These movies which i've seen are by my judgement. You guys might have a different viewpoints, so share any comments.
* The fast and the furious *
[u:c0de6f0f51]Pro[/u:c0de6f0f51] - Introduces the Import scene into the US media. Put an asian family in a huge, rich house setting.
[u:c0de6f0f51]Con[/u:c0de6f0f51] - Has 1 major asian character who is rick yune and other asian side actors..., Gave those two asians Rick Yune and the other one who was playing his cousin vietnamese last names , embarass asians by having a scene where the FBI busting into the house of the asian family having lunch and a swat officer putting a gun into the little asian girl's face and finally....putting those asians on motorbikes at the end. WTF?
* Bloodsport *
[u:c0de6f0f51]Pro [/u:c0de6f0f51]- Asian martial arts film.
[u:c0de6f0f51]Con[/u:c0de6f0f51] - Had either asians fighting each other or fighting whites and the white getting their ass kicked by them , making asians looking like villians or hardcore fighters.
* I am Sam *
[u:c0de6f0f51]Pro[/u:c0de6f0f51] - Nice movie, no asians except one asian female
[u:c0de6f0f51]Con[/u:c0de6f0f51] - One asian female who played as a hooker...sheesh, enough already with the asian female stereotype out there. My gf got pissed when she saw that scene.
* Blade II *
[u:c0de6f0f51]Pro[/u:c0de6f0f51] - n/a
[u:c0de6f0f51]Con[/u:c0de6f0f51] - What is with Wesley Snipes fighting asian girls all the time? The scene with the asian female and the hispanic bodyguard in the hallway one.
* The Art of war *
[u:c0de6f0f51]Pro[/u:c0de6f0f51] - Setting in Hong Kong
[u:c0de6f0f51]Con[/u:c0de6f0f51] - Had one asian teen girl giving head to a chinese general....and again, a chinese lady fighting wesley snipes and getting killed. Damn, what about the strip club scene? that was not necessary.
* Romeo must die *
[u:c0de6f0f51]Pro[/u:c0de6f0f51] - Had jet li and Russell Wong
[u:c0de6f0f51]Con[/u:c0de6f0f51] - Beginning scene with two asian lesbians...sheesh. My gf was also pissed about this.
* Rush Hour II *
[u:c0de6f0f51]Pro[/u:c0de6f0f51] - Takes place in Hong Kong, instead of the US
[u:c0de6f0f51]Con[/u:c0de6f0f51] - Chris rock talk about eating dog to Jackie chan, the part with the asian girls behind the wall scene....my gf was really pissed off about that scene. She made me throw away the dvd for that reason.
Any others out there?

Pearl Harbor and other Vietnam War movies depicting Asians as evil villains and whites as patriotic heroes. Joy Luck Club, thanks Amy Tan now we know who to blame for Asian woman running away from cheating Asian husbands or cheapskate Asian husbands who are totally inconsiderate and slimy but somehow enjoy American icecream. Breakfast At Tiffany's, thanks Mickey Rooney, it took you bucktoothed and slanted eyes to show us how annoying and weird sounding asians are. Big Trouble Little China, all Chineses are evil and know kungfu. Rising Sun, Japanese gangsters kill white women and need to be stopped by whites. Kung Fu the series, prefers a ugly white Carradine to play the role of a Chinese man when Bruce Lee should've had the part. All James Bond movies, depicts Asians as villains to be stopped by the British secret agent. Karate Kid, italian kid beats everyone with help of strange English speaking Miyagi (Pat Morita). Sixteen Candles, long duk is a nerd with glasses. Revenge of the Nerds, omission of Asians in positive roles but included as negative nerd. Just name any Hollywood movie and I'm sure I can pick out an Asian in a bad role.

i'm guessing that you have never read the book. in the book, the "cheapskate husband" is not slimy (like in the movie) but rather very handsome. also, the problem wasn't so much that he was cheap but rather that he was passion-less. don't forget, in the book, she ends up with a much more caring, passionate, and good-looking CHINESE guy. by the way, waverly's husband--a WHITE guy--was described as an unattractive, freckled-face redhead in the book.
and yes, the book also depicted asian men in china in the 30's cheating or having more than one wife. this wasn't something that she just made up. it was a reality for many asian women during that time AND those women had to suffer through it. why is it so wrong for her to write about that reality in her book? especially if it is relevant to the hardships that the mothers faced and, in turn, the way that they dealt with their daughters? remember, that is what the book was focused on--the relationship that asian-american women had with their mothers. i think tan did a damn good job.
i was skeptical about the movie initially as well. but that scene with waverly and her mother at the hair salon did it for me--the tears came pouring.
it really irks me when people just jump on the bandwagon to criticize amy tan without even reading her book or understanding the sentiment behind the story.

yes the book was definitely much better.
i've also read The Hundred Secret Senses and Kitchen God's Wife. at this point though, i'd have to say that in comparison to some other asian or asian american literature, amy tan really caters to the caucasian reader, or perhaps just the general american public, instead of asian american readers. it seems to me that she exoticizes asian cultures to appeal to those who don't live in it. all that mysticism stuff in it is like... it's from some fantasy world or something. and the gap that she always sets between second generation asian americans and their first generation immigrant parents is just immensely huge. i find that the way she writes the first generation immigrant parents can be kind of unrealistic sometimes.

don't forget that they were in hawaii and there was not one hawaiian or asian in sight, even though white people are actually the minority in hawaii.

Breakfast at Tiffany's would be an otherwise cute film if not for the ridiculous and stupid portrayal of an Asian neighbor by Mickey Rooney in yellow-face.

>> i watched joy luck club 3 times :D...i thought it was the coolest movies because it was all about people like me...asians who suffered with the same nagging moms and felt the same sort of inadequecies. i read the kitchen god's wife and joy luck club...both werent bad books...although my aunt told me that tan originally grew up in america and didnt really live through or experience everything she writes about *shrug* if this is true it certainly means she's done her research.
>> has anyone seen that commercial for mr.chau's chinese fast food? haha...the name in itself sounds degrading lol...but anyways...the song goes "chow down at mr. chau's!!", and theres a lil character which im assuming is meant to be mr.chau whose a short little asian guy whose voice sounds like a cross between alvin the chipmunk and ms. swan. how awful =/

they were on a military base, though. most of those guys wouldn't be from hawaii.

Yeah, she did grow up in America. Hey, you should really read One Hundred Secret Senses (Or was it A Hundred Secret Senses?). I really like that one.
