I received the below message via email. Please vote. I will contact the
Vanity Fair editor to inform her of this thread.

Kasie

************************************************** ***********

Please read on and forward to all Hispanics who are proud of being Hispanic- this column is RIDICULOUS!!

This petition is to request a formal apology from Vanity Fair and Dame Edna for the offensive article regarding Latinos and the Spanish language which appears in the February 2003 issue of Vanity Fair. In the meantime, please boycott Vanity Fair magazine, and urge others to do the same.

If you are offended by the word-for-word transcription below, please copy (rather than forward) this email in a new message, sign it at the end of the list, and send it to all of the people whom you know. If you receive this list with 100 names signed, please send it to the Editor at vfmail@vf.com.

Thank you!

Excerpt, Vanity Fair (February 2003), p. 116, Ask Dame
Edna:

Dear Dame Edna, I would very much like to learn a foreign language, preferably French or Italian, but every time I mention this, people tell me
to learn Spanish instead. They say, "Everyone is going to be speaking Spanish
in 10 years. George W. Bush speaks Spanish." Could this be true? Are we all goig to have to speak Spanish?

Torn Romantic, Palm Beach

Dear Torn:

Forget Spanish. There's nothing in that language worth reading except Don
Quixote, and a quick listen to the CD of Man of La Mancha will take care of
that. There was a poet named Garcia Lorca, but I'd leave him on the intellectual back burner if I were you. As for everyone's speaking it, what
twaddle! Who speaks it that you are really desperate to talk to? The help? Your leaf blower? Study French or German, where there are at least few books worth reading, or, if you're American, try English.

Dame Edna

Dear Editor,

I was infuriated at Dame Edna's response to Torn Romantic,, Palm Beach
(Vanity Fair, February 2003). Dame Edna could have chosen any number of
amusing responses; however, she responded using cheap, two-dimensional
stereotypes of Latinos and Latin Americans, revealing not only her racism but also her profound ignorance of who we are.

We are not just 'the help' and the 'leaf blowers'. We are architects and activists, journalists and doctors, governors and athletes, scientists and
business people. We are Nobel Prize Winners and Rhodes Scholars. We speak Spanish, but we also speak fluent English, and many of us speak other languages as well. As of last week, we are officially the largest minority population in the United States at 37 million and 13% of the population.

Without us, the economy o f this nation and the Americas, and consequently
the world, would come to a complete standstill. If Dame Edna were even remotely cultured or educated, she would have read and lost herself in the exquisite writings of Nobel prize winners Octavio Paz, Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, and Pablo Neruda. She would know that Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz was one of the first feminists and poets in the Americas. She would admire Isabel Allende and Sandra Cisneros for their passionate prose and vibrant spirits. And of course, if it had not been for us the world would not know chocolate! And everyone knows life would not be worth living without chocolate.

Finally, I would like to point out that Dame Edna would have NEVER written such blatantly offensive material about African-Americans or Jews, for obvious reasons. It seems that Dame Edna AND the Editors of Vanity Fair believe that Latinos and Latin Americans cannot read, and even if we could, we would never be Vanity Fair readers. For the life of me, I still cannot figure out why you chose to featre Salma Hayek on the cover and in an article celebrating her success immediately following such an offensive piece. I demand an apology in print in the next issue of Vanity Fair from the Editors and from Dame Edna. In the meantime, I will be mobilizing everyone I know to boycott and protest Vanity Fair. By the way, I am a 31-year old Mexican-American woman, with three Ivy League degrees, working in New York City at a major firm. I sure as hell am NOT the leaf blower or the help, and I think all of you need to go to college.

language is an important part of culture-- and whether we're talking about the asian language, spanish, german, etc... no language is worthless... and no ethnic group should be stereotyped...

i dont read vanity fair.. but i would support the hispanic community for their efforts...

Christ, is this article for real? I'd like to see the original issue. It's hard to believe Vanity Fair would publish something so irresponsible.

Yeah, it's for real.

I say good luck the Hispanic community, but you do realize this is a dude whose entire (and not really all that funny) shtick is about dressing up in drag as a saggy old woman, right? I'm can't even look at Dame Edna without rolling my eyes. There are many creative ways in the Spanish language to tear apart such a person, I'm sure she'll/he'll be hearing about that soon.

