Chinese mistresses do it to escape poverty

BEIJING - Many women in China resort to the pariah status of being a mistress to a married man not because of love but economic survival, a survey said.

Conducted in the southern province of Guangdong, where many rich Hongkong and Chinese men put up mistresses in apartments, the survey found that 74.5 per cent of mistresses became an er nai or 'second wife' to shake off poverty, the Chinese news portal Sina.com said.

Only 13 per cent of the women said they did it for love while 42 per cent said it did not bother them never having a legal marital status.

Most of the mistresses were poor young women from the countryside or those made unemployed in cities.

The survey said the widespread practice of women becoming mistresses highlighted the lack of social security in China, where the poor are left to fend for themselves with minimal or no help from the government.

Many women who leave villages to search for work in cities must support their families back home.

The practice of having mistresses is rooted in traditional Chinese culture, where men in the past were allowed to keep concubines, but it was outlawed after the communists came into power in 1949.

In recent years, it has again become common as Chinese men become wealthier.

The survey also found most men said they kept mistresses for excitement and pleasure. Some men also cited a sour relationship with their wife, while others believed a man should have several wives.

Still some men said they just wanted to keep up with the trends.

The poll, which covered 1,710 men and women, was conducted by the Guangzhou Women's Federation.

but yeah i know guys like that in HK. it's about an hour train ride to shenzhen and they go visit their mistresses on the weekends. and many businessmen go to the mainland for business anyway. there's actually a neighborhood in shenzhen that is popular for where mistresses are housed.

i wish HK men would stop doing this though because it makes many HK girls very insecure with themselves. and that equals emotional high maintenance. which is annoying.

It's not that uncommon for a wealthy Chinaman to have a mistress. When I was kid, one of the members on the executive board of his newspaper company had like 4 of them.

hmmm not exactly. since the ratio of male to female is practically 1:1.
but i guess you can argue that some men are meant to have multiple women and then other men are meant to have none.

well but seriously though. what that article said is true. i mean i was just living in HK. there are many many women across the border that would be willing to be a HK businessman's mistress just so he would put her in an apartment and give her money and stuff. it is VERY easy for a guy in HK to cheat, even for the most unattractive of guys, because an average income in HK is already a lot in mainland china.

i mean the ratio is not significant enough that men are complaining of a "shortage"
plus many women go down to guangdong from the north to be in the sex industry or to be mistresses

Same concept though. Married men and women doing things consentually for whatever reasons they might have.

er... that's not exactly true. they wouldn't starve if they didn't do it. but they'd be living a lot better lives if they did. many of these women do do it to get rich - relatively speaking that is.

yeah the latest agenda for the CCP is increasing the size of the middle class in china.

Same concept as like, prostitution. They always say that their situations FORCE them to do this, but that simply isn't true. Personally, I'd rather starve than have sex for money with somebody I don't want to have sex with... but I don't give a crap if that's what some people decide to do. That's their decision, nobody's forcing them to do anything else...

ok, well i was thinking third-world situations. the bums in asia make the bums in america look like millionnaires. that's why i never give them money. i give them cigarettes though.
