View Full Version : what makes a guy an asiaphile?
kasia

cause presumably not every single non-asian guy who is interested in an asian girl is an asiaphile. so how would you define it? and is asiaphilia acceptable? would you date an asiaphile?

i wouldnt date an asiaphile. i think of them as guys who arent really interested in the girl herself because of her personality, but more because of the fact that shes asian. they have all these assumptions of her being exotic and so forth. theyre more obsessed with her looks and a lot of times sexuality than who she is as a person.

well, the other thread that you saw was actually an old thread, and one of the new members responded to it. that is allowed, ya know. that's why we keep our old threads.
this new thread re: asiaphiles differs from the last because, in the last one, we were ranting about asiaphiles whereas in this one, i am asking what would make one an asiaphile. e.g., would it be sufficient if he hangs out on an asian site, has an asian gf OR would there need to be more? plus, we have a lot of new female members who didn't participate in the old thread.

It would have been hard for me to date any guy without a little bit of a race issue coming up because I don't have a race like myself to date... but I have turned dates down in the past because the guy was just too into Japanese culture and looked at me like I was another part of that culture he wanted to be part of so badly. I've also been really turned off by Japanese guys who were interested in me just because I represented the cool American culture they wanted to be part of.
But I broke up with one guy that I wouldn't have remotely thought of as an asiaphile (at first) that said when we broke up "Where am I going to find another part-Japanese girlfriend?"
I don't get what you think is wrong with kasie's question. If you're a girl and even remotely Asian in America you have to deal with this type of thing.

You're not the only guy with an Asian girlfriend, likes Asian stuff and hangs out on AA sites. We're AA women chatting with each other. We're on an AA site. It may happen to other ethnicities, but we're talking about what we have to deal with.
We're also talking about stuff like tampons, so don't read so much into it.

But to answer the original question and get this back on topic...
I've known some guys that were just extremely well versed in an Asian culture and language that for all intents and purposes were culturally Asian that weren't Asiaphiles. On the other hand, I've known a couple that were. I really think it's a choice they make to be an Asiaphile, like certain ones just feel like they have to conquer something or own something as if they have this colonial mentality.
There seems to be certain degrees of Asiaphilia. There are scary ones, harmless but annoying ones, short term ones, long term ones. I think the scary ones come in the form of 'I MUST HAVE AN ASIAN WOMAN!' and/or the pervy old white guys that are your boss that seem to have thoughts of Asian Mistress brewing in their little weasel brains.

Hi, how's everybody? Interesting topic. Just passing by. Almost to 1000. Bye.
And people think I'm a post whore? Look at hookers in front of you, people!
That Newsweek article was crap. The whole piece was basically "Some women in New York City" have Asian boyfriends. Since NYC is the style capital of the nation, it must be a trend that we've got the scoop on! It really didn't point to any kind of sociological data at all to establish factual proof of a trend. It just recounted random stories about Asian men having non-Asian girlfriends in the Village.
I think an Asiaphile is a person who has no logical reason for liking Asian women other than the fact that they're Asian and fit a certain type of stereotype or lifestyle-conceit they're seeking to experience. For example, it's like the white Asian history professor who only dates Asian women. There are plenty of other non-Asian women who also love to study Asian culture, but he can't be bothered with them. Or take a classmate of mine who started only going out with women from mainland China after reading about Chinese history in high school. The Asiaphile doesn't have a non-racial preference in women that these Asian women happen to fulfill. Instead, he goes for women out of a desire to experience their, for lack of a better word, Asian-ness.

I college I met this one dude who was pretty shy around girls. He also dated only asian women. I think for him the stereotype of an asian women being more docile, more subservient, more accomadating, fed his ego and made him less insecure.
We talked about this once, about how he only dated asian women, and I got the feeling that it gave him a feeling of empowerment. I also got the impression that he has a small dick. Why else all the insecurity. Small little asian girl not complain about small dickie, will still love you long time. He disgusted me.

