i can't decide. i totally am in love with the powerbook G4 titanium 17".
but i'm like a pc user. i dunno how practical that will be.

i honestly can say that i like stuff cuz it's pretty. and oh boy. the powerbook is fucking hot.

but i also admit that i'm really dumb about computers. i'm one of those chicks that get the most expensive one cuz it's pretty and expensive = good. i don't really use the computer much? i mean. mainly for internet and word and email. that's about it.

but i want a /pretty/ one. i don't want the ibook. i dunno. i rather have the powerbook. i want a light one too.

my budget is at US$4000.
less would be better.

before this i owned 2 toshibas and 2 vaios...

what do you guys recommend?

Hi, new poster here who did a lot of websurfing for a PC notebook recently.

If you like cool-looking notebooks, you might want to check out (www.dynamism.com).
They're a company that imports Japanese market-specific notebooks to the U.S., although there probably is a mark-up.

Specific models that seemed pretty cool were:

Panasonic R1 (or T1): http://www.panasonic.com/computer/notebook...html/01a_r1.htm (http://www.panasonic.com/computer/notebook/html/01a_r1.htm)
(The above model is also offered at Dynamism's website.)
Sharp UM Series: http://www.sharpsystems.com/tmplUM.asp
Fujitsu S Series, B series, or P2000

Hope that's helpful.

How much is the G4? I thought it was in the 5K range...

You can get a new 15-inch G4 PB for around 2k.

Hanuman

Yeah the 17 inch is like $3500, which is a steal, but the 15 inch is pretty sweet too and so much cheaper. I'm poor so I got the 14 inch iBook and I love it. I'm on it right now.

If you do want the absolute best go for the Alienware monsters
they aren't light though but they will do just about everything and then some
the one I'm putting together is about ohhhh $5G

errr HP seems pretty nice right now (ludicrous advertising on my part since i have ties to Compaq :P ) also if you're not going to have too much to do with it then this is the choice
Dell is a no-no on my book
Toshiba is still way up there
Viaos... well good stuff but put together by monkeys, use at your own risk
Apples are nice but ask yourself if you really wanna change your OS, they are also very much media-centric great for video music and whatnot and on par with the other things
might consider getting one myself hehe

alienware is gearing toward gamer desktop replacements tho. honestly pip, if you just need something for on the go, dell or hp is fine. and cheaper. although i hate dell, and i'm guessing BL does too, their laptops are actually very reliable and their service is very good...BUT ONLY FOR LAPTOPS...they skullfuck the rest of their customers (the desktop division).

i also wouldn't touch alienware because although i want a laptop, if i want a gaming pc, a laptop will never cut it. and yeah, BL i have messed with the new alienware lappy.

i hate to start a new thread for pretty much the same question.
my price range is a lot lower than hers, though. about 1200 at the most. i'd use it for art, music, and internet. i want it to look good, too, any suggestions?

look good versus perform well, are two different things. for the price, i'd suggest checking out hp. their prices look REALLY reasonable.

To be honest, all those brands are pretty much the same inside.

However, make sure you have some quality motherboard, I would say Intel, so you can make lot's of upgrades.

And for optical drives, I recommand Lite-on-CDRW/DVD. :D

o_O? you know laptops are pretty much NON-upgradeable, right?

and if you meant desktops, than why intel? for every flavor of expensive intel, there's an inexpensive or equally expensive flavor of amd. both are equally upgradeable.

amd's are good...in terms of manufacturers..dont buy a compaq...they have horrible customer service and their shit breaks all the damn time....same with HP since they are owned by teh same company....i say sony's, gateways, or dell's are dependable...try to get one without alot of software packages because most of it is junk that just clogs up your ram and diskspace....

pipSy,

If you are not in a hurry and if you can wait, I'd wait until the new Intel Centrino platforms comes out in about a month. These are going to be thin and light systems that have extended battery life, excellent performance, and integrated wireless capabilities. Most of the major companies like HP, Dell, IBM all will have some stylin' systems out on the market in a month or two. You can run your PC apps, fast, and look good. Not a bad deal, eh?

