Hrmm well this applies to any gift-giving occasion but basically keep your ears open for gift ideas all year long. Her saying something like "I could really use..." is the equivelant of a 2x4 (and something she may actually would NOT really use), but needs and wants not neccessarily voiced so explicitly I think are better to fulfill. I know it's tough to be always on the lookout for clues but around October/November you can start to turn on the radar system, since they could be intentionally dropping clues. Unfortunately this requires you to know the person at least moderately well, so if it's a relatively new relationship you'll probably have to fall back on bath stuff/candles/jewelry/Amazon wish list. And yeah, personal, handwritten cards are a neccessity.

exactly what i've been hearing her complain about but overboard.
1. discman...mine died on her, and she's been wishing ever since for one of her own.
2. no more lazy computer. she's been choking her celeron 550 compaq to death now that she's moving into power user status after messing with my dually. now she gets a dually of her own. also a new monitor as she likes my 22" too much as she has a 15" x_X
3. as usual, me cookin huge christmas dinner that is way too much for us; duck, ham, stuffing, yams, etc. list goes on and on.
and then i get slammed by her b-day not too far down the road. i'm probably gonna end up paying her tuition for a qtr and a night out since she's been hurting for money. she's been saying how she's gonna have to drop out for spring qtr since she can't afford it (i can afford mine and hers, but my summer rent and fall rent money is going byebye. time to get another job.)
and YES she gets cards. hell i give her cards and poetry/flowers throughout the year anyway.

i enjoy money when i have it. if i scrimp and save all the time, i feel miserly. might as well enjoy it as long as you have it...and being two college students, we don't have it that often.
as for her comp, it's only like $300+, now throw in a new case and monitor, about $460ish. her's has some pretty kickin stuff for being that cheap. it's all about snatching up the sales at the right places. i put mine together for $700 and it should have cost me closer to $1200, but then again, mine is uberiffic dually superiority. now if i can just pac bell to start my fricken service for dsl. this is the second month where it's not up yet. however, they haven't forgotten to charge me each month, fuggers.
as for her tuition, i'm just now getting my financial aid for fall qtr when i should have got it at the beginning, rather then now (the end). so i have a surplus being built up at the moment.

Let's see.. This Christmas I haven't decided yet.... A nice card, and she mentioned she wanted a custom CD.. Thing is, my girl is across the US from me right now in SF.. And I don't even know if I'll get to see her for Christmas.. :cry: I think the best gift I could get her would be to surprise her by showing up in SF, but I don't think I can!!! However, there is hope she'll be coming to SC soon.... Oh well, I miss her, and this has become a weird rant, sorry. :)

YW is not a Wylin clone factory.
Once I got a bar of ivory soap and stuck all these colored thumbtacks into it and called it an air freshener.
Another time I got a plain ol' rock and colored it with a silver metallic paint pen and called it an ornamental paper weight.
And once, my brother got a piece of paper, drew all these godawful pictograms and shapes in orange felt-tipped pen and then scotch-taped all these nickels and pennies onto it. I'm not sure what the hell that was.
These were all gifts we gave to our parents at one point or another (I think I was around 19...j/k) but I imagine a significant other would appreciate them much the same.=)
