaws by the marsh and all men are brothers and something like that. I have only read the Chinese version, but I'm interested in the English translation as well.
For example, 'Hei Xuanfeng' Li Kue would be 'the black whirlwind'
I think in Japanese, Shuihu Zhuan is called Shuikoden.

If you watch DVD's on your computer, there is a nifty program called Region Killer which you can download off the net...
I believe you can buy all-region DVD players from some online stores, also...
Cool, thanks! :)

You can get all-region-dvd players online in America, at yesasia.com. I don't know how competitive the price will be though.

To get the DVD player on your PC to work with all regions you basically need to make your drive region free and your DVD player software region free. This basically means making your drive and software able to switch regions indefinitely. The drives have firmware that limit the amount of times you can switch the region before it locks into a region coding, usually like 5 times. The same is true for DVD software. You can change them a few times before it locks up.
What you need is the versison of the firmware for your DVD palyer that will allow your drive to change regions indefinitely as well as software that will do the same for you DVD playing software.
It a pain to do but well worth it.
You can do a search on google to find what you need.

What do we think of this (http://www.egame-acc.com/PS2/PS2046.htm)? If it works I don't have to mod my PS2.
