One of the best part time jobs to have in high school and college (if you can't get an internship) is retail.
I worked both stock and cash register, though. And it sucked having to come-up to the register after digging through piles of stuff in the stockroom, sweeping up, and being all sweaty.

Sure, you'll find Asians working in the more metrosexual, NYC-street-fashion-type shops, like BR, A|X, Benetton. We add a wordly, exotic, trendy feel to the whole store (through the eyes of your avg. shopper), which is what the company wants since their fashion tries to reflect these qualities. I don't think I've ever been to a BR that didn't have an Asian salesperson...

One of my really close college friends worked at Nordstrom in SF in men's shoes, after college. Only for like a year. He had a BA but he didn;t have much choice... gotta do what you gotta do.
BUT... he made a LOT of $$$. Way more than some of our friends in the corp world. Haha.... Some of those guys in Men's Suits make 6 figures EASILY. He sold 3 pairs of alligator shoes (like $1600 a pair) and made a nice comission. That store attracted a lot of celebrities. He met lots of the 49ers.

I had a few high school friends in retail, so yes. A job's a job, right? Teenagers need money.

a lot of those guys who work at Nordstrom (women's shoes) are pretty attractive (and in relation to this thread, they're mostly asian). they have to wear suits to work, that sucks for them, but they make good eye candy. goodlookin asian guys work at BR too, but BR's style's a bit preppy for me.
does GNC count as retail? i had to use a cash register. it was a pretty kickback job. small store, and i often worked by myself, so i read more beefcake magazines than i'd like.

hahaha... with the exception of my friend, all (or most) of the guys we worked with at that store were gay. not just gay, but like flaming gay. even the asian ones. he had the best stories.
i guess it just goes to show that women in SF have a hard time finding an attractive, well-dressed guy with a good personality that is straight...

I think everyone needs a little bit of retail experience. After 3 years of retail experience, I can honestly state that I hate it (and boy, am I glad that I'm out of it), but retail does teach you a lot about people, in general.
You learn to figure out, within seconds, whether or not someone's going to be a pleasant or a problem customer. You learn not to piss off people by mistake (or piss off people on purpose and get away with it).
In general, I think everyone can benefit from it.

Yeah, after a while you get tired of hearing, "CUSTOMER SERVICE"!
Me: "I hear you. I see him. Tell the fat dude to take his thong underwear to some other register!"

I like my Asian Starbucks girl. She always remembers my order, 'a tall Latte, extra hot.' Wait, I do sound like an Asianphile, don't I?
Back when I was little, there was no Asian working in a retail store at the mall closest to my house. If there were I don't remember them. Oh there was this one store that sold martial arts stuffs. The employees were all Asians.

Emporio Armani on Brompton road in
England.
We didn't hang out, but i'd talk to her
whenever i went in to go shop. mostly
to find out when the sales were gonna
begin.

The thing with pretty girls working in retail, along with waitresses, is that it's IMPOSSIBLE to hit on them. You shouldn't even bother. Just because they're so used to hearing so much BS from every guy every single day.
I worked in the stockroom at Nordstrom one summer in high school. It was the suckiest job I've ever had, but as a result, I have infinite patience with service workers (except for snotty salespeople at nicer clothing stores). I'm the kind of person who would sympathize with the waiter who jerks off into a rude customer's entree. "Mmm, I like the hollandaise sauce at this joint!"

I merely like her because she remembers my order. I never plan to hit on her although having described her as 'my Asian starbucks girl' may have given you the wrong idea. I know when I read that it sounded that way.
I used to work as a waiter, a host and a bartender. I got hit on by customers also, but most of the times they wanted to get freebies or be seated quicker. There were occasions though where girls want to meet me after work, but I turned them all down. I felt werid about going out with my customers at the time.

Oh, that wasn't directed at you. Also, I wasn't making a normative judgment, but merely pointing out that it's difficult to hit on such people. Actually, my cousin once-removed met his wife at the mall. She was working at a store that sold sunglasses. Cheesy but true.

I hate being so predictable. I always mix it up with a, "no, I'll have an xxx instead".

I worked at Sears when I was in college. It was great, I sold sporting goods, so I got to work in a golf shirt and sweats. It was commissioned too, so everytime we sold a swimming pool (yes people actually did but em from us), a pool table or a treadmill, it was good bling-bling.