I read an article where Lucy Liu has stated that if a guy has already been out with another asian girl before then she won't date him.
This might be changing the subject slightly but I've been out with both Asian and Caucasian women and I've always treated the Asian women better than the Caucasians, Is this bad of me?

ok, before you continue to speak out of your ass, let me help you with some info.
professors need to do research in order to become professors.
if this research is culturally specific (i.e. chinese history), then that person needs to go to that area and go through archives. while there, they tend to meet other researchers, or hell, god forbid they date. or even marry during their research there.
out of 6 chinese historical researchers i've known 5 were married to asians. not specifically all chinese, but they met while IN china. the one that wasn't got married before he got to grad school to go do his research. his wife is caucasian.
now if you spend several years in another country, are you supposed to just act completely immune to the world around you? these people didn't think, "oh shit, gotta get me some asian pussy. i think i'll go do research in korea, japan, vietnam, thailand or china"

Well let me blow some more flatulence in your face by explaining myself.
I'm not saying all professors are like that. I just met a couple who were really abnormal about their relationships. I've seen them interact with people and explain their relationships and their motivations . They're not loving those women because of themselves. They're going out with these womemn because they're Asian and it's part of their image. It was an individual example that came to mind.
Dude, I know you probably get a lot of shit for your own relationship, but don't go around assuming I'm an equal jerk too. Thanks for your magnanimous attempt to educate me though.

I think it was October '02. No, I don't just happen to know this; someone left a copy of the November '02 issue in the bathroom, so I was reading it, there was a letter from some white guy complaining about the fact that Lucy Liu dislikes asiaphiles. the usual "some guys like blondes, some guys like Asians" logic.
personally i'd say lucy liu's principle is pretty solid, if a guy is meeting and dating girls at random with regards to race, the chance that he just happens to go out with an asian girl and happens to start hitting on another asian girl later isn't quite so high.

Yeah. Your point?
I'm not saying that it's unique to Asiaphiles. I'm just recounting what I've experienced. There's nothing wrong with interracial romances if the two adults are consenting. I just think that some people approach it with more sincerity and real love than others.
There are also a lot of whitewashed Asian-Americans who are dilettantes indulging in something that seems cool instead of genuinely exploring their roots. I don't like that either and I don't think I'm hypocritically condoning one and condemning the other.

Heh... I ripped this off some other site. But it sums up what I think. If you fin in one or more of these, you're probably an Asiaphile, if not, well then you don't have anything to worry about. And I think anyone, White, Black, Brown, Yellow, whatever, would be repulsed at the typical Asiaphile's thought pattern.
A brief profile of men afflicted with "yellow fever"
ORIGINS: Asiaphiles are typically found residing in major U.S. cities, although increasing numbers have been venturing overseas in their quest to "get an oree-enul woman".
NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH: Intelligent, non-racist and socially-functional men who are free of fetishes and racial bias.
CHARACTER TRAITS:
- Poorly developed masculine identities, pathetically uncomfortable with themselves, inept at romance with women of their own race.
- Resentment of white females' assertive, strong-willed personality traits (whether real or perceived).
- Ignorant and narrow-minded, eager to adopt fallacious western media stereotypes of Asian women.
- Desperate need to assume a dominant, father-like role in their relationships with women.
- Exaggerated perception and objectification of Asian females.
- Uncanny ability to determine one's breast size and country of origin within three seconds of sighting a potential AF target.
- A compulsion to trash women, particularly western women, in order to justify their inadequacies and bolster their self image.
- Insatiable appetite for Asian cultural trivia, which is used to camouflage/legitimize their underlying fetish (a superficial knowledge of Asian art impresses the shit outta the babes).
- Extreme paranoia and defensiveness regarding their relationships with AF's ("What the hell are you looking at, you racist AM asshole?..")
- Unable to accept non-whites or women as equals. Insistent racist stereotypers. Chauvinistic.
- Subconsciously attracted to tiny women because they make him feel powerful, and are less threatening to his fragile ego.
- Disdains ethnic studies; regards it as a waste of taxpayer's money and an ultimate threat to white male privilege and cultural hegemony.
- Thinks that the poverty, prostitution and white cultural imperialism in certain Asian countries is a good deal while it lasts. Favorite holiday destination: Bangkok
- Enjoys playing "divide and conquer" mind games with naive, culturally-insecure AF's ("don't worry, Yoko, I won't let those chauvinistic, abusive Japanese men hurt you anymore...")
- On visits to Asia as a (sex) tourist, expects every native AM to kowtow to him, massage his feet and play butler, while the native AF's line up to show him the proper "lotus position" technique. He then considers himself "worldly" and an indisputable expert on asian people and culture.
- Considers the terms "chink, chinaman, jap, gook and slope" to be terms of endearment and certainly no reason to get offended.
- Believes that racism does not exist because he, as a WM, has never experienced it first hand.
- Gets a warm fuzzy feeling when watching those action flicks in which the white male hero invariably beats the shit out of ten AM ninjas and rescues the AF nympho from her evil, warlike AM oppressors.
- Believes that the only reason an Asian person would dislike him or disapprove of his exploitive, pathological relationships with Asian women is because they are racist.
- Associates with AM's only when he is interested in meeting their sisters.
- Threatened and insecure in the presence of any culturally-perceptive Asian person or any AM not fitting his stereotype of the quiet, marginalized, "model minority" geek.
- Denial of all of the above.

