honestly? no. i've learned to accept that there are stereotypical people out there whether it be for business of mere pleasure. so no i wasn't offended.

Didn't want to hijack your questions/answers thread so I moved this portion of it.
Regarding your last comment -- I don't want to be the person who tries to compel your conscious (since most of the time, I'm unconscionable)...

It's one thing to acknowledge the existence of stereotypes and be frustrated by our apparent inability to do anything about them, but isn't it entirely something else to aid in propogating those stereotypes?

what do stereotypical people have to do with people that stereotype?
might as well point out all aspects of ignorance where it exists, eh?

Whoa, sorry to hear that. I won't comment too much further on this, since you've got much more important matters to attend to, but in regards to racism and just sitting there and taking it -- you don't have to. Simple.
If an acquaintance of mine is talkin' shit behind my back, I'm not going to support our relationship by continuing to hang out with this person -- why would I? I've got other friends! So why would I support a company that does the same?

Wow..sad.
Its strange because Eugene who is from maxazn.com, a mod there and the person who was giving me a hard time told me that atlanta asians never face racism..what a bs. Is he even asian to say that? We asians get picked on everyday with racial slurs and yet, hes there telling me its all cool and never happen.....he needs to wake up and smell the coffee there.

randomly popping in.....
my opinion? i was more concerned not because i was offended, but because of the message that was being sent to non-asians -- that its okay to support such degrading depictions of asians.

i agree. it had not so much to do with the shirts themselves, but more the fact that the white community persisted in attempting to justify the shirts even after so many asians informed them that they thought it was racist.
there's a fine line between ignorance and racism. but if you're ignorant as to what's offensive, and then [i:0afeec6bf1]told[/i:0afeec6bf1] that something is offensive but yet choose to continue to be ignorant with regards to it, that's when you become racist.

well definitions such as that are all a matter of perspective.
tend to think of racism as being more of an active choice grounded on stubborness

can you draw out the distinction a little more?
princess

well ignorance is simply not knowing something. racism, as u defined it, was choosing to be ignorant even when knowing the truth. or at least thats what i got from it. one cant be ignorant of something which they are aware of. racism is actively choosing to hold a unfavorable view of a particular group of people. its choosing to stubbornly hold on to this view. bottom line: its a choice. ignorance is not.

Then maybe we need to redefine "what is racist" and "who is a racist"...because I think there's a bit of a dilemma when you make such definitions contingent on who is defining them, e.g., "You are a racist because people of color say you are."

well, i see what you're saying.
but the dilemma ceases to exist when you think of morality in terms of cultural relativity. know what i mean?
achtungbaby
06-26-2002, 02:44 PM
But that's what makes me feel uncomfortable sometimes -- the "righteousness" of cultural relativity.
Then again, at the same time, I get so annoyed when I hear non-Asians talk about this "universal existence" and how we're all human, and how love is colorblind...
