Do they calculate your brilliance

Nope. It's just another quantifiable way of measuring performance, but it's not generalizable I believe.

Everything I was tested on for the SAT's I pretty much learned elsewhere. And taking SAT classes raised my scores... so studying matters, I don't think it's like an IQ test or something.

Standardized testing sucks, especially the MCAS. Don't stress over it.

doing good on the sats or any type of standardized test proves one thing. that you are good at taking tests.

i took my sats THREE F'IN TIMES. the first and last times i got the same exact scores with the same exact break down bt math and language. what a waste. i did alright the first time shoulda just called it a day

anyway more and more schools nowadays are trying to steer away from simply basing acceptance on sats (my alma mater rutgers did this, lazy a$$es) but its still got a long way coming til they are totally null and void, so in short, grin and bear it.

well, anyone in the uc system is already sighing in relief that they're not in high school now that a new test is coming about to replace/supplement SAT

i sucked a fat one and froze up for like 10 minutes during the test, i only got a 1360 *hangs head in shame* perfect verbal, but x_X sucky math.....

in general, people who ardently believe the test is an accurate measure of intelligence are the ones who scored high. people who whine that it's bullshit and all based on memorization are the ones who scored low. everyone wants to give their ego a boost or some protection.

ive scored 1350 on psats and 1300 on sats, i dont consider that HIGH, nor do i consider that low, and i still think that the sats suck

i dont think people are really trying to protect their egos, but for those of us that have moved beyond sats and even college, in retrospect, the sats didnt mean ish.

yeah, I fell asleep in the middle of my SATs. I zoned out because I could care less about it. My school's not THAT prestigious, but it's good enough for me (although the tuition's friggin over 20 grand/year), but scholarships make up for it.

Nah, it's not the sole indicator of how intelligent a person is. I got a 1470 (770 math and 700 verbal). If anything it's more test savvy. Prolly also the fact that my mom and pops made me read the dictionary and pounded mathematics into my head as a kid.

I mean I borrowed my friend's Princeton Review notes cuz my folks couldn't afford to send me to one of them prep courses. The bulk of it was identifying and eliminating the blatantly wrong answers to narrow down your choices, how to make an educated guess etc etc etc. Basically the same thing when I borrowed my friend's notes and books from Kaplan when I was studying for my MCAT.

Two of my friends who scored in the low 1200's on their SAT's. One ended up going to Yale for law school and the other went to Stanford for his MBA. Neither of them did ultra spectacular on their LSAT or GRE's, either. They just get nervous and choke when they take standarized exams.

And no their parents didn't buy their way in, they were borderline ghetto poor back in the day like my folks when we were applying to colleges and grad schools.

i would say, no. partly because i did a horrible job on mine and also because everyone has different types of intelligence. some of them do well on standardized exams and others don't.

I'm taking it this december 7 and I never dreamed I had to take it. See, I'm applying for a scholarship (I don't live in the USA) and SAT 1 is a requirement. This decusion just came up a few weeks ago and I'm studying really hard for it.

The SATs measure one thing: how much money you can pay -

1. To take a seven hundred dollar prep course
2. To take the test over and over and over as the fee goes up and up.

I was really lucky: my high school offered a free prep course. I got a 1410 the first time and didn't take it again.

I got a 1460, 760 Math and 700 Verbal (and like doc bunboy, this was before the recentering, so our scores would be higher now). All this means is I spent too much time reading books and spent too much time with the Math Team/Club in high school (I can't believe I just admitted I was on the Math Team in high school).

I didn't study at all...took one practice test to familiarize myself with the questions.

The test does not measure intelligence, but it measures knowledge, to some extent. You can learn the test. If you do well on the test, it means that you know the material that the testers are looking for.

The LSAT is the same way. I used to teach it for Princeton Review. It is a learnable test. It is supposed to measure, to some extent, the ability to think logically and reason out arguments. That's plausable, but they want to see if you can do it in a certain way, which is learnable.

I studied for the LSAT as much as I studied for the SAT. My score was still consistent with my SAT percentile score. This means nothing except that I'm good at taking these tests and that I have the kind of knowledge that they're looking for. It doesn't measure intelligence.

The MCAT, on the other hand...man, props to the people who can kick that tests ass. I used to joke with my students..."Whenever you get frustrated or think you have it bad, just be happy that you're not one of the people down the hall in the MCAT class." Kudos to you doc bunboy.

As for these tests being "predictors" of performance in school. I personally can attest to the falsity of that notion, at least in regard to the SAT.

If the testers just justified the test as a standardized measure of people entering a certain type of school nationwide so it makes it easier for them not to consider other factors, I could live with it. It'd be unfair, but I don't see any other objective way to measure applicants against each other.

Haha whatever, it's all means to an end. Law, medicine, MBA we're all in the same boat.
Oh yeah the infamous change in the SAT's haha. Damn we're ancient, man 8(.

I honestly do believe that it's the fact that my parents was priming me for the SAT's since I was in first grade lol. :D

Like Chasiubao_Boy said, "its not the sole indicator of how intelligent a person is." I score 660 on verbal and 650 on Math. It's not tooooo low or tooooooo high. Its about average. I also took the ACT. Got a 32 out of a 36( I believe thats the highest). So my performance on the ACT was a lot better.
Got into USC-------GO TROJANs........It wasn't too hard to get in (3.6 H.S. GPA), just darned expensive. Thank god for the ROTC scholarship...They paid for everything!!! I was debt free..............but not anymore.

Now I'm in Med school.... although I took 8 years off to find my true self.
So you can be sucessful, even if you score average on the SAT.
Looking back, I would have to say the SAT was the bane of my existence.. I wasted so much money attending those prep seminar, just to walk away 1310. My advice is dont waste money on those Prep seminar. Just use the Princ. Rev, and you;ll be find.

SAT's don't measure intelligence at all, just as anything with luck involved doesn't.

Anything that is multiple choice has a certain degree of luck involved.

Once you are in college SAT won't matter anymore. So people who are waiting to take it, don't worry too much about it, Just do your best and good luck.

i started this because i was talking to wylin the other day about how much i really hate how my future depends on a few stupid numbers.

do SATs really measure much?

in my opinion, all standardized tests are, for lack of better words, stupid. they don't really measure what they intend to measure.

my last SAT test was a horrible score because the last 4 sections, i had to pee so badly that i was distracted from making logical choices (although i bet if i didn't have to pee, i probably wouldn't have improved much). so if i don't take a few more SATs, i won't be able to get into a UC since i had to pee.

see?! i don't think i'm getting my point across. but yah...

also, i think SATs really measure how rich you are (my psych teacher was talking to us about it). the majority of the kids with higher scores are the kids who could afford to pay for SAT classes, SAT prep books, and who could also pay to take the SATs again and again.

what do YOU think? are standardized tests legit?
