Let's hear about Japanese food. Besides sushi or tempura, what kind of Japanese foods do you like? Anyone like cold noodles? I converted my husband to cold noodles during the summer. I haven't had the same luck with the rest of the family or non-Japanese friends. If I make a cold noodle dish they just microwave it. :(
So what do you like? oyako don? shabu shabu? zarusoba? One of my faves is zarusoba. I haven't come in contact with anyone totally non-Japanese that likes it. Another one of my faves is mostly for sentimental value. My mom would toast up some mochi so it was crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside, dipped in really sugary soy sauce.

mmm...zaru soba. that's my usual. but here's a stupid question: do you mix the wasabi in with the noodles or into the dip?
i also like this dish - it's really plain. rice with mushrooms, carrots, stewed beef, and various roots....in a kinda sweet sauce. does anyone know what i'm talking about?

My brother absolutely loves Morimoto's restaurant in Philadelphia...he raves about the Japanese food there. Personally, I've never had more than just sushi and noodles unfortunately. I've never experienced real Japanese food.

my dad's the same way! i think that chinese people just aren't used to eating cold noodles. maybe? i took him out for naengmyun (buckwheat noodles in cold broth) in koreatown, but he said he couldn't eat it b/c it was making his gums cold. then he started dipping his noodles into this cup of hot broth that was served on the side and was like, "mmm...much better :) " all the waitresses were laughing at us

I stick the wasabi in the sauce. hee hee.. you're taking your chances listening to a watered down American Japanese though.

que es zarusoba?? soba = noodles?
i love all kinds of japanese food. haven't really tried too much outside of the realm of sushi/tempura, but i like katsu don, miso ramen, tonkatsu, and, well, i don't know if this is japanese, or only specific to this one restaurant i know of, but i think it's called kamemeshi??? it's sticky rice w/chicken/mushrooms/assorted stuff served in this wooden container thingie that kinda looks like a dim sum steamer. i haven't had that ever since i moved out of south san francisco though... oh man. i have to go back! :o
edit: oh, and i really like sukiyaki too. and shabu shabu. and japanese food. yes. :D
