I'm not a big fan of America but NYC just rocks - they don't call it the best city in the world for no reason!
manhattan is cool, but the rest of NYC... eh.... it's ok.

Japan because I would feel more comfortable living there. It's all about what culture you prefer, there is no true BEST.

Actually, the whole WORLD is full of racists, it just happens that in Asian countries, you're not the one getting shitted on, so it doesn't seem that way.

if you can get a work visa there, you can do it. there are many expats in HK. although many have also moved out because of the economic downturn. and if you work there for 7 years straight, you'll get permanent residency there.

Haha. My friend's aunt went to Japan once to live there. She bought a small cottage by the country or something, and since she was white, the nearby village decided to pay a visit. What other way to say welcome than to burn her house down? Apparently, she was a foreigner devil. Funny story, but sad.

 I've been told that by my numerous people who have lived in NYC. They say that NYC is more European or at least not really American in its outlook. I don't know if this is true or not but what I do know is that you get so many beautiful women from all around the world here along with so many things and places to see and do along with excellent restaurants to eat.
:D

Thank god my folks got of the boat in NYC and not some po'dunk bumblefuck place.

I love Chicago, even though the weather sucks -- good mix of people, relatively clean, pretty inexpensive compared to NYC or San Fran. I have to defend the USA.

For personal reasons (such as no relatives and lack of language) I have to exclude most non English and non Cantonese speaking countries. The French are rude -- to Americans. Canada and Australia should be nice though if I had to pick a place outside the US.

HK is too frenzied and polluted (I hear) to live in (too expensive too). Finally, China -- can't speak read/write Chinese or speak Mandarin for shit. I think I actually have more relatives stateside than in China.

Yeah, HK life is frenzied. Your baseline cost of living (rent, utilities, food, and transport) might be quite low, you'll spend a lot more on shopping and entertainment activities cuz there's always so much stuff to do and people (at least real world people ... students are different, though) don't just spend an afternoon hanging out at each other's place, they go out and do stuff.

if it's important to you, air up in new territories is not all that bad, you'll just have a pain in the ass commute. But your rent will be a lot cheaper. Also if you always eat in indoor restaurants with nice service, shop in malls, take the subway, and club in Lan Kwai Fong, you will spend as much as you would in a city in the US.

I'm starting to think my ideal situation would be to live in Japan and take frequent trips to HK/Southern China for shopping.

yeah you can always spend lots of money in HK. everywhere you go there're places that'll gladly take your money. but you can also save a lot depending on your lifestyle.

for me, i actually like the frenziness in HK. perhaps i'd get tired of it when i get older. but i actually really liked waking up to the street noises below and seeing so many people out and about. it was comforting for me.

true that koreans for example theres is alot of racism look at the recent us military base protests and shops telling americans they cant eat there, racism is different in the us cuz there are so many different races, but in other countries its just part of the cultural norm and no ones bothering to rise up and challenge those norms.

yeah good point. racism seems to be more institutionalised and accepted in other countries.

Okay, my turn. I looked at all your list and he is my take

Hong Kong (went there during the summer): True, that is my hometown and I love that place, but... No jobs available, jobs available low paying... even the skilled ones, piracy (oh wait, that's good). Tranportation costs are going waaaaaaaay up. As for the rascism, in Hong Kong there just isn't enough minorities to spread the hate around. You got your accepted racial slurs for gwei lo (whites), hak gwei (blacks), and ah cha (Hindus and Muslims). Oh yeah, there's also some sort of construction anywhere. I used to live in an apartment where they were building a school next door. At 9:00 AM the steam hammer starts rocking.

Japan (based on a vacation a few years ago): You can get Japanese stuff cheaper outside of Japan. Food is good but you'll never be full after a meal. Everything is expensive. Almost everyone smokes there (there is no non-smoking section).

Singapore (based on a friend's account): Strict as HELL. They look down on Cantonese. They control the press. Get arrested for buying gum. Geeks, geeks, and more geeks.

South Korea: Koreans... nuff said.

That's why I love the US. Peace and quiet, cars, interesting people, different settings (that's where the car comes in), and relatively tolerant people. I'm probably be considered crazy if I live in HK right now.

No, even if it's somewhat practiced by the government (which I don't think it is), the nation-wide sentiment about racism is that it's a problem that needs to be taken care of. In other nations, it's not even an issue.

Our GOVERNMENT isn't racist. Its the PEOPLE who are working for the government (and only some of them, at that) that makes it racist sometimes.... SOMETIMES.

that stuff is bootleg thats why. my friend in malaysia just sent me a fake porter waist pack and everyone I showed it to was fooled. I think I'm gonna show it to my peeps at the porter store here and see what they think. korea owns the bootlegs scene. sometimes the korean bootlegs of gucci, lv, rolex stuff are better quality than the real deal. china makes the worst fakes, the colors are always a bit off, lotsa spelling errors, minor details like the nike swoosh are way off.

as for the portions of food, you get used to it after 2-3 weeks, then when you come back here you cant get used to the portions here for 2-3 weeks.

yeah
and japanese CDs are twice as expensive in japan. but those half priced CDs you get outside of japan are pirated. they're packaged just as good and the quality is just as good though. you can't tell the difference.

some arent bootleg some are just taiwanese versions. look at the label it will say pony canyon taiwan or avirex taiwan, unless there arent offices in taiwan for those labels, hmmmmm

One way to check if its bootleg check the number of songs it contains. Pirated stuff tend to have more songs in its version then on the actual album (even if it is the artist's debut album).
