regular pearl ice tea. you could also add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra 50 cents.
My sister's FOB ex-BF once brought me to TenRen in Chinatown and I've only had the taro. I assume you're talking about bubble tea. I have no idea if it's powdered or not. Can anyone give recommendations to better retailers in NYC and northeast NJ? Or is TenRen the best I'll get? The only other time I had it was 2 years ago in the Philippines when my cousin got it for me (forgot the flavor). Do I lose my Asian badge?

I love the tea places in Oakland Chinatown. The best one is...umm...the one in a little grocery store...I forgot the name. My favorite is the Lychee flavor. They use real bits of LYchee for the flavor...yum. Fantasia in Milpitas also does this for Lychee.

Has anyone tried those home pearl tea kits? I tried one and it was horrible, but passable for those times I was trapped in Charlotte with no supply of PT. We were so desperate one day that we drove to Atlanta to this random tea place that also sold bubble tea. It wasn't that good, but it hit the spot.
We had the kit at http://www.bruceandclark.com/

from what i understand...the tapioca pearl drink originated from taiwan. later, in hong kong, they wanted to make the pearls bigger and renamed the drink "boba", meaning "big boobs".
Now most people in Taiwan call it "zhen zhu" meaning "pearls" because it's considered rude to order "boba" - "big breasts." It hasn't caught on yet because the use of the word "boba" is already so widespread and prevelant.

no, they would order in cantonese, using the cantonese reading of that word. i just have the habit of typing Chinese terms in pinyin when I'm writing in English, since Cantonese romanization is nonstandard and hard for many people to understand.

Boba is losing popularity. The hot sweet bean soups are all the rage now. It's their fault *points to the Cantonese YWers*
I'm Hakka. Aside from also being Indian. So don't blame me.
as for huhng dau sa, i always thought "sa" wasn't a thing, it just meant "crushed" or something like that. people usually write it as "sand" (sha1 of sha1 tan1) tho. But then maybe just cuz there's not really that many characters read "sa." Mmm. Red bean sand. I bet it is a good alternative choice to soapy water dumplings :P

In my mind I pronounced that 'why dubbers' since we don't have an official name and I didn't want to say 'Cantonese members.'

huhng dau literally translates to red bean. i don't know what the english word for sa is :P. maybe kasie will know.