For what it's worth, apparently some white chicks are proud of their favorite brand of riceness. So if you're an Asian guy looking for some, there's some lonely white booty out there you could try to rock. Just pretend you're Japanese, man. Not like they'll know the diff anyhow.
Just use a lot of sentences that begin with "In my country...," "In my culture, we...," and take them out for sushi.
I'm what you might call an Otaku. I prefer to call myself a Nihonophile. Besides CosPlay, my interests in Japan encompass just about every aspect of contemporary pop culture. That includes j-rock, anime, video games, you name it. Even television commercials. I'm a California native currently studying the Japanese language. My goal is to eventually move there as frequent shopping visits are out of the question unless the cost of plane tickets drops below a grand apiece. Until then, I have to content myself with paying an arm and a leg for import tariffs on my purchases.
The other incident to which I owe my hobby was that of taking a friend of mine to pick up black hair dye. I'd recently discovered that the primary pigment for acheiving a good blue-black in most home hairdye kits was a carcinogen linked to Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, and had vowed to quit using it. At that point my friend informed me of the brand she swore by, a powder haircolor imported from Japan which she'd only been able to find locally at a Japanese grocer. I'd never seen such a place before, and it was filled with the greatest collection of what can only be termed neat stuff: ceramic figures of the Beckoning Cat, lace and satin fans, dried barbecue flavored squid munchies, candy prizes, and of course, groceries. The best thing of all, however, were the labels written in mangled Engrish.
There are other draws to this country; the emphasis of education and civility in spite of one of the highest populations in the world, centuries of tradition grounded in honor and beauty, and staggering technological innovations. Come on, what could be cooler than talking vending machines?

Yeah, women who fetishize Asian men freak me out even moreso than their male counterparts... If only because at least the men are drawing on countless "me so horny" stereotypes as their reason, but little to no equivalent stereotypes exist for Asian men. I find it even weirder when I meet two American 'otaku' who are going out with each other; two people who are completely obsessed with a foreign culture, yet still retain enough cultural superiority that they won't actually mix with the people they obsess over...

i think maybe they just couldn't find suitable japanese mates?
i think this is the case with my cousin. he's chinese and he's a japanophile. he's dating a chinese girl that's also a japanophile. he told me once that he thinks japanese girls have bigger boobs than chinese girls and that they're also friendlier. i told him he's been watching too much anime.

