So who would actually wear this stuff in the modern world?
I think I actually would. I dunno maybe I'm crazy but I would like to actually try wearing something to class or just to wherever one day. It's a great way to show off my culture heh.
I found this nice website that has some good items.

don't know if i'd wear everything there, but i would definitely jock the kung fu suit, especially the silk striped.
i've seen some people that wear it every now and then for no particular reason.
i saw a caucasian cat sport one once...hmmmm
what do you think of that?

i was eating with my godfamily at a chinese restaurant on chinese new year's eve - just last week. we saw a caucasian chick sporting a green cheongsam (chinese dress). she had her hair up in two chun-li buns, and had funky make-up. her eyeliner was put on in a way to make her eyes look slanty, and she had bright pink circles of blush on her two cheeks. i didn't know what to make of her. my godfather freaked out initially b/c he said that she looked like one of those servants - dummies - that chinese people burn to the dead. he said she was bad luck and told us not to look at her. my godbrother asked me if i thought her outfit was offensive. i said i didn't know. what do you all think?

it's not as offensive as it is tasteless.

i don't know, some of the clothes for the guys might not be popular among the younger consumers. they look like something older men might wear (grandfather's generation).

yeah...the guys' stuff seems unpractical (well, i'm socialized now to see that... ;) ); but the female ones...i could/have seen clubbers to movie stars rock that stuff...hmmm..maybe back to the theory our females are considerred 'exotic' and the mainstream girls want that 'look?"

Some old women in Japan still wear kimonos. I think the only time I'd ever wear one is at a Japanese cultural festival like obon, or sometime during my wedding.

Funny story. I suppose it depends on her intent -- if she wanted to honor the culture (albeit in a strange way), or ridicule it. The overall effect for me is something in the middle, more of a trivialization. But then again, if we're talking about wearing this stuff for kicks, would we be doing the same thing?

I actually wear the Thai silk sarongs here in AZ, cuz' its so hot during the summer, and I know last year it became a fashion trend in Bangkok cuz' one of the drama series was set in the Ayutthaya period (think about 1800's) - so all the teenagers were wearing it.
I have a cheongsam that i've been forced to wear on various occasions like weddings and stuff.
Yeah - i agree, the guys stuff is kinda errr, umm . . "interesting" to wear on an everyday basis.

Yeah, I got a couple pakamas, too, but I don't wear 'em. In Thailand, I could, but not in the US.

I'd only wear a saya for special Filipino parties. Although I DO love the "Muslim princess" look. I remember heding to a pool hall one night after a party wearing that costume and everyone was just looking at me funny.

I dunno man. I know the politically correct answer would be to look at her as if she were trying to participate in another culture but I would have just laughed my ass off or alerted some of my Asian guy friends to the possible easy booty.
I have worn and do own a chi pao (or cheong sam if you know only the canto name) but it was specifically for my wedding banquet and I certainly haven't worn it since. I also have some other stuff given to me as gifts and it's actually pretty high quality but I wouldn't wear it out just for the hell of it. I don't want to look tu, sanba or like an idiotic wannabe-Asian foreigner.
Although, now that I think about it I do own and have worn yukata quite a few times for festivals like Tanabata or Obon. I don't now that I'm married (read: Chinese Imperialism and uber-perversion) but I have worn the full yukata get up with all the liners and layers and might still remember how to dress another female in it.
Yeah, I'm back and jetlagged all to hell.

Was she cute? What i mean is, without the funky makeup did she look like she would be an attractive girl? The bad luck thing is classic!

That movie was funny. Jet Li saying "YOU ARE ALL MY BITCHES" towards the end. Horrible, but funny.
As for rocking the old school asian clothing, it's become such a trival thing here in the states. other races wear it cuz it looks "cute" and foreign/exotic.
I've seen skater guys wear the old chinese jackets and stuff. Hell, I've even seen a black guy with dreads wearing a PRC army jacket. I was like WTF? After a while, I just don't care anymore. I'd be a bit peeved, but then again, most of the ppl who wear shit like that don't have cultural clothes to begin with. Aside from all the mass market stuff, what can they call their own? =/
And after-all, clothes are just clothes. They're meant to be on people. It doesn't really belong to one race. It can come from one, but others can wear it.
So if I see a cute white chick wearing a cheongsam, and it flatters her body, I can't see nothing wrong with that. :D

I manage to get a piece of Chinese clothing in at least once or twice a week. If it's not the clothese, I wear some piece of Chinese jewerly. But then again I have not problem sporting some African wear also.
As far as people wearing something ethnic other than their own is cool with me. I'm still trying to get use to one of my brothers with dreds.

Man, those are way OLD SCHOOL, yo!
The thing with traditional Chinese clothing is that there are really none fixed.
Every dynasty has it own dress/robes/clothes, and they all look different.
For example, the Tang and Han dynasty robes are very baggy, but the Qing and Yuan dynasty clothes are very tight to the body (due to both dynasties being ruled by nomadic people who needs tight clothing to move freely on a horse).

What's the deal where in some "Chinese weddings", the wife changes her Chinese dresses a bunch of times?
I don't mind non-asians wearing chinese dresses. I think those dresses are beautiful and can really flatter any women. How ever, chun-li buns and the make-up is over kill. When I've seen white women wear asian dresses, they generally have normal make-up and hair either in a bun ot some how made to be tight against their head. Usually looks good.
As for the mens clothes, meh. They look cool but I'd always second guess myself if I picked one out to wear for a day.
Those ancient traditional chinese outfits are amazing.
