Well for those of you who are fans of this musical like I am, you may have heard about the end for this classic. Sad to say it is doing its final showing next March on the 15th. What's worse is that I have never seen it live and in person before, so I am desperate to find a way to get to a showing before they go. Anyways. This topic is for anyone who would like to say farewell to this well loved Broadway musical and for anyone who has anything positive to say about Les Misérables. Adieu, adieu. Vivé Les Misérables!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hopefully it will come back one day to dazzle the world again.

Les Misérables is produced by Cameron Mackintosh, who also produced Miss Saigon. He's the producer who refused to even consider casting an Asian actor in the musical's Asian male lead. He was the one who said that Asian American actors aren't good enough to play starring roles on Broadway. I hope he'll do us all a favor and just stay in Britain, and he can take his bombastic shows with him.

Les Mis is alright, but it's not OMG AMAZING in my opinion. Has it lasted longer than Cats by now?

yeah broadway musicals don't really appeal to me.
too much dancing and singing.. not enough acting.
i actually like the small off off broadway productions.

bah... go see les miz... i only saw it once when it made it to Toronto, but it is SOOOO worth it. I was a Phantom obsessee until I saw Les Miz. Miz is soooo much better... it might be worth a trip to ny.
I think Cats still holds the record. You'd think Andrew Lloyd Webber and T.S. Eliot combined would produce something better than the utter crap that was Cats. I have no idea why the commercials kept pitching it as kids' entertainment. If there is a child out there under the age of 12 that understood it, I want to meet him or her. The Lion King would be a better introduction to musicals for kids.
As for Les Mis... yeah, I'm not too fond of it either. Not too sorry to see it go. Give me Starlight Express any day.

Wasn't A Chorus Line the longest running broadway show?

Musical theater needs a good gasoline colonic.
Les Mis has been around too long. Let another play with something new to bring to the table takes its place.

Why WAS cats so heralded? I was so disappointed in that musical when i saw it... i love the music and the costumes, but there was practically no story (or maybe i just didn't understand it).

I don't know but when the actors and actresses were on the street in costume promoting it back in the day. The cat outfits on them actresses was a definite turn on!

Longest Running Broadway Shows (http://www.geocities.com/auzziek/broadway_list.html) says:
1. Cats - 7,485
2. Les Miserables*- 6,496
3. The Phantom of the Opera*- 6,199
4. A Chorus Line - 6,137

You're right... there is no story. It's just a bunch of cats in a junkyard and they tell the audience about themselves through songs. At the end is the Jellicle Ball where the cats dance under the full moon and one of them goes to cat heaven (the one that sings Memory). I remember the smoke used for the raised platform smelling pretty stinky. I hope they at least switched to a nicer scent afterwards.
I really don't know why it was so popular. I don't think it was all that heralded... many theater people I know are bitterly divided. It seems they either love it or hate it. Maybe Betty Buckley being in the original cast helped? Aggressive marketing (as mentioned by CB) to the right audience was probably a major factor. I remember the theater being filled with a lot of kids.

ism, you're very resourceful!
I absolutely love Les Mis. I saw it on Broadway and in Paris. You should definitely go BL.
Though the play is not my favorite, the songs certainly are. :)
