Jishinbalbki - Stepping on the Spirits of the Earth
Saturday, February 8th We invite you to show your support and share in the rhythms at Koryo Plaza in Oakland (Telegraph and 44th St.) at 6 pm
Be there for short performances, refreshments, food, and play- followed by a madangbalbi, kosa and dwipuri at KYCC.
Background on Jishinbalbki: Jishinbalbki is normally practiced in Korea and in the Korean American community to gather good wishes for the New Year. Jishinbalbki is normally performed between the first 15 days (before the first full moon) of the Lunar New Year. Literally, "stepping on the spirits of the earth," the purpose of the players dancing in rhythm is to step on, block, and temper the wayward, vengeful or "bad" tendencies of a spirit and to encourage the good. Since 1988, KYCC has performed Jishinbalbki in Bay Area "Koreatowns" in order to 1) to personally recognize Korean merchants who have been struggling to make a space and wish them a prosperous coming year 2) increase the visibility of the Korean community and its culture and 3) to nurture communal awareness, participation and interaction not only between like-minded Korean groups and organizations but across dividing lines such as generation, political sensibility, profession and class.
