not much graphic design, because it's not software that is built for consumers, only people that have a need to use it. but there's plenty of web design. in fact i have to work with the group that does the web design.

you're graduating this year?

I'm not unemployed, but I am looking for a job in the IT industry. Can anyone help me out? I'm always eager to learn and adapt to the current business environment. =) In the past, I've interned for a network administrator at an ABC-affiliated television station here in St. Louis. I'm also interested in any work related to psychology. I currently do applied behavioral analysis (ABA) therapy with children who have autism. Secondly, I've worked with adolescents as a support staff at an adolescent suicide hotline, and I've interacted with many adults at a national and local suicide hotline geared towards every age range.

theoretically this makes a lot of sense. but i think it's pointless unless you actually call them up/email them. 2 out of the 3 professional jobs i got, i got them because an alumni of my school worked there and my resume caught their eyes because of the school. the other one i got when i was actually not mass sending out resumes.

When Chris said "pinned", he was just telling the other moderators and admins to keep this thread in the top section. Just copy and paste your resume into the box, make sure to preview it before you post.

Hey, if anyone wants to work in China feel free to PM me. I've been working in Executive Search (Recruitment, "Headhunting," etc) out here for a year and a half now. Currently I manage the research side of the company so I have a pretty decent idea of the job markets out here, particularly in the FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) and the Manufacturing (not very exciting, I know) Industries. Our company dabbles a bit in the tech-sector but not so much because that's a real tough market and there are other firms here that specialize in tech-searches.

Also, if anyone wants resume-writing tips or would like me to quickly proofread a resume, I read and screen resumes every day as part of my job. Feel free to PM me and I can send you my work e-mail. I'm warning you though I can be harsh and really nit-picky when it comes to resumes, it's only because I've seen SO MANY crappy resumes in the year and a half I've worked here.. and if I can get annoyed over something little, you can bet your ass an HR Manager will too.

well if you're willing to work for some secret government organisations in DC, you'd get to work in one of those cool unmarked buildings in the city. it's kind of funny, some of these buildings have no names, and you can't see through their windows, and they just happen to have these metal bars sticking up out of the ground in front of their front doors (it's to prevent someone from ramming a car through the front door).

yes the special agent program.

you don't have to work in DC. you do go to virginia for training, but you work in field offices all over the country. there is a huge office here in NYC with lots of sgents. my recruiter said that once accepted, you can ask for your base city, which you will probably get, but will have a hard time switching from. we need feds everywhere.

TB, so would you say you're a sys admin type of guy? it seems you've had a wide variety of responsibilities.

you might consider putting sort of a summary section at the top of your resume that's basically a bunch of buzz words related to the skills you have. a lot of HR people and recruiters don't have a real technical background and they're just eyeing resumes for key words when they're initially scanning through a resume.

most of the rhetoric out there says to make your resume accomplishment-oriented, which helps to re-word your duties more into what can be specifically offered to an employer. also, "responsible for" is superfluous.

Jesus, everyone else's resumes look so much more impressive than mine. Now I don't even know if I should post it, my resume seems like crap compared to everyone else's. How did you guys get so much stuff to put on there? BTW, I submitted my resume to one insurance company for their actuarial summer intern program and got rejected. Now I know why. Hey, if anyone is experienced with resume can you pm me your email so I can send you my resume privately and you can comment on it?

Ah this is depressing. I hate applying for things and going through the routine. I like more informal interactions like going to a prof's office hours and having a chat about joining his/her research group. It's so much more relaxed and you get to present your case in person.

you can still do that. just ask an employer you want to meet for an informational interview for insight in the career in question.

John, some suggestions:
1) get rid of the objective section
2) put the experience section above the education section

I agree with taking out the objective line. That's what a cover letter is for.

I disagree with putting the experience above the education. You're still in school, so you should be emphasizing that. For people changing jobs mid-career, you put your experience first, but for students put your education first.

thx for all the help guys. i put the objective there because im targeting specific jobs but i guess the cover letter should address this even more.

i'm pretty sure a B.A. aint gonna cut it for most of the jobs im targeting and I honestly don't feel like doing something that I don't like just to make some money. instead i still want to learn.

in a few months i'm going to be a 21 year old with a college degree. gee thats kinda of scary!

You may want to emphasise the more web design oriented projects you did at the radio station as you want to lead the interviewers into those areas that show you have good and relevant experience.

