Most asian girls i've met either don't want to try or feel that they can't do it.
Is this true?

I can do it if my life depended on it or I had to rush somebody to a hospital. But since I've only driven stick like twice in my life, don't count on me to be weaving through city streets. I only know one person who drives stick and was actually willing to let somebody other than herself near the drivers' seat.

my ex gf drove stick. countless friends also. my mom drives stick, so does my aunt and my sister.
to me, i don't think this is a matter of asian women driving stick, i think it's more a matter of women wanting or even being able to drive stick. a lot of guys can't drive stick also, so ... who knows.
i'm not sure that the question you're posing is "fair" since to some extent it can be true, but to some extent it can be also false.
does your girl drive stick ?

well the reason why i brought this up is because my mom, my girl, my sister or any relative women i know can. So i have this stereotype in my mind that barely any asian girl can drive stick. It's not supposed to be offensive. I couldn't fly a plane. But i'm going to learn to ride a bike soon. I envy all you rice rocketeers.

I'm confused. Reread your post. Everybody you know can, but you hold a stereotype that tells you that most girls can't?

I only know 1 woman who can drive stick, although I've tried to teach 3 girls how to drive my car. I think one of them managed to blow out my clutch, so that's not happening anymore.
I'm with tre, its not an asian woman thing, but a female thing in general. Even then, there's lots of guys who can't drive stick. I read somewhere that only 5% of 2002 model year cars were stick.

I think the lack of girls/people who can't drive stick is also pretty related to the fact that there just aren't a lot of manual cars out there for people to have easy access to.

- Audi TT highpressure
- Porsche Gt2
- Lambo Mucielago
- Honda civic Si all yrs

i personally know lots of young asian women who can drive stick, i think asian women although inadept at driving have no less the hand eye cordination of any other women. thus are able to drive stick just as easily, but turning and parking thats another story

I'm not kidding. A majority of MY kinda people (obviously not the racer/rice rocket types)... have never had quick and easy access to a manual car. I know maybe one or two people who drive them... if my family had a car with a stickshift, maybe I'd know how to drive it better, but since they don't (and I don't know too many kids who grew up around stickshift cars) I was never taught to drive in one.
And all those cars you listed aren't exactly on the *affordable* end of the spectrum. ...So don't expect everybody and their mom's to be able to drive stick.
Not everyone drives a souped up import.

when is a honda civic expensive or a prelude, same w/ mustang or used mr2 turbo (6-10k $)
ehows, majority of my friends arent into import cars or racing. its just a sample of a man's group of friends, ahem skilled friends. Stick shift when i went to highschool was pretty common maybe because i came from a poorer area, known as torrance/ gardena, but i remember all my buddies driving stickshift older japanese cars like CRX, 71' datsun 510, 75 'datsun 710, toyota cardina, older camaro's, AE92 corolla's, older 80's preludes... most were stick i think its a guy thing in general, because i rarely see men who cant drive stick. It might also be a country thing because most people in europe drive stick shift cars because of the gasaoline prices and stick shift cars tend to be more fuel efficient.
typical stick shift euro cars
- honda accord hatchback (made in britain model)
- BMW 320i
- Vauxal Saxo
- Peugot 206
- Ford focus (ford britain)
- Ford puma
- Mercedes C240
- Opel Calibra
I think that the ability to drive manual transmission should be a requirement for basic drivers ed, its neither hard nor extremely difficult, just takes sum basic skills and hand eye cordination. It not like ur using a super heavy duty clutch and tranny of a semi truck or full pucked race clutch for daily driving. I personally would never want automatic tranny on a car i could have gotten stick shift (example IS300 i'd rather have 5-speed manual than a 5 speed auto). Its just overtly lazy fat americans who cannot stomach the idea of having to pay attention to shift, who would rather eat or read or do their hair while at the wheel, then take the time and effort to learn the basic opperation of 1/2 the motor vehicles in the world.

i think technology is just getting too good...i mean now theres tiptronic er sportshifters n whatever, sooner or later a machine will do the job of a human better...and when that happens...whose going to want to do anything manually??
but anyway, i like driving stick i refuse to buy an automatic car...the first car i learned on was stick and i didnt stall my first try =)...so HAH!!! ^_^...im absolutely positive i drive better than some guys...and they say asian girls are bad drivers...tell me WHO is getting into all the accidents while racing and whatnot? the asian GUYS! hmph
A machine will never give you the same grin factor as a 5-6 speed short throw close ratio transmission will give you.
Driving in the canyon curves at particulary insane speeds requires liberal use of gears 2-4. To automate that would be an act of blasphemy.

yah, Sequential/SMG technology is great and dandy just other then the martin mag. of the ferrari's and aston martin i havent seen very many mass=produced truely sequential shifting
- auto sick/ short shift/ tiptronic are not true sequential manaul transmissions, but just automatics w/ a lever that allows u go up or down. honda has been having alot tho with their short shift cars preludes, TL, CL w/ that system have been recalled and also have alota transmission problems.
- True SMG/ sequentials are rare
- BMW M3 and Z4 have a 6 speed sequential, but in the early SMg m3 it has been problematic causing overrev damage (lets ur rev to 8900rpm and blows motor)
- toyota Mr2 sypders is pretty simple no problems
- ferrari/ aston martin use martin magnolleli to build sequential gear boxes for them. Ferrari: 355/360, enzo, 575 and Masertati Spyder/ coupe, Aston martin votage all use basically the same MM tranny.
- F1, WRC, and Indy cars use them but thats mostly cuz its easier to use and puts less stress on driver.

Kind of late to this thread but I drive stick shift auto, dirt bike, road bike and even flew a small plane. I can handle up to 1100cc road bike with a large passenger, as long as that passenger is familiar and comfortable with riding motorcycles.
Oh yeah, I'm also forklift certified.

im not saying the machines now are better than humans as far as shifting goes...but shit...its gonna get better and possibly shift faster and better than a human can...

I heard that some of the formula one cars and other various racing/auto-cross cars are autoshift, the thing is, like jai said, it's gotten good enough to shift faster than a human can. The thing is, these cars go VERY fast, so yea... when you're kicking 80+ in the time of 3 secs, then yea... you can't ever shift fast enough. Of course I'm not too keen on details, so things might be a lil' different.

they are sequential basically a stick shift car w/ an automatic clutch pedal, right now there arent too many automatic transmission that can survive racing. also racing sequetial tranny like the Hewland 6-speed, 7-speeds on f1 cars, and 6 speed prodrive tranny have to be rebuilt after every single race. True sequentials are nice but, in usa atleast they dont have launch controll, so u cant get as good acceleration numbers, via reving then duimping the clutch.

People I know don't buy stickshift cars because there's nothing to drive in around here except traffic. And driving stick in traffic is just IRRITATING.

i hate it when the have nots complain to the haves (and in this case skilleD) that the adeptitude of the skilled is sumthing to be ashamed of. Dammit i am proud i have a modicum of hand eye cordination to drive a basic manual transmission vehicle if sumone complains stick shift sucks they can shove it!

Must you bring this up again?
Who gives a shit if the entire world doesn't drive stick?
All I'm saying is that I'm ALREADY too lazy to drive through traffic around Downtown LA, let ALONE drive it in a car with manual transmission. It's not about eye hand coordination. It's about my personal battle with laziness. So stop thinking you're the better than anybody who doesn't drive stick.
