my official screen name is tapestrybabe...
i've been using it ever since 1999...
i just thought up this ID cuz i'm into tapestry weaving...
and i was just curious how everyone else here chose their yw screen name??
Erendani

Tapestry weaving sounds hard.
My screen name is derived from the name of a star. It might also sound a bit familiar to fans of the "BattleTech" universe.
BeTheReds

I have many screen names
AOL instant messenger: Gunmo3 (from Kpop singer Kim Gun Mo, and I like his 3rd Album) I had it since 1997.
geocities: hugeeuge
Yahoo: yujinishuge
Yellowworld: BeTheReds is from Be The Reds, from the red t-shirt that supporters of the Korean soccer team wore.

from three mile island. too many characters. then.. in a sudden flash of insight.. i realized that island could be shortened to isle, thus rhyming with mile.

contra_diction
01-23-2003, 07:21 PM
contra_diction was contrived to indicate my philosophy on words. i'm against them, kind of contradictory considering my most-desired pasttime (rhyme). not being hypocritical, rather just trying to represent how misunderstood i always end up being. this is accomplished through my screenname.

Really though, I think I wanted just wanted to be up front that I was only part Asian. Some Asians aren't comfortable with that so I thought it would be a good way to feel it out. hah, until I knew your name I always figured "kasia" was supposed to be read as rhyming with "Asia."
my YW screenname is an old joke about cheating affirmative action in Malaysia. actually an uncle of mine used to run such an "Ali Baba company" - staffed all by Chinese ("baba") but with an ethnic Malay frontman ("Ali") as the de jure owner so as to qualify as "bumiputra-owned" company and get advantages in government contracting.
But since there's so few Malaysians here, everyone just thinks of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves or something like that. that's cool too, I guess.

That what I thought you meant. But I never ask you. it so funny. But then again only a Malaysian would be so underminded to do that to qualify for bumiputra status. <_<

Of all the phonemes that native speakers of Asiatic languages supposedly aren't able to pronounce well, none of them hold a candle to 'ip.' As in Philip. My parents (along with 90% of their friends) resort to calling me 'Philll-AH'.
Then there's my grandma who has her own unique variation. 'Feeelllah-poo.'
The real reason I prefer Phil.. revealed..

when i was in high school, my friend's called me baby, just cuz i was 3 years younger than everyone else in my class. i used to be a dancer and there was this time i was doing a break dance item at this concert and a couple of my friends saw me ...when i was 14.. and at that time this sitcom "blossom" was really popular ..and the starting of the show was where blossom came out and danced like crazy.. so they called me blossom. i used to use the nick babyblossom, then i started japanese classes and found out that blossom meant sakura in japanese.. so hence, babysakura :)

maldito
01-25-2003, 03:25 PM
maldito is what my Filipino grandmother called me since I was such a stubborn kid, a rascal, always getting into trouble. For Filiipinos and Mexicans "maldito" can be affectionate but for other Hispanics esp. Central Americans it's offensive, b/c it means "dammed" or something like "ill-mannered".
Used to go by "binky the almighty" on BBS's but then I got on the net in 1993 and got a shell account. Most Unices don't accept spaces or login names that long so I had to come up with something quick. I was trying to think of a good idea, and "idea" is what stuck in my head, but that sounded dumb, so I just took "ism" instead. On most sites, I claim it if I can (Slashdot, everything2), but it is fairly common, a problem I ran into when I tried registering it for AIM. I wanted plain ism but that was taken so I had to settle with just ism. I didn't realize it would be a pain in the ass to convey via speech, "it's just ism, no, including the word just, that's j-u-s-t-i-s-m..." Seems there's a lot of regret in this topic. =)

