Goddamn Celine Dion can sing. The Dixie Chicks sounded pretty good too.
My vote for best rendition of the national anthem (for a Super Bowl, anyway): Whitney Houston in '92, easily.

Dion looked like she was synching, Dixie Chicks were questionable. Felt kinda odd having a French-Canadian at a quintessentially American sporting event.

Re: Whitney -- did the patriotism fever help?
I'm pretty sure it was her. The usually lip synch folks who need to be running around the stage who have to catch their breath and so on. Besides, I'm pretty sure her voice showed up.
They may be French-Canadian, but come on, they're called the Dixie Chicks! Besides, last year's Super Bowl halftime show (the best ever IMHO) featured four lads from Dublin...
I think the patriotism helped. It was pretty moving to see the entire stadium filled with yellow. But despite that, Whitney's singing performance was just electric.

But back to the game...Tampa Bay, 20 - 3.
RAYYYYYDAZ!! hahah...that offensive line better start getting their signals right or the game's over.

Okay, now you wanna see a lip synch job, check out Shania...the tone of her voice stays (effortlessly) the same, regardless of whether she's clapping, slightly bouncin' up and down, whatever.
Whereas No Doubt is keepin' it real. I'm sure Sting will too.

Raiders Fans:
THE BUCS FUCKED YOU UP!!!

It's ridiculous...it's not like the Bucs are even throwing complex blitz packages at Gannon (most of which he can smell anyway). Their front four is just beating the crap outta the Raiders' vaunted o-line.
MellowDrama
01-26-2003, 06:27 PM
At least the Raiders are trying to make a game of it, but it seems to be too little, too late, because they're dropping points with failed 2 pt. conversions.

Another TD:) An entire quarter to play...

The Raiders D needs to put more pressure on Johnson, but christ...if you're gonna do a corner or strong safety blitz, cover the fucking flat!! Keyshawn was wide open...

It's starting to get interesting:)
34 - 21.

Yes, getting interesting, but they still keep on failing on the 2 pt conversions, though that last one was questionable.

The Bucs wanted the championship bad.
It sure seemed like it. After so many years of failing in the playoffs, maybe the Silver and Black just got too caught in being here.
Just lose, baby!

I saw the Bowl at work today.
At 8 am.
With uggh Troy Aikman commentating. I was a little irked that they made the English announcers explain various rules, because I would presume that anyone watching it in English already knows the rules, but that was okay. However Troy Aikman's gems of commentating made it all the worse.
"Now, intentional grounding is when the QB grounds the ball intentionally."
"Pass interference is when the safety prevents the reciever from catching a pass, but illegaly."
"This is what we call a touch-back. It is different from a touch down because the ball is downed in your own end-zone, but is not a safety."
Anyone who did not know how football worked would have become stupider having listened to these explanations.
The last thing that irked me was that there were no commercials. Who wants to sit around watching players sip gatoraide and scratch their butts?

Now, I don't think I'm being particularly biased at all here when I say this, since I am a diehard Cowboys fan, but...you don't know crap, damnit!!
Commentating always changes for the Super Bowl because of the audience. It's precisely because of the largely football-ignorant contingent that football has to be explained so much. I mean, let's face it, it's the most complex sport out there. 11 on 11 with an endless array of formations and rules. I remember a high school teacher once told me she liked listening to Madden commentate because he spoke plainly.
For regular season games, Troy's actually one of the best color commentators in the NFL right now. He's like the complete opposite of Dennis Miller: he knows the friggen game inside out but rarely (and I mean rarely) jokes about anything.
I can do without most commentary anyway, but I usually prefer to hear from former QB's, because they usually know both sides of the ball better than anyone.

I have not heard troy commentating for an american audience.
And his explanations of the rules were horrible! That's all I was saying.

How does the channel make money? I understand in soccer the revenue is made from the event itself but the Superbowl... ? Is that some kind of way of making the game more familiar to an Asian audience by presenting it like soccer?

Okay. I can agree with that. He was the only high profile Cowboy of his era that never had a sexual assault or rape charge put up against him, and he didn't use drugs when the rest of his teammates did. He was also a great QB. I can remember that year when he and the boys snapped the Skins undefeated season. (1991, the year they last won the bowl.) It broke my heart. I hated him so much! But I sure respected him for his ability.

Its cable satelite. Thats how.
You have to pay like $30/month just to have the channel.
