Well since this all started from an attempted penguin shooting...
Let's just see what the general opinion is on operating systems these days.

yeah legacy systems. IBM sold them on OS/2 and then Windows came out shortly after that. this was when Microsoft completed their overshadow of IBM. now those companies and gov agencies are stuck with OS/2 unless they spend lots of money switching to Windows. poor bastards.

believe it or not, alot of CS majors like Macs. especially now because OSX is actually running unix underneath. and while i haven't done any MacOS programming (well i've seen a friend do it), i've heard that it's really cool.

sadly I forgot to put Solaris down as one of the choices until too late
anyways
for those of you who use BeOS and the BSD family I'd like to ask you about your experience with such systems
and from the other poll, I noticed one Solaris user so I hope you'd give some feedback as well on your OS

I'm the one who voted BeOS, I like it cause the interface is a lot more slick and clean, and plus I'm a minimalist. It also had great multimedia performance and a journaling file system...

I like Macs. Graphics Galore. OOOH.

I was the one that choose FreeBSD. I mainly picked it because of superior OS performance and stability. Plus, you can run almost everything you can run in Linux on FreeBSD. Applications are another issue, but that's not the OS.
Edit: Forgot to mention price as an issue also.

I'm a huge mac fan too. I just got the 14 inch ibook and I love it. The OSX is fantastic, the interface on this thing is so sweet!

i like apple's hardware like the cinema screens, and their lappys look nice.
BUT i have long ago swore off any kind of mac and mac os. their dvd-r discs are also the best quality and have no degradation like those cheapy ones do.
macs suck, but apple has SOME products *cough*ipod*cough*24"applecinemadisplay*cough* that i'd like.
