View Full Version : dyeing our hair blonde = dying to be white?

so some argue that when asian chicks dye their hair, they're actually engaging in self-hatred and trying really hard to conform to the white standard of beauty.
what do you think?
i personally think that highlighted hair (on asians) can be very pretty. and white girls, b/c of their natural hair color and texture, won't even be able make their hair look like that.
i'm not making sense. what do you think?

k...went thru that whole gotta be a blonde..tan..really fit, thing in my mid-twenties...I must say I got more looks...was it just 'cause of the blonde thing...maybe.
but you're right...self expression can be a beautiful thing...though sometimes it can be just a major..."i'm here..look at me"...i've seen that one too. now that i'm an older women i tend to fuss less and lean more towards looking more natural w/ my make-up and clothes....
but blonde was fun for a season 8)

for me it boils down to the personal & individual WHY behind whatever it is you've done to yourself...and does it actually suit you? (like the time my bf let me walk out of the house thinking my tangerine streaks were actually cool - babyboy shoulda told me i looked crazy :x )
for inkpainter: RIGHT ON, SISTER. ALL HAIL OLDER WOMEN!!!

Yeah, I agree with this. It all has to do with your intent behind it.

i dye my hair all the time -- but its juss for fun, not because im trying to be white or that i hate the way i look. i highlighted it earlier this year and it looked very pretty. now its deep red. if it looks good on u, i say go for it.

ok, if an asian is influenced by the white media that blonde hair is better... than that says a lot about the self esteem of the person... Or that says a lot about their self hate for being asian and their natural black hair.
Yet, on the other hand.. I still feel an asian is able to dye their hair blonde just for mere self expression.. like how one would dye their hair any other color.... and they still can have their sense of asian identity...
It all depends on the individual.... and where they're coming from.

i completely disagree. i don't think self-esteem has much to do with the forces of socialization.

I dunno... I think self esteem, lack of self confidence can play a part of it.. I mean, if thats what you grow up believing and seeing in the media... that blonde hair is more beautiful when you have black hair... And lets say all your peers at school have blonde hair while you have black hair... and you dye your hair to be blonde in order to want to fit in.. I think thats a reflection of ones self esteem, that feeling of not being good enough cuz you have black hair... that feeling of peer pressure to be like everyone else... not being self confident enough in your own skin and to be your own individual...
but than again, maybe i dont fully understand the term socialization...

It's a fact of life that if you're living in the US, you're heavily influenced by Caucasian standards of beauty. I think some Asians attempt to conform to that standard without truly realizing it. It's true that there are those who dye their hair blue or green as a means of self expression, but most do it because they'd like to look in the mirror and see something different. That, being, someone not looking too much like the "typical asian".
It might be just me, but when I see an Asian girl walking down the street with blonde hair and blue eyes, strutting her (insert famous designer brand here), I just think to myself, "how sad", "sick", or "damn that's freaky".

that reminds me...i came across this poem in a webpage a long ass time ago...been looking for it ever since cuz i didnt bookmark the page...but its about how the author finds it sad that asian girls dont see their true beauty and arent satisfied with having dark hair and dark eyes. he writes about the dying of the hair and wearing colored contacts....then he finishes by saying true pride is being satisfied with ur natural looks. and now ill go back to searching for it...

I wanted to either dye or streak my hair crimson, but then two of my friends did both. So then I wanted to dye my hair indigo, and now I'm planning to streak it indigo. It's not because I want to look better (though that'd be a plus), it's because I want to be unique.

haha no but theres this trait that runs ever few gens in my family that causes someone to have very, very light brown hair. it juss happened to be me this gen. so i get a lot of questions about whether or not im mixed or adopted, etc etc and of course all my friends think i dye it, since they all try to dye their hair to be my color.

My hair's similar to Princess'. My hair's between light and dark brown, but it has red, blue-ish (depending on lighting), and especially honey highlights. All natural. People ask if I dye my hair too. I really hate that. But other than that, I'm very happy with my hair. I prefer it over having black hair, since it suits me more.
