Not sure if this is in the right forum, but as I'm specifically seeking advice from women I thought it would be the right place.

Okay well, here's the story. There's this girl I met two weeks ago at a ball; I fell for her almost instantly and about a week later she confessed that she was interested in me and wanted to get to know me better. Trouble is right after I met her I relocated to London for a 3 month work experience - so now she's 2 hours away by train and I haven't had much of a chance to see her.

This weekend I'm going back to visit my friends and I requested to have Friday off so that I could take her out on a date (it's the only day that she's free). I would really like to get a small gift for her... not chocolates or flowers because I think it's a bit of a cop-out, and not clothes or jewelry because it isn't really appropriate, not at this stage anyway.

So what kinds of things would you YWers suggest? I've got a few ideas at the moment but I thought it'd be better to ask around before making a firm decision. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

An 8x10 autographed photo of yourself.

Tell us a bit about her. What does she like, her hobbies, etc. Alternately, what does she remind you of? Like ponies or rainbows or butterflies?

how can we suggest anything specific when you gave us nothing to work with? it's like handing us some wooden sticks and glue and telling us to build a working car.

One being an oyster card, which is the electronic smartcard used on the metro and buses in London. She once told me jokingly that she'd love to steal mine and act like a Londoner so that's the logic behind it.

The second is a small bag of brazil nut toffee from Harrods; she loves sweet things and she's Brazilian so it seemed to make perfect sense. Also she studies English Lit so I thought she'd appreciate the word association.

By the way what's DIB?

i think most importantly, if you want to give her something, make sure you're doing it just because you want to, not because you're trying to win her over or something.

it's never about what you do for her, it's almost always about what kind of a guy you are.

i would appreciate tiny gifts like that much more than the usual cliche flowers and chocolates, or big-ticket items like purses, etc. the small gifts show you actually listened to and remembered what she said, instead of gawking at her boobs or ass. flowers and chocolates say "i'm unoriginal." or "i'm a teenage boy who wants some ass."
big items scream "i'm an asshole. i have money. be impressed. now you owe me."

yes. it IS true. girls are complicated.

I am sure every guy has date at least one girl who said exactly what you did but then the girl did the opposite. I know I have. I have heard 'Where are flowers and Godiva? You never sent me flowers or choolates anymore. You never buy me anything of value' too many times. Everytime I would respond 'You SAID you didn't want them.' Then the whole thing became 'I don't listen to her and I don't understand her needs' bit.

i think most importantly, if you want to give her something, make sure you're doing it just because you want to, not because you're trying to win her over or something.

That is why I also believe in what SWK said.

yes. it IS true. girls are complicated.

And that's why girls are so interesting.

well there's a difference between girls who only wants guys to buy them things versus girls who actually have guys that buy them things.

Nothing porno because I make him get it for free off the internet. I wish there was a magazine that combined softcore porn and tai chi then I'd have the perfect present for FIL.
