In my best Cantonese ping yum(with cloasest translation in parenthesis):
zi do hai yiou ma ma ho (I know that mother is good).... and I forget all of the other words
this was one of my favs too :(
can somebody tell me what the rest of this is
Ask your parents/grandparents etc. if you need to
and another one in Mandarin ping ying:
shiao ah shiao er nah (Little little child)...
bei shang de shu bao shang zie tang (carries a bookbag to school)
bu pa tai yang shai (not afraid of the shining sun)...and I forget from there
the next line is supposed to translate roughly to "but afraid of the teacher's scoldings" or something like that
but I do know the ping ying for part of the hook the hook:
Lun li ga lun li ga lung ga li ga lung
but i have no idea what it means
help me out peeps
and if anyone has any other folk songs or fairy tales/folk stories to add and translate please feel free
I'll be asking my mother for some as soon as Christmas break rolls around for me

eh... when i think of folk songs i tend to think of songs that are sung by people of a certain locality and nobody else.
anyway, moving to A&E...

well wait those are folk songs then if by that definition
they are of a certain locality to my knowledge unless you can prove me wrong (which I very well may be)

aren't those songs pretty much known by all of the general chinese populace? at least that's what i thought. i could be wrong.

dude, even iris knows those songs, and she's ABC....
but whatever man. it's moot. call them folk songs if you like.
perhaps you should watch Chen Kaige's Yellow Earth. there are some folk songs in that film.

zi do hai yiou ma ma ho
Uhm, I think anyone that has been near a radio on Mother's Day has heard this song, country bumpkin or not. It's like Hacken's "houn yut..."
Anyhow, I agree with SWK though, when I think of fold songs, I think of mountain courting songs from different locals..
