CD-ReWritable (CD-RW) devices are getting cheaper and more popular. They let you create backups and store data in a safe format. But people also use them to make illegal duplicates of software and audio CDs. If you had a CD-RW system, would you consider making illegal duplicates? Do you think such copying should be illegal? Defend your answer.

It shouldn't be illegal. As long as you're not selling copies to make money. Even if it was illegal, people will still do it. What's the point? And while it might hurt larger, more popular groups, CD burning and file sharing actually helps a lot of the smaller indie groups get their material out. And I know that it's possible to make it harder for people to download and burn CDs... I've heard the MP3's with those annoying beeps or the ones that just play the chorus over and over again. Ugh, it was so irritating that I just went out and bought the damn CD. Besides, if I really want a CD, I'll buy it. I only burn the ones I don't want enough to buy. So it doesn't really matter.. If I didn't burn it, I usually wouldn't have bought it anyway.

ok, if we cannot make legal backups of our cd's (we were allowed to and are unless the RIAA wins), then the music industry needs to start using scratchproof cd's. as for the movie industry FUCK YOU. if you're movie is too lame for me to watch in the theater and i happen to download it to sample and decide if i actually do want the dvd, then i think you should be a happy fucker that i'm giving it a second consideration and may purchase the dvd. (for the record, i own 93 dvd's) if i take said movie and burn it onto a disc (which i stopped long ago, as i've got a whole pc built to just house movies and music now) so that i may sample your movie and make room for other dvd purchase candidates, you should be happy, as your movie was good enough to make me rethink not buying it. i could have just as easily deleted it if it had sucked.

in all honesty tho, if i like a movie that i had in divx, i will buy it. there are times as a college student where i have to dump money elsewhere, but in having that divx, which will always be VERY inferior to dvd quality, it will remind me to get it.

i have some friends in the music industry who preach to me about file-sharing and burning CD's everytime i see them. And i understand where they come from, their livelyhood is dependent on it...

as for me.. i guess i'm with the rest of you. I steal other peoples MP3's, but if i really like an artist i'll go out and buy their CD. (or at least buy a used copy off Half.com or something)

on a side note... I bought a CD burner couple months ago for $40 bucks... with a $50 rebate :D
Still waitin on the rebate though.

I have no problem with burning cd's or downloading music. If i really like an album, I'll go out and buy it. Incidentally, I remember when I was young, I'd actually tape music from the radio! DJ babbling and all. Also, how many people out there have made mixed tapes before? I know I have, I know a few of my exgirlfriends still have the tapes I've made them. They didn't pay for those songs, so what?

Stop making CD's expensive to pad your own pockets and we'd probably stop trying to find ways to get music cheaper. I mean, this is the same kind of crap the movie industry pulled when VCR's came out. Everyone panicked that people would be taping movies and so forth. Hell we tape stuff from HBO and cable all the time. The thing is, it's legal, cause we're taping it for personal use, not to make money off of it. Why can music be the same way?

i haven't bought a cd since RIAA first sued napster (i actually bought several cd's b/c of napster) and i find it unlikely that i'll ever buy another cd unless RIAA relents or if i'm supporting the artist for political reasons (maybe some famous asian american artist will come out). but then again, i don't burn normal songs anymore. i mostly burn songs mixed by asian dj's around the south who release the songs on their websites.

if the music industry repented their asshole ways and offer a reliable method of downloading a wide range of music, then i would pay to use it. maybe the same w/ movies which i currently get from kazaa.

but if dmca were left in place to stifle free speech and innovation and/or copyright protection were to be placed on future hardware as planned by many tech industry leaders, then screw the entire entertainment industry. i'll be damned if i help them in any way. i'll download every goddamned bit of stuff i ever care to listen to or watch.

Yes, I do have a CD burner, and it's made by lite-on.

Very high quality :P

all lite-on is high quality...that's why cendyne, verbatim and many other companies buy lite-on and slap their name on it.

The fact that the Canadian government is applying outragous "compensation" tax on all blank media gives me the right to make copies, legal or otherwise, does it not?