i used to go by emily, which is not my real name, but a name of a cartoon character my friend made based on me. but... that gets old quick because everyone thinks it's my real name.
then, i got into emily the strange gear (an online comic which sells lot's of cool shirts, hoodies, etc...) and the main character emily has four cats who are always on the clothes i buy. so i sorta became kittygirl.
Shuriken
01-27-2003, 03:38 PM
This is from the site "Traditional Japanese Weapons":
The Shuriken: The word shuriken means "a dagger hidden in a palm," so all daggers small enough to hide in a palm were called by this name. They have many variety in their shape and usage. Some are starlike shaped, and thrown with spin. Some other are needlelike shaped, and thrown just like a throwing dagger. Though a shuriken can hardly penetrate armor protection, it was enough because ninja threw it at unarmed target mainly. Venom was used with shuriken normally.
Yeah, that describes me: small and venomous...
"Shuriken" most commonly means the star-like blade that is "thrown with a spin." Shuriken are also sometimes called "ninja throwing stars." I have a picture of one for my avatar. I also like the way the word is pronounced in English: SHURR-ih-ken. It has a nice ring to it...

ChinaLama
02-16-2003, 11:04 PM
This is gonna be controversial. But...ChinaLama b/c when I was in hs, i was a fervert Chinese nationalist, and i hated how the media portrayed Tibet as a pristine paradise until the Evil Commies came and ruined it. for gods sake, i thought, Tibet is a THEOCRACY. How can any American be so IN LOVE w/ a country whose gov't system we Constitutionally CANNOT accept. Plus, what's so appealing about men who claim to be gods? (granted supposedly the majority of Americans BELIEVE in a Man who said he was God). And didn't we get rid of the idea of serf societies hundreds of years ago? yet we're supporting a serf society ruled by priests as basically the Earthly ideal!
Well, anyway, ChinaLama came much later b/c i was reminescing on some old views i held, and well...actually just cuz it has a nice sound. :)
Ok...back on topic. Lama = rulers of Tibet. ChinaLama = China should rule the Lamas. :)

hi eveyone, i'm new to all this but i want to thank bluehoodie for hooking me up with this site. my screenname kuanyin is actually the name of a buddhist deity known as the Bodhisatva Kuan Yin. She reached enlightenment but decided not to enter nirvana until all beings get there. so She's real helpful to me. i think i may be a fanatic about Her as most of the time when i need a screenname i use this. if i had money i'd get a tattoo of Her on my back...
wow. you sound so devoted.
I usually only pray to her in the morning and whenever i need help with something as a form of special entity watching over me, i guess. or maybe when i need a little "good luck" or "guidance". i feel so selfish. my mom is actually very devoted. to both kuanyin and buddah. she does the chanting or praying every morning.

Tao, your right, i should write "guan yin." but my family is chinese from taiwan (or some say "foreigners" in taiwan) and we have that whole poilitcal thing about communists vs nationalists and so i use the not so easy to read english system.
...and while i feel i have diva moments, i wouldn't call me goddess, especially since americans usually call her that and then the whole buddhist perspective gets thrown down the toilet. but thanks!
kayla, i'm pretty devoted, but more fanatic...i think my karma is heavy...

there is no god! there is only humanity... and that is the supreme evil in which we preach against. religion is a tool, just as the law is, to make people comply with rules and regulations. people call me bitter because i say the truth... and the truth is that they are living behind a wall of lies and comfort. but once you reach the edge and break the walls- u cant go back. and so i sit on the cliffs of insanity waiting for the end of i, one of over six billion...

Since tapestrybabe asked, I did change my YW name. Realized that I was using it in multiple boards. Rather than seem like an egotist, I decided to change it here in favor of something more Asian.
Chotto Matte is Japanese for "excuse me" or "excuse me, damn it", depending on intonation.

Chotto matte is often used in contexts that are equivalent to those for "excuse me" in English. However, a more literal meaning of chotto matte would be "just a moment." For example, if you were walking away from someone, and they wanted to get your attention, they might say, "Chotto matte kudasai" — "just a moment please [I need to detain you a bit longer]." Chotto matte can also mean that you need more time.