I'm not sure how CVs are suppose to be, but instead of that abstract image, replace it with a picture of yourself?

There are a lot of rivers when you use justification alignment.
Maybe you can try using left justification, or mess with some kerning (space between letters) just slightly to make it look more balanced.

Also the spaces between the columns seem to be changing from section to section. Make them all uniform.

You spelt "Nationality" wrong.
Is mentioning something like "clean driving license" popular in Britain?

CV's are more for professional things or if your employer requests it from my experience. It's more bibliographic if anything, but you should also list, specifically publications or phamphelts you've worked on.

edit: I wanted to add that I like the layout, but aren't CV's like REALLY detailed? perhaps link to things you've done and cite pamphlets you've done. I think there's a way to cite pamphlets.

It's arguable to have a picture of me instead of an abstract image but if you are going to go into the design industry, you do need something unique which makes you stand out from the rest and a picture of yourself doesn't really do as much justice compared to a graphic that portrays you.

Yeh, I've been meaning to re-align the margins and alignment of the text - thanks for reminding me there.

Yes, saying that you have a clean driving license does play apart. For example, if you need to go offsite, that's when you need to know how to drive and the company would even give you a company car to use. Also, I was told by a friend of mine that in the business industry (in general), without it you will not be able to get up the ladder to become director, or other senior roles.

edit: I wanted to add that I like the layout, but aren't CV's like REALLY detailed? perhaps link to things you've done and cite pamphlets you've done. I think there's a way to cite pamphlets.

Not necessary... It depends how you structure the CV. Your CV is basically tailored to the job, or industry, that you desired for. Putting things that are not related to the job really wastes space on the page - my previous CV was basically like that, i.e. too generic.

One of the basic structural layout in a CV would something like this:

Profile
Bio
Education
Experience
Key Skills / Personal Skills
Interests & Achievements
Reference

The general rule of thumb for a CV is to not have it more than 2 pages of A4. Therefore, to fit all of those in, you would have to be very good in how much details you write and yet make the readers be interested in you. Personally, I eliminate Key Skills and merge bio and profile together. The reason for my decision is basically, by writing what you did at work or your interest, you are pretty much showing what your key skills / personal skills are.

Most of the company that will look at your CV, tends to scan, hence I made mine very specific and straight to the point, unless you are going for a very literary role, then you need to flaunt your English skill.

The trouble about putting links into my CV is that it hogs up quite a lot of space and with my layout, it wouldn't look very nice. However, in most design jobs that I have applied for, they tend to ask you to email them some links which you worked on, along with the attachment of your work.

Maybe I'm an old fashioned, stick to the basics, kind of guy but I would rely on a portfolio to do that.

the cv is essentially a more detailed resume.

the cv allows one to go into greater detail of awards, publications, projects, honors, memberships etc etc and can span several pages than a resume which ideally supposed to be one page. my great accomplishments in medicine and medical research cannot be fit in one stinking page.

the cv is preferred in academic and research positions whereas the resume is preferred in the business world.

this is all according to the people running a workshop we had to attend in med school when we were applying for summer research positions and clinical clerkships.

That's quite interesting to read - over in UK, we just call it a CV when you're applying for any positions, both job or academic. But I know that for academic you can just about go more than 2 pages whereas in the working industry, you shouldn't really have more than 2.

i use a curriculum vitae. but, i have two versions of it: an abridged version and the full version. some of the big potatoes want the whole deal starting from college till now. it's 4 pages. the others just want to know what i've been doing starting from residency till now. it's 2 pages.

i also had a one page resume too. but, i haven't updated it or used it in ages.

I'm having a bit of trouble updating a section of my resume.

The section is labelled "Computer Skills"
Subsections are Software, Operating Systems, Languanges, Protocols.

I'm looking for a way to squeeze in another subsection that tells the person I am security concious, use design patterns, and so on. How would I fit this in?

If you are commenting on things like security and usage of design patterns, isn't that much easier to fit in by rewording your past job duties/project descriptions ? Otherwise it would look extremely awkward.

Personally, I think 'protocols' looks weird as a subsection. I used to work as a network programmer, and perhaps that clouds my thinking. I don't really see it in the same light as 'operating systems', which I think is fairly stupid but it gets you past the HR and recruiting filters, plus the not so bright 'potential co-workers'.

Also, watch out for typos.
