Two Popular Manhattan Nightclubs Shut Down After Drug Investigation
FEBRUARY 08TH, 2003
Club-goers had fewer options last night after two popular Manhattan nightspots were shut down.
The Manhattan State Supreme Court ordered police to close Club Exit on West 56th Street and the Sound Factory on West 46th Friday night.
Police said the investigation into Exit was based on a history of complaints from the public and arrests inside the club. According to NYPD Inspector Robert Curley, there were more than 170 arrests over the past three years, 50 of which were for sale of controlled substances; the others were for possession.
“It's an indication of the open and flagrant drug use inside the club,” Curley said.
Police said most of the drug activity involved so called "designer drugs" like ecstasy and "Special-K."
Police said at least 11 defendants arrested in the clubs are being prosecuted for illegal drug activity.
