Charges Against Teacher Who Threw Koosh Ball
Wednesday December 18, 2002 10:24pm
Florence (AP) - A jury in Florence will decide what happens to a teacher accused of assault after throwing a Koosh Ball at a student. Nina Morrison, 34, went to court for a bond hearing two weeks ago.
A trial date has not been set.
Morrison, who is in her first year teaching sixth graders with disabilities at Moore Intermediate School, is charged with simple assault and battery after throwing a Koosh Ball onto at a sleeping student.
Morrison says she was trying wake the student. The student's mother is pressing charges.
Florence District One officials say they investigated the matter and decided the teacher did make an error in judgment. They suspended her for one day with pay.
The charge carries a sentence of up to 30 days in jail and a $1000 fine.
The student has been transferred to another class.

A Koosh ball?!? My middle school music teacher threw chairs and stands at students when he got mad. And he still works at the school.
Sometimes I think people in the world are starting to just become total whiners. I often want to grab them and say "SHUT UP AND DEAL WITH IT!"

She taught kids with disabilities, so maybe their parents are a bit more sensitive or maybe the kid had a really bad reaction to getting hit.
We don't know the whole story, but on the surface, it seems like overexuberence by some DA to pursue the charges.

I remember a time when I was in first grade and the white teacher grabbed this young brotha and was forcing crumpled typing paper into his mouth, cause he'd been cussing her out for her telling him to shut up and sit down. He was struggling and she just kept at it. This was in the mid sixties. Boy if that happened today the whole damn school district would've been involved in a lawsuit!

The kid was asleep. I'm assuming she didn't try to KILL the child with a Koosh ball... just tried to wake him up or something. Disabled or not, kids get punished for sleeping in class. You got a disabled kid? Don't you want them to be treated the same? ANd I'm confused. Disabled kids aren't the same as retarded kids, am I correct?

A little ball made out of rubber strings. Even if you get hit really really hard by one, it doesn't hurt at all.

Hey frivilous lawsuits are no longer uncommon unfortunately. There's one girl from Vestavia Hills (an upper-class suburb of Birmingham) that had her daddy sue her high school because she didn't make the cheerleading team for God's sake......