Of couse, there is no way to beat the Apple G4 17" -- but if you are after PC software and serious performance, I'd go with the new laptops that are coming out. Also, it depends on what you want to use it for, I love my little iBook which does everything I need, looks cute, and fits in a backpack. I also don't have to worry about scratching or denting the surface... just white plastic. Better yet, I don't have to even buy software for it. Just load the X11 and OpenOffice and voila, instant business system... all for $999.

My suggestions, wait two months. Check out the Centrino systems, then make a decision on PC or Apple. good luck on your purchase decision.

himura-dono
02-23-2003, 07:24 PM
wow, HH wasn't kidding, intel fanboy ^_^

as for the centrino, i dunno, intel's been down this road before with other similar ideas...except it didn't go anywhere. i like the idea behind centrino, but i don't see it as much more than replacing pda processors or maybe trying to compete against the crusoe processor items. in any case, i think that the centrino will more than likely wind up in the pricier more elitist pda's or sub par mini laptops.

Word. Tom lost his credibility around 2000, with the whole P4 debacle, well that and the infamous "amd chip on fire" video.

IF YOU DON'T PUT A HEATSINK OR FAN ON A CHIP, WTF DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN?!

i'm an amd user, so if you're referring to that...i managed to get my 2100+ tbred b's that i got recently up to 2.4+/-ghz stable (it's about the estimated tbred equivalent of 3000+ pr rating. the reason i say tbred equivalent is because the barton is the actual 3000+ chip, and it runs at 2.2ghz. due to more cache and a few core tweaks, the barton runs at a higher rating then the tbred b.). this is a dual configuration tho, but i've seen the same chips in single hit 2.5 if they're lucky or throwin lots of volts at em.

oh yeah, stock on the 2100+ is 1.73ghz. so the total oc is about 670mhz.

anyone know if its possible to replace a notebook's graphics chip? my friend got a notebook recently and has a radeon mobility 7500. he wants to get a 9000, but none of us know if its even possible to switch out the chips.

himura-dono
02-25-2003, 06:24 PM
from what i know it's impossible. oh yeah, your friend got the hp laptop. the reason it costs so much more for video upgrade at some laptop places like hp and dell is because they have to use a different laptop motherboard with that graphics chipset. so, your friend is stuck with that mobility 7500 (which isn't too bad, pretty good as long as you have enough memory).

hope that helps. well, in understanding that he can't i mean...

I just chunked my Toshiba 3005-S304 from the two story window down to the concrete tonight
after crashing and losing all my files for the umpteenth time.
Im on my even older Toshiba 335CDT.

I had a 5 year warranty on it. but Fry's Electronics is such a dick about their Performance Guarantees.
They accuse you. Lie to you. Give you so much bullshit then charge you to "look" at it.
I told them to fuck off and I actively go to Fry's at least once a month to get kicked while i tell everyone in the computer section not to buy anything there.

Oh yeah. Fuck Fry's Electronics.

Funny. the newer toshiba has given me over 12 harddrive crashes. all though the one tonight is the FINAL one
Fried 3 laptop harddrives. Turns off every few hours by itself. Eats my DVD.

The Old one is still pumping after close to 5 or 6 years.

Looks like Im gonna get a new laptop now and i want a pretty one too. haha

I swear thought it seems that there is not one good computer manufacturer left.

Compaq = Shit.

HP = Shit

Dell = Customer Service and Delivery shit

Toshiba = I used to like them after my 335CDT but I despise them after the hellspawn that is my s304

I guess they just dont build computers like they used to.

Kind of like cars.
My 02 Honda Accord is a piece of shit too.

it appears that the people who make alienware computers are Clevo a company in taiwan
and they also sell the same exact model to Sager and Voo DOo
and Sagers models are significantly cheaper with the same options.

The only difference is.