My avatar changes a lot so it doesn't mean anything. Right now it's John Talbain of DarkStalkers fame. Meh.
As for the screen-name, "Emperor" because I'm an obsessive slave driving (but fair and pleasant) despot in every club, society, and project I lead and "Mike" because...well...it's my name.
Actually, I like "Emperor" because it's nice to say. :D
RasFarengi
07-31-2003, 12:19 PM
Well my avatar is my wife and I. I put that up cause I got tired of people asking me..."why are you interested in Asian issues...you're black..." Well pic is kind of self explanitory.
My name. Ras Farengi is Amharic (language of the main ethnic group in Ethiopia). Ras = first, great, most high, nobleman
Farengi = foreigner.
I dated a Ethiopian chick a long long time ago, and she was a African FOB, all her FOB friends called me Farengi. Then when I went to Asia...I was always called something...black devil, foreigner, something.
So I figured if I am going to be a foreigner, I should be a "great one..."
So Ras Farengi.

I bet you guys will never guess how I choose my name! *smirks*
I wanted an avatar that popped out so that I could find my posts in long threads, so I picked one with a bright color.
I choose this particular one because it kind of looks like a picture of me I was emailed the day I registered on the site.
i forget whether i explained my sn or not, but here it goes:
Tao is my last name. Funny thing is that everyone is familiar with the name except that very few Chinese have it as their last name, which i find sorta strange since it's such a cool name to have!
As for the pic, I recently took a profile shot of myslef with a digital camera and then used photoshop to render the sketch effect. I thought of doing that instead of just posting the actual pic cause then it'd be soooo boring and common.
hooligan

Eros 'cause I needed a screen name and then I saw the lube sitting on my desk.
Heheh... just kidding that (not that people in chatroom haven't asked if I was named after the lube...). Actually, it's 'cause years ago I got sick of my screen name and decided to use Eros since I was into Greek mythology. I especially liked the concept as Eros being the creationary force the bound opposites together.
As for my avatar, that was a pic taken of me with by mobile (by ricecracker during her many episodes of stealing my phone) earlier this summer. For whatever reason, I think it's a decent pic of me.

I wrangled my brain trying to figure out what SN to use permanently on this site...something that should reflect my nature and something I haven't used before elsewheres...
Irezumi = tattooing
Kiss = love doing this!
I like tattoos (even though as of yet I have none myself) and as an artist, I especially appreciate creative, well designed tattoos, preferrably on the sexy, tanned body of a woman! I write/draw erotica for fun and when I write, I use "Irezumi Kiss" as my nom de plume...

robotic: i like robots and like the idea of robots portraying human functions and possessing human qualities, hence the name!

i registered for the username when i was 12 (turned 13 {underage } in november '03)
the inspiration came from a friends t-shirt printing business (a robot as the official logo), and a site (http://chaoskids.com/ROBOTS/robots.html) i discovered.
but now the word 'robotic' carries many more connotations:
the pressure to conform, the inflexibility of fundamental human nature, or a need for rule, regulation and standardized living.

Sofa Rocker. Lifted off from a song by Sofa Surfers called 'Sofa Rockers', remixed by Richard Dorfmeister and found on the Kruder & Dorfmeister compilation album "The K&D Sessions".
I think 'sofa rocker' to me means just lounging on the sofa with headphones on and a cold beer in hand. Something I enjoy doing at the end of the day.

My lover picked this name--i think because that's how i like my rice. It's not too original so I had to add HK. Some of my family is in Hong Kong.
I am gay. 26 yrs, a lawyer, in faithful relationship for many years, but like to make new friends for talking.
I am in Vancouver now but will go to HK for a few months then back to US(California)
Cheers to all (thats the expression they use here)

Plus I ain't too bad with him in the video game. I still got my Neo Geo.

sageb1
01-29-2007, 07:16 PM
it goes back to my dialup days and involves a multiline BBS, and the Simon n Garfunkel hit "Scarboro Fair" - u know, "parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme"; and yeh, i used all those herbs as handles too!
it also refered to the fact that i was 5-15 yrs older than anyone else, and made fun of the assumption that the older people are wiser.
by the time i found the internet circa 1991, it had evolved into the handle sageb1, which is a play on the latter definition of "sage" with the "b" standing for "bodhisattva".
also "sageb1" is a phrase that is my persona in-joke with Buddhism i.e. "sage be one" which defines what a buddha is and one key concept of most faiths i.e. being one with the divine.
is anyone with me so far? no, oh well.
