How many different kinds of sea life will you eat? I'll devour just about any crustacean, fish, eel, cephalopod or mollusk but I don't think I eat any of the mammals (yet) or sluggy things like sea cucumbers. Okay, I've eaten sea slug but I don't like it.

As un-PC as it is, I'd like to try whale.

I'm cantonese and I'm engaged to a japanese chick, so I'll eat anything including endangered species!

I think I'll try to eat anything once, but (I know this is sea critter thread) I draw the line at the following:

snakes
scorpions
field mice -- grams says this is Cantonese specialty
dogs/cats --why can't dog meat be mixed with mung bean?
horse
birds nest

but I think that's it...I don't have any problems with sea cucumbers though..

sorry sorta talking to myself there. ma says that mung bean eaten with (or within the same meal as) dog meat will give people deadly case of food poisoning.

I tend to think of birds nest as endangered species. Ever since I heard that Birds Nest is essentially swan "spit" that hardens to house their eggs. People harvest these "nests" for soup leaving the poor swans without a place to lay their eggs. To have a substantial nest or the rare "huet yeen" -- a swan would have to kill itself (hence the blood in the Birds Nest) producing the mucous. So yes its a stupid nest, but it kills the bird, the birds family, and any future birds.

oh so it's not a matter of thinking that it's disgusting? it's really an ethical thing.

Yep, bird's nest purely ethical matter. Snake -- I'm just scared I'll start having bad case of nose bleeding (supposed to be incredibly "yeet hai" hot breath??).

I want to try good quality abalone -- love sliced conch. What is "Peeing Shrimp" ? I hear about it all the time, do the shrimps really pee when you boil them?

hehehh you know i have a british friend in HK who grew up in HK and he used that term "yeet hei". i'm like damn! hahah i don't even use that term. i mean he not only knows what it means but he used it. he was like "no i don't want any, that's yeet hei". hahah!

yeah laai liu hah (peeing shrimp) is really good! best cooked by frying with garlic i think. i thought they were called that because they are really juicy and juice spills out when you cook or eat them? i don't know. but they're reeeaaally good.

I hate sea cucumbers so much. They look funny and taste even worse. I don't eat bird's nest because I can't get over the fact that I'm drinking spit. :gross: :frown:

Sea cucumbers are on the bottom of the food chain. Don't know if I'd find them all that yummy.
