Most Asian-American men got short hair. My hair style/ lenght is similar to Yul Kwon. How can I get hair like Jack Yang.

As AngryABC so shrewdly coined the term you have to ask if you really want F4 hair when it's halfway through 2008.
edit: but please feel free to put up all the pics of guys you want.
edit2: but not the last two.
Cept for the first one. Best looking group of Asian she-males ever!
How are they "she-males" - just b/c they are sporting longish hair?
Since Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Mel Gibson and Antonio Banderas (who sported hair just like Kaneshiro, btw) all had longish-hair at one time or another - I guess that makes them "she-males" as well.
Kaneshiro and Yang definitely have masculine facial features (what style of hair they opt for is basically irrelvant).
As for BYJ - since I'm not a Japanese housewife, I don't get his Harry Potterish-appeal - but he did change his image and went all buff (I'm in top-notch shape and even I was impressed at his muscle-tone).

Brad Pitt would make a good looking she-male. Though I haven't seen what they look like in years and what they look like now, Clooney, Gibson, Banderas probably not.
How do you know all this stuff and what hairstyles these actors sport and have sported? Do you read Tiger Beat and Asian Tiger Beat on the regular?
edit2: but not the last two.
Those last two really look like chicks. The one in the black suit looks like my mom's best friend and the one in the white suit looks like my cousin's dyke lover.

What kind of tips would you need on growing it long ?
Something along the lines of, don't cut your hair for about a year ?
I thought stuff like gel & hairspray were mainly for short hair.

Grow it long and get it styled?
Of course it depends on how your hair is. I would never let my hair grow long otherwise it would just become an Asian fro.

There's that awkward in-between Asian fro stage because Asian hair is usually thicker and more coarse, but after it grows out a bit more it shouldn't be too hard with the right amount of gel or styling to get rid of the effect.

Exactly why I cant grow my hair long to look like a HK superstar as I would like to. My hair isnt the kind of hair that is suitable for that kind of hairstyling.
So I gotta keep it short. No not like a crew cut but I can grow it too long.
Napoleon Chynamite

Well but after the hair grows past that stage (i.e. longer, to "HK superstar" lengths), you won't have that problem anymore.

You need to get your hair thinned out and tapered a bit. It's done one of two ways: razor or scissors. Most people use a razor, some can do it with scissors. The best way I've experienced haircut wise is with scissors but it's a bit painful because of the tugging. If you don't get your hair layered, thinned out and the ends tapered it gets blocky and weighed down or you get the poofy, uncontrolled grow out.

I mean now my hair is short and got the same lenght/ texture like Yul Kwon's hair. If I grow my hair long it's gonna look fugly, like hair "pointing upward" instead of "falling down" like Takeshi, Bae or Jack Yang. I wanna grow them nice locks.

Thats what I'm saying. Like when you cut your hair short and put some gel in , you get something like Yul Kwon or you can grow it abit longer and shave the sides and you get something like edison chen.

What I want is something like this.

The problem is if you got short hair and you grow it, you get something like this for the first few weeks/ months. Some kind of 'Fro. is that normal?? Pic 1 (my starting point) becomes something like pic 2 which will become something like pic 3.

So basically my best bet is
- Grow my hair for 3-6 months
- go to the best chinese/ korean hairsaloon, show them a pic of jack yang/ takeshi kaneshiro, like what style I wanna achieve, go there for maintance cuts/ treatment and ask them to cut it this style???
- Shit I been to a "white" hair saloon, black barber, who gives awesome fades btw, but they cant cut straight hair. Everytime I cut my hair they fuck it up.

Get a Japanese straight perm. Those things last FOREVER and they really work, and they will keep your hair straight for about a year or so.
I would get one, but I like the weird amalgamation of hair I have now.

That's true. But just because hair is straight doesn't mean it's neat and shiny.
i can't read japanese, but these (http://b2c.co.jp/sakuhin/mens/index.htm.htm) are guys' haircuts.
this is what long wispy hair looks like on REGULAR guys. please don't compare yourself to takeshi or anyone famous, because there's a reason they are there and you are here. kthxbye.

