Yao finally battles Shaq, the `mountain' in his way (http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/sports/1740015)

By JONATHAN FEIGEN
Houston Chronicle

Their legends, given the shrinking world of their times, spread as tall tales do, reaching from Los Angeles to Shanghai and back.

The Los Angeles Lakers' Shaquille O'Neal would not seem to need another challenge, and the Rockets' Yao Ming has had more than enough. But they eagerly spoke of one another, pointing to this day for months -- since before Yao had stepped into O'Neal's world or worn a Rockets uniform -- as if each knew the other could offer him something no one else could.

This is how it always has been for giants. Bare-fisted brawlers could boast they could lick any man in the house, but they always found a challenger eager to measure himself. Muhammad Ali needed Joe Frazier. Bill Russell needed Wilt Chamberlain. Magic Johnson needed Larry Bird.

So Yao and O'Neal, each in his own unique way, called the other out. And tonight at 8:30, they finally meet at Compaq Center.

Hopefully people aren't expecting Ming to come in and dominate Shaq. Ming's having a fantastic rookie season and will be a great center for years to come -- but this is Shaq.

He looks very good. I'm surprised that he's got such good footwork, which you don't see in a lotta big guys. Kinda like Tim Duncan...

We'll see how long Yao can keep this up:)

Number wise, Shaq won hands down. But, I'm convinced no one in the league can contain Shaq as well as Yao. You can't shut Shaq down but Yao kept him at bay from his usual 5'-6' from the basket in the paint. Yao remained out of foul trouble till late in the fourth. Not bad for a rookie, I think Yao held it down.

Rockets win 108-104 in OT, Stopping the Lakers 5 game win streak!

Here's the boxscore if you're interested:

Yao Ming or Amare Stoudemire most likely candidates for rookie of the year.

Game of the year! It lived up to the hype. Sure Shaq got his, but Yao held his own. Most of his points were on Cato and in OT when Yao was all banged up and winded.

The dunk at the end was the icing on the cake!

It was Steve Francis's game. Fun to watch, though. Could ESPN's commentators have fawned over Yao any more?

It ran too late for me... I watched entire first quarter, fell asleep during 2nd and 3rd, watched 1/2 of fourth and all of over-time...

So basically, everytime time I actually watched, Yao Ming scored!

D00d! That dunk was sweeeeeeet!

What a great game. That 3 pointer by Francis to put the game into overtime - man, that was clutch. All basketball games should be like this!!!

Some thoughts on last night's game:

...when are the Lakers going to D-up on guards? They have one of the best defenders in the NBA in Kobe, but like the Kings showed last year and Houston last night, they get eaten alive by 'em...

...flagrant foul/technical my ass...

...if Kareem Rush keeps up that hot shooting, the Lakers may just have that outside scoring threat they've needed since Derek Fisher was hot in the playoffs and they went on a 15-0 run two years ago...

...I was very disappointed to see the Lakers lose since they've made a lot of headway recently on their road back to .500, but was happy to see Ming play so well. Now if only he'd start lifting some weights with bunboy...

Nevermind still tied for first....that damn AB shaving points off now he's into it, finally.

Edit: I got a kick out of the fact that Shaq's dad and the announcers kept bringing up the fact that Yao sent Shaq a christmas card. Yao's english is really good, if he actually did write that card without the help of a translator!

Word is he invited Shaq over for dinner before the game too. What a guy.
