Man shoots girl, thinking she was a wild boar
PEKAN - Mistaking a young girl playing in the family orchard for a wild boar, a man shot her dead. It was his neighbour's 11-year-old daughter.
Pahang police had arrested the 46-year-old, and also seized a shotgun that belonged to the village vigilante corps, Rela, for investigation, said Berita Minggu yesterday.
On Friday, Nurul Atitah Mohamed Salleh was playing in the orchard's bushes when she was shot at close range.
The man who pulled the trigger had walked in the orchard with the girl's father.
The men, who knew the girl was playing nearby, called her name several times after seeing a crouching figure behind a pile of sweet potatoes.
When she did not reply, the neighbour fired his shotgun at what he assumed was a wild boar, hitting Nurul Atitah in the head and killing her instantly, police spokesman Mokhtar Mohamed Ali said.
He said that police had received reports about wild boar terrorising the area. But he urged residents who own firearms to exercise extreme caution in using their weapons.
'They should not be trigger-happy in trying to put down wild animals which rampage their orchard.'
The man was being investigated to ascertain if it was negligence or an accident.
