Do you know how to cook? How did you learn? What kind of cuisine can you make? "Your" own or some other kind?

My parents are really great cooks and I remember helping my mother out in the kitchen when I was really young, making dumplings and whatnot. I have baby pictures of me sitting in a high chair - shirtless (why mom why?) and covered in flour with my own little rolling pin. I can make Chinese, some Japanese, most Western, some European foods. I'd like to learn Indian. I'm thinking of signing up for classes at the Culinary Institute in NYC.

on an everyday basis... i dont like cooking... altho i like cooking on special occasions... like holidays... and when i do make a special meal... i like using a cookbooks... and like, when it comes to making something new... i always have to follow the directions EXACTLY how its written in the book...

anyways... cooking can be fun...
i took a korean cooking class in ny once...
and i thought that was interesting...

My favorite, most efficient, and only cooking method has proven successful in the area of culinary preparation all through my years at college:

Push 'Time'
Push in amount of time needed/wanted.
Hit 'Start'.
Finally, you wait (this is the hardest part)

besides microwavology
I also know how to bake cookies
hehe and that's about it

actually I know enough to survive if necessary but I don't consider it cooking unless I can actually make something fairly impressive

the way into a man's pants is to feed him
till he has to unbutton his pants to breathe.
therefore i cook.

I'm a self taught cook, And I also watch a lot of cookery programmes on t.v.

My speciality is probably a chicken and pumpkin stew.

Scary, I had ordered the admission forms to CIA. Still got the video intro to the school they sent me in a closet. I swear I've been cloned and improved. Iris is like the younger, perfected 2nd generation model and I'm the faulty, obsolete prototype.

But onto food. I can make most of your basic Japanese foods. Noodle salads, tenpura, varied types of sushi, okonomiyaki, miso, kimpira sauteed veggies, I don't need the prepared kanpyo I can make it myself, etc. I don't make sukiyaki because it never comes out like my grandmother's so why bother.

Don't do a lot of Western cooking these days but I think my dessert making ability far exceeeds my savory cooking, though I'm familiar with the traditional culinary methods as my Western 'cookbooks' are actually culinary textbook. It's more along the lines of method over specific recipe. My knife skills aren't too shabby and I'm pretty snobby when it comes to cutlery. Henckels Five Star is a standby but I've had my eye on this fabu solid steel Wusthof set.

Chinese Food. Well, I learn from two sources. Mainly I learn from older Chinese moms which I think is better than any book. Nothing fancy, no measuring, just solid food. Off the top of my head without any recipe I can make most breads, prepare seafood, a lot of soups, pai gu, most veggies, dumpling things like jiao zi or guo tie. I think the most complex things I've made are longevity peach dou sa bao and a vegetarian chicken roll made from dou fu pi (tofu skins). The most time consuming is zhong zi. I can make my own tofu and dou jiang pretty easily. I honestly don't go for fancy or complex, my priority is taste and ingredient quality. Whenever possible I try to make it myself to ensure food quality, like making my own jiao zu pi (dumpling skins). I do have some recipe books and prefer the series offered by Wei Chuan. It has Chinese and English for all recipes so if I don't understand the English I can look at the Chinese and if I don't understand the Chinese I can look at the English.

Cooking can be a chore for me since I have to do it all the time, but for the most part I really enjoy it, especially when I have time and tackle a complex dish or master a sauce or technique.

All i cook is steak with A1, pasta wiht alfredo or marinara, rice, chicken with garlic sauce and then i rotate between these meals every meal and i've been doing this since the beginning of the year and it's killing me. Man cannot live on pasta and rice alone! Man need woman cook or else man die because man is never grateful that have something to eat because man is never hungry. Hunger is the best spice. I feel dizzy.

Hmm where to start with me.

I can cook most Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Thai dishes.

I make killer dessert for people.

My specialty is Asian Fusion. I tend to "fuse" a lot of Asian ingrediants to everyday dishes. (Ming Tsai is my mentor on TV

Also do a lot of Neuvo Latin food. :)

i used to love cooking.
then i became forced to do it.
i guess i would love it if it's not a chore.
maybe that's why i love baking much more.
because you don't really need to have
cake and cookies.
i'm more into baking.
oh yes, i bake a mean cheesecake.

has anyone else noticed, that the food you cook
doesn't taste as good compared to the food
someone else makes for you?
even if it's the same recipe?
i think cooking makes me lose my appetite.

I love to cook. I can only cook western food though, the extent of my Thai cooking is rice with hot dogs, or rice and canned sardines in tomato sauce.

Cooking for girls is smooth, you're already at your house only a few scant feet away from the bedroom, you can both get sloshed, since no ones driving she's impressed that you're going through the effort of cooking, you control the atmosphere, you're golden.

make curry si kha.

it's so easy to make, buy the curry paste, check it online here (http://importfood.com/chilipaste_cookingsauces.html),
i recommend the mae ploy and lobo brands, the rest kinda
taste like shit.

curry + coconut milk (Kati) + meat and a dash of nam plaa.
and you're set. that's what alllllll the thai restaurants use in the states.
nobody really makes their own curry paste from scratch, too many ingredients.

Mae Ploy brand is great for green, red curry paste.

and Lobo is great for rice, prik thai gratiem, and panang.

yah man panang is good shit.

or Khao Nah Gai... you know that? Rice Face Chicken?

ngong maak. ma jer e-pip and Tawee karoke-Thai typing, at least i can kao jai :P

Mnfngh. After this weekend . . . . yeah, I can cook again. But I think I enjoy tenderizing meat/chicken/poultry (anything moving when i'm in a bad mood) <_< - stress relief with a meat cleaver. yeah.

And baking. Baking is soothing, and it smells nicer :) From scratch of course! (peeling garlic too, is also soothing, this - i have no idea why . . . )

After watching FoodNetwork, I've always wanted to cook. I remember when I used to watch Julia Child or that one French guy (I can't remember his name) and I would just be amazed. And I remember helping around the kitchen, using the tips I picked up from the TV to correct my mom or whoever. Dumplings were fun to make, too!

But really, the only things I can really do without a cookbook or anything are:
- bread
- scrambled eggs
- spaghetti
- vegetable soup
- burgers
- ham (you know, the ones you see around Christmas or Thanksgiving)

And that's not including:
- canned soup
- ramen
- cup-o-noodles

I'm sure there's more, but I just can't think of anything.
