my colleague was born in vietnam and lived there when he was a kid. his house used to be behind a restaurant. he said that one time he saw how they prepare a monkey brain to eat.
they put the monkey in a cage. they light up a fire underneath the cage so supposedly all the pressure and blood rushes to the monkey's brain. when they see that the monkey can't take the heat any longer, they chop off its head and serve the brain raw.
yummm...
that's one thing i think i wouldn't eat. monkey brain.

Well I was thinking about trying it until you gave me the pre-slaughtering details....I don't think many of us would eat beef after being constantly exposed to articles about cattle slaughterhouses..

Oh man. That sounds, um utterly not appetizing. But I guess to each their own. I saw a video once, I think it was called the "the many faces of death" where there are a bunch of people seated around a table and in the center of the table theres a hole cut out and a monkey is trapped with his neck in the hole. His body is underneath the table, with only his head esposed. Everyone takes turns beating the monkey on the head with his spoon, then finally someone takes a small hammer and cracks him in the skull killing him. Then they cut open the head and everyone digs in. It was a pretty disturbing video.

Woah...I've never heard of that story before.
Wasn't chilled monkey brain featured as a dish in one of the Indiana Jones movies?

If I ate monkey brains, I'd be a lot smarter by now. You are what you eat.

Yeah, I saw that too. My sister and I thought we were total badasses renting that as kids. Then we cried like babies when we watched it.

has anyone ever heard of ppl eating monkey brains developing dementia later in life? the reason i ask is that cannibals were studied and recently found to develop dementia with the likes of mad cow disease. apparently it was eating the brain that was the cause. mad cow disease is related b/c the cows ate brain of other farm animals.
apparently there is a protein that causes other proteins to "flip" the wrong way and it eats holes in your brain. :gross: hopefully eating monkey brains don't have that protein.

But how can it claim to be a documentary if its fake? I thought documentaries were of facts. But I can be wrong.
But ew. Monkey brains. I can't even eat pork of beef without throwing up. It's not intentional. I think its psychological or something.

heres a good link...the creator of the series admits to faking many of them and actually playing the parts of many of the "death scenes"
"I'll never forget: All of a sudden on the news one night they're talking about Faces of Death!" says John Schwartz, who directed and wrote the movie and its sequels I through IV (there are now eight Faces of Death movies). ...."I almost fell out of my chair," says Schwartz in a phone interview. "Dan Rather on CBS was talking about these "incredibly horrible videos.' 'Cause everybody thought they were real!"....
Then how did Schwartz and company acquire the more bizarre footage? "I was the leader of the flesh-eating cult," Schwart admits. "I had scenes in each of these movies. . . . I'm the crazy, drugged-out killer. . . . I play this freaky rapist in the courtroom scene, and they show the rape on video, and it just so happens that the girl (in the rape scene) was this girl I was dating at the time."
You mean, the famous electric chair scene was fake? But the guy was foaming at the mouth and everything!
"We built a cell in a friend's loft, and we lined the guy's mouth with toothpaste," says Schwartz, laughing. "My research material for that: I happened to pick up a Hustler magazine and there was this great article about electrocution that really detailed how a person is executed. . . . And that's what I used as my basis."

LA Times story (http://www.latimes.com/news/custom/showcase/la-fg-oddeats25feb25.story) on monkey brains and other health remedies in Indonesia
excerpt:
For best results, it is customary to remove the heart from the animal while it is alive.
With little education, many are superstitious, and belief in black magic is widespread.
People everywhere have eating habits that can be hard for others to stomach. The French enjoy frog legs and snails. Australians eat kangaroos. Americans boil lobsters alive. Dogs are popular in much of Asia. Thais eat crickets, Japanese eat sea urchin eggs, and Chinese eat everything from raw scorpions to pickled ants. But in Indonesia, the variety and brutality are noteworthy.
Perhaps most brutal of all is the treatment of the long-tail macaques. Some believe that eating the monkeys' brains can cure impotence. The practice has led to over-hunting, says ProFauna, which has campaigned against the slaughter.
