NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE MIXED RACE EXPERIENCE
“(Em)powering the Mixed-Race Community” APRIL 4-5-6, 2003

(Seattle, WA) The MAVIN Foundation National Conference on the Mixed Race Experience will take place April 4-6, 2003 at Seattle University in Seattle, Washington. Five hundred participants from
across the U.S. and Canada will converge for the largest 3-day conference exploring the mixed-race experience of its kind, ever. The conference aims to create a sense of community among
mixed-race and transracially adopted young people, as well as to help educate parents, teachers and child welfare providers about this rapidly growing population’s unique needs. The conference
is hosted by MAVIN’s two multiracial student organizations: Hi’brid at Seattle University and MiXed at the University of Washington.

I'm considering going, though it might be slightly out of my age group if it's aimed at college students. Anyone else interested?

I worry that organizations like this cater too much to people of black-white mixes and talks about black-white issues. Though if it's going to be held in seattle, i suspect that there might be a pretty good asian prescence.

re: black-white mixes and talks about black-white issues -- I'm sure they'd like to keep the conference open and broad, so I don't think that's going to be an issue. I would say there will be an undoubtedly Asian presence.

You think they're gonna have beandip at the buffet table? I'm a doubledipper.

If it's in Seattle there should be a vast mix of people. Depends on how much of the community they get the word out to and which communities they contact.

Well I've gone to various Japanese-American events in Seattle like Obon. And when you consider the outmarriage rate for Japanese-Americans I'd be willing to bet real money that there will be quite a few JA hapa there.

I said JA hapas. Could be black, white, native or hispanic mixed. Could be a little hottie potpourri for you. Remember to take pics to sell back to SWK.