Most Asian salons have books on hand. Arrive 10-15 minutes early, enjoy a cup of tea that's almost universally on hand and pick from the books. You'll prolly have to search through a bit more for a boy cut since most of the mags are for girls but try to find 2-3.
As eos said, don't bother bringing in a picture of Takeshi. First, you're not ever going to look like him I don't care who's cutting your hair. Second, most of his ads won't give hairdressers the angles they need.
Decide ahead of time if you're gonna highlight it, too. Instead of waiting for the growout phase, I'd recommend finding a hairdresser you can deal with and plan it out with him or her. Don't go back and forth between a Western and Asian salon. The techniques are very different. Try to stick with the same person. When they only have like 60 seconds to decode what you want it's a bit much to ask for a long term plan unless you convey what you want and give them a chance to work with you.
edited to add one of my much used stylebook
This won't do a guy much good but here's an example of the angles I was talking about. I use kakimoto arms (http://www.kakimoto-arms.com/mc004_hairstylebook/index_bn_2007_w.html) quite a bit. It provides multi-angle pics of the cut you can mouseover and a little verbiage. I usually print it out and bring it with me but also spend about 10 minutes before an appointment looking through the mags they have. When you're investing like half a year growing out your hair it's worth a little pre-cut time investment.
I would get one, but I like the weird amalgamation of hair I have now.
I tell you you must be the bee's knees amongst the kids in Japan right now. I thumbed through a young adult style guide and it was like all blasian wannabe 'dos.

I brought in a pic of some random kpop star with a pretty neutral-looking layered cut to this one korean place and the woman's been cutting my hair the same way every time since for like 5 years. She basically does what Kimpossible described, cutting my hair into layers so it doesn't poof out to the sides.

Just make sure you have the face (and style) to match whatever cut you're getting.

Yeah, but it WILL get rid of the asian 'fro. Guaranteed. The hair will lay down real nice. Plus it will be all shiny and easily manageable.

There's that awkward in-between Asian fro stage because Asian hair is usually thicker and more coarse, but after it grows out a bit more it shouldn't be too hard with the right amount of gel or styling to get rid of the effect. That's the thing - I can never wait long enough for my hair to start falling downwards rather than sticking straight out. The best solution I've found for this is to have the sides and back of my hair cut short while the top is left pretty long. Works great with gel too.
- Shit I been to a "white" hair saloon, black barber, who gives awesome fades btw, but they cant cut straight hair. Everytime I cut my hair they fuck it up.Have you tried an Italian hair saloon? I've been going to one for the past couple months and they do wonders... it's like they know exactly how to cut my hair. They even gave me tips on styling it.

LOL. Good idea. My hair is naturally curly too and I have to use tons of gel to get it straight if I want to look *anywhere near* like a HK superstar or something.
Maybe I'll take a chance and try that one day. And put in a hair color too.

I should interject that only ridiculously ridiculously good-looking men can pull of this hairdo. Unless you look like Takeshi Kaneshiro or Wang Leehom, you'll just look like a mainly girl with a bad haircut.

I've seen pics in rap magazines with Snoop Dogg (http://www.the411online.com/snoop.jpg) with the straight long hair look at times. I wouldn't be suprized if he gets Japanese perms for that effect.

Most Asian-American men got short hair. My hair style/ lenght is similar to Yul Kwon.
And that's pretty much how my hair looks like, if I work it with gel. I got weird hair. If I grow it long (Did it before years ago) it becomes curly but if I keep it relatively short then I can work it and get the effect that Yul Kwon has with his hair.

Another thing to consider when choosing hairstyles is temple balding and a receding hairline. Most of those models (especially the Japanese guys) don't have that, but a lot of Asian guys do.

at Asian hair places (as in places that cater to Asian clientelle), they usually have the scissors that thin your hair. one of the blades on these scissors look like a comb. i think they're called thinning shears. they're must-have for styling Asian hair. my father had one to cut my hair with when i was little.
i suspect this is why non-Asian hair places never quite do as good a job with shorter Asian hair. granted i've only ever gone to cheap-ass places, but they never use thinning shears.
(these days i just razor-cut my hair. number 2 on the top and number 1 on the side. so easy to manage.)