Wow! Some people can be really really stupid! I don't think I have ever touched vanity fair, so im not going to buy it anyway, but this reply was really really wrong.

The editors should have given Dame Edna some advice to toss that response.

Vanity Fair knows that it distributes it's glossy pages to many women across the nation. For the editor to let Ms. Edna's response to pass, is... well.... bad to say the least.

here (http://urbanlegends.miningco.com/library/bl-dame-edna.htm)
here is a little more information on the whole situation...

"...That's an accurate description of Humphries' (Dame Edna) stage persona, that of a feisty, fuchsia-haired matron who affects an air of upper-crust sophistication, haughtily deprecating everything and everyone in sight. In fairness, the ultimate target of Humphries' deadpan humor is Dame Edna herself and, by extension, every real-world specimen of her ilk — folks who fancy themselves well-bred and intelligent but who prove by every crass statement that escapes their mouths that they are anything but.

Also, notice at the end that she says "if you're American, try English." I think that shows the humor and non-seriousness of teh whole article.

link doesn't seem to work.

the problem with this is that many readers will not see it as a stereotype. they'll just be seeing it as her making fun of a race instead of making fun of herself. but i'd like to see some more examples of edna's "self-deprecating" humor. if she always says mean and nasty things to everybody in order to make her seem crass, then it might be ok.

here ya go....http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/headline/entertainment/934049

"In a one-woman show that ran more than two and a half hours, the Australian "megastar" insulted the handicapped, deaf people, illegal aliens, the unfortunates trapped in Jones Hall's balcony seats, local celebrities like Mayor Lee Brown and Ninfa Laurenzo, and her audience's dressing habits"

I think that her rep is to be like an aristocratic Chris Rock-type comedian....again, i think the fact that she told Americans to learn English at the end shows that the advice was all a joke...i don't see Americans as a whole getting mad at being told we don't know English.

it does seem this person is pretty equal opportunity AND unserious. taken in this context, i think the humor is understandable.

I've never seen her act, and I don't think I should adjust how I feel about this article simply by her previous acts. This acticle as it stands alone seems to insulting and in poor taste and therefore i'd like to see an apology issued. i don't buy that excuse, 'I make fun of everyone" so it's ok to be insulting.

this is kinda like south park. cartman makes fun of everybody and gets away with it. why? cuz everybody laughs at him (not with him)and recognizes that he's an asshole. if this writer is recognized as an asshole and whatever comes out of her mouth is really making fun of herself, then i think u can overlook it.

but i'd agree that taken by itself, its pretty offensive.

you can't take it out of context because then we couldn't have comedians who's whole routines are based on race jokes.....say bye bye to richard pryor, chris rock, SNL skits and countless others....

If Hispanics can speak fluent English, then why do we need to speak Spanish to them in America? The few times I speak a foreign language in America is to family, certain friends, and people who does not speak english. I'm certainly not going to speak Spanish to a Hispanic-American college graduate or doctor or architect that speaks fluent English... but as for the help and leaf-blower (who talks to the leaf-blower?), I might need to make myself understood.

i don't buy that excuse, 'I make fun of everyone" so it's ok to be insulting

It's not okay, but I do it anyway. I am proud to be an equal-opportunity disparager... mofo (j/k).

Without us, the economy of this nation and the Americas, and consequently
the world, would come to a complete standstill

Not really, it's not like the situation is gonna be when all Hispanics are going to disappear suddenly.

Well, I don't read Vanity Fair, but if someone shows me a hot girl in it, I'm taking his mag away from him.

I still don't really know exactly what type of magazine Vanity Fair is. Is it a magazine primarily for women? If it is, it seems to be one of the few and only female-target magazines with actual men on the covers. Usually women are on the covers of both male and female-targeted magazines (i.e. Maxim and Cosmopolitan).

Vanity Fair Magazine is perhaps the pre-eminent magazine commenting on the American scene today. Vanity Fair focuses on literature, art, fashion, politics and the unusual personality, and is a magazine devoted to readers who are interested in contemporary society and culture. Regular features include photo essays and interviews with leaders in the entertainment industry; book, film, and music reviews, and some of the most compelling political writing available anywhere.

i've never read Vanity Fair myself...
but yeah, i found a little summary of what the magazine is all about...
i just thought i'd share...