Stereotypically, I always had the image that the typical nasty asiaphile would be hitting up an ugly Asian girl....and the ones who were not asiaphiles (i.e. with class, charm, etc.) would be more likely to be with a hot Asian girl. This is all generalization of course, but if I saw a white guy with a hot Asian girl, I'd be less likely to think that he was an asiaphile, simply b/c i would assume that asiaphiles would be willing to settle for any girl as long as she was Asian, therefore even if she was extremely hard on the eyes it wouldn't matter to him......um...dunno if that made sense, haha

true, but i can beat the ones that make comments that flat out make them asiaphiles, but not the females. the females i just see as dispacable and nasty. not for being obsessed with another country or culture, but because they're fucking psychotics. it's always "my asian bf....." then they talk to me like i should know what the fuck they're talking about just because of Cindy...

When I read it, I wondered if that rule extended to Asian men too...the few she may actually date. And oh yes, it definately said "Asian," not any specific ethnicity.
Here's the link to the Maxim article (http://www.maximonline.com/entertainment/articles/article_4827.html).

Who shuts down sites like that? What happened to free speech!!! I used to be so proud that our nation allows us to say all kinds of fucked up bullshit we want without being censored. I guess that's no longer true? Wait, unless PEOPLE not like, internet cops shut the site down. In which case, rock on.

maybe the dude just got sick of paying good beer money to keep that kinda braindead whining and ranting on the web.
oh yeah and censorship refers to the government coming in and taking away someone's right of speech. not to the situation of some guy who is too much of a wimp to keep a site up and running after some people email him to tell him he's a jackass.

Well,
It's probably because Japanese people aren't interested in meeting White people who are obsessed with Japan. Most Japanese who want to meet White people are either obsessed with America or England or Australia, so why would they want to meet someone obsessed with what they want to escape from?
Furthermore I think it is nearly impossible for these types of people to meet Japanese people in the USA or to mingle with asians in the USA because most Asians will not accept them at all because they don't want to have their life picked apart or to be obsessed over because of something they did not acieve, but were born with. Plus most of these otaku have severe emotional problems and low self esteem that they atribute to their Whiteness, since school these days teaches you that to be white is to be evil, so they want to be the minority.

and as for that asiaphile site..
most websites are achived(copies of it) are kept on the
"internet archive"
check out http://www.archive.org
visit those sites that died over 8 years ago.
or visit older versions of the sites you love that are around today.
Its interesting looking back on internet history.
Update:
I looked it up and they do have one record of the site
not all the pictures are there but the content(text) is.
http://web.archive.org/web/20011102023428/....com/index.html (http://web.archive.org/web/20011102023428/http://www.mrasiaphile.com/index.html)
and as for the comment on freedom of speech..
the rights are not absolute.
as has been proven time and time again
In times of war(or whenever the government feels it is convinient)
our rights can be taken away very easily
we've already lost a ton thanks to 9/11 giving the government alot of excuses.
but i digress. thats a totally different issue.
:D
Second Update: I hope this site is a joke.... it seems to be taking it self seriously
and thats very very disturbing.

