It surprises me when I read people who happen to work at overseas are constantly complaining about the kind food they are getting isn't what they used to get in wherever they used to live. I mean, just fucking live with it, if you hate it so much, eat something else. If you have so many complains about the country that you are currently working, pack your fucking bags and go back to wherever serves you the best food. What's the point of putting up with so much shit and yet still staying?

 Some of us may not like certain foods, but a new experience, a city, a home, a job, and friends, I think, surpasses food annoyances. It is also never that easy to "pack a bag and go." We're not students. We are people with real jobs, contracts, a lease on apartments, and a life. I don't think any of us chooses a place to begin a life based on food...but I could be wrong with all the foodies on YW! Life is never as simple as you think.

Plus, I think it's fun to hear about all the weird foods and drinks of different places and whether you liked them or not. If you wanted, I suppose you could follow your own train of thought and just not read them, or skip over them? We all come onto rant room for a reason, no? Even you.... :)

And yes I would like some cheese with my food whines because I sure am not getting any real cheese over here in Hong Kong!

It's not bitching.

It's just one of those fun annoyances. You mean you're gonna put that clam on the half shell where? On pizza? HAHHAHAHAHA!

It's silly.

It's just as silly as eating rice with soy sauce and eating a fortune cookie afterwards.

yeah i mean you can't expect everything to be perfect. there's always something you can complain about. if you have nothing to complain about, then you're a monk! and hey, if the food really annoys someone that much to the point that it outweighs everything else, i'm sure he/she would get the hell out of there.

Having worked overseas for awhile myself, I think I know a thing or two about leasing, contracts, jobs...etc. I guess what annoys me is while (I take Australia as an example as I live here) it seems to be wrong for migrants to criticise life in general in a new country that they have moved to, it's ok for foreigners (I use people going to HK from overseas as an example) to go there and do the same? ("shit, food don't taste like this in Aust", "fuck, turn the TV off on the bus, we got human rights, you know", "why do people walk so fast and look so cold???" and the list goes on and on)
I mean, is that one rule for some, one rule for another? If you are going to live there, my theory has always been and still is (and I hope will always be) respect the way how people do things there, whether it's food, people, culture... My saying of packing bags and all that are from my friendly fellow Aussies, didn't mean to offend nobody, may be my fellow Aussies always get up from the wrong side of the bed...

well there's a difference between bitching about absolutely everything and not liking the local foods. i thought you were just talking about food.

and yes i think it's ok for migrants to criticise their new country.

I absolutely think it's okay for migrants to complain about their new country much less something as trivial as food and especially in America since we have something called the Freedom of Speech. My parents who immigrated nearly 25 years ago still harp about how unauthentic the Chinese cuisine is in America. If one person wants to whine about how awful the lo mein is in America, I really don't care because it doesn't affect me and who knows, they might make suggestions to actually make it better. I'm not going to tell them what they should or should not like or to assimilate if they prefer the taste of something else. While yes, one should be respectful in a foreign country, respect does not equal silence. Something as inconsequential as a food complaint is harmless.