A white woman interviews an out and proud asiaphile in this [old] salon article (http://dir.salon.com/col/weav/1998/05/06weav.html). I'm pretty familiar with the Asian or AA perspective. It was interesting to read it from a white woman's perspective.
Here's some excerpts.
I have never been interested in blonds," said Ted. "Never! I mean, I've tried it, sort of the way gay guys have gone out with women, just to see what it felt like. But it didn't work."
Ted and I were sitting outside on unsteady green plastic chairs at a brew pub in North Beach. It was a freezing spring evening and gusts of fog were whipping up Columbus Street. He was here to talk about his penchant for Asian women -- a proclivity I'd started to notice in college among the frat boys, and as far as I could tell had pretty much evolved into an obsession for certain white guys.
"There's two types of Asian women," he continued. "Those that were born here, of immigrant parents, and those that were born over there. The ones recently immigrated will date either Western or Asian men, but the American-born tend to find Asian men too soft and effeminate. They want a stronger kind of man, so I think I'm sort of a compromise." He leaned over to the drunk tourist group. "Could you not blow your smoke over here? Thank you."
I rearranged my notes. I wasn't sure where to begin. "What kind of Asians are we talking about?"
"Chinese," he said firmly. "Koreans are thought to be the most beautiful, but I think they wear too much makeup. I remember when I was an adolescent boy, watching ABC's 'Wide World of Sports.' And those cute little Chinese gymnasts, with their small breasts. I remember being so excited by them. I don't like large breasts -- they're so sloppy or something."
I wrote that down. He added, "You know, I can't speak for every guy, but for me it's a real personal interest in Asian culture as a whole --"
"Is that right?" I looked at him levelly.
"Uh-huh. I've spent a lot of time there, and I like the simplicity of their life, the family values -- because I don't have that in my own life. My parents are together and all that, but we're not close. And I like the idea of having someone who's not like me, who's not another professional who works all the time, being a part of my life."

That article sort of pissed me off. He goes on to say he likes the simplicity of [asian women's lives], the family values, etc... All I can think of at that moment while reading it was..."This guy's an idiot."
He lumps asian women into two types? Those born here from immigrant parents and those not born here? Big mistake. His words convey a stereotypical view on the whole of the asian populace, sparing no sense of individuality. I could imagine the next words out of his mouth would be, "I could get any American-born asian female that I want."

And I like the idea of having someone who's not like me, who's not another professional who works all the time, being a part of my life."
ya, i remember this article. the white woman sounded like she despised the guy. go her!! :D

hey i met another asiaphile this past weekend. how can i tell he's an asiaphile? my ABC friend from L.A. spent a night with him and in the morning, he sang her a mandarin song, even though he knew that she doesn't know any mandarin or is really interested in asian cultures. hell, she majored in american history. but it's all good, as long as the girl doesn't mind. he's a nice guy, maybe a little dumb, but nice nonetheless.

Well, as a non-asian, my def of an Asiaphile is this, one who stereotypes Asian women. I suppose I "understand", not relate, to having a strong attraction to Asian women. But the person is like, I want a Chinese girls, so she can cook me up some "chop suey", well I believe that is wrong. Asiaphiles are also the kind of people, who date Asians, be it male or female for the sole purpose of sex. Stereotypes like . . . "Asian men have 1001 positions" and "And Asian women give the best BJs". Simplest way to put Asiaphile = one who dates on the basis of stereotypes. And to those who says, Asiaphiles are those who can not date someone of their own race. I am 17, I don't live the "Bling-Bling" lifestyle. My grammar is proper and I argue politics like a 30 yr old, black girls at my age don't find that attractive.

but honestly. is it really because black girls don't find you attractive that you want to date outside of your race? i mean, this is one of the basic arguments for many asian girls (concerning asian guys) on why they would rather date outside their race. maybe it's true, but i can't help but find it a poor justification. i have no problems with interracial relationships, and i have been in some interracial relationships myself. but i just find it kind of strange that some interracial couples so rigorously try to justify their relationships, when there's really no need to do that.

Well naturally interracial jump to the defensive. You have to remember they are look'd down upon. It is like they have a physical handicap and everyone just needs to stare. All the god damn time. I don't need justification. I was just talking about how people were saying people date asians, because they can't get with there own race, maybe it was a joke. But if not it is quite ignorant.
And black girls find me physically attractive. It is culturally speaking, the fact that the way you dress can make or break you. Especially in the age group I am in. I do not dress well at all. I wear what I want when I want. That is why, blacks chicks don't date me. But they will sleep with me. I am just a pussy, and have some kind of false sense of morality or something.

Technically speaking, I would imagine my relationship is an interracial one. And I have to say I don't feel like I'm looked down upon and I don't find it natural to jump to the defense about it. In fact I've never had to defend my relationship. Who the hell cares who I live or sleep with? No one.
