America is a nation addicted to caffeine, but in this economic climate, many are drinking less lattes, brewing their own coffees, or stopped consuming coffee all together.

If the idea of chugging gas-station coffee instead of your usual nonfat grande honey latte with extra foam sounds like a nightmare, pity Robert Menna, who said he was going to try to cut out coffee entirely.

"It's such a bad habit," Menna said outside a Coffee Bean in Larchmont Village. "It's one of those hidden expenses you don't want to admit."

I just had a conversation with my friend about this. I told her I can't save money on gasoline but I can stop buying Starbucks coffee. I love my Dunkin Donuts coffee. I brewed one at home the other day and it was awesome.

I'm not a coffee drinker, but I was thinking of cutting back on the transportation cost by possibly getting a motorcycle ...

Forget a slumping economy, I've been banned from coffee thanks to a herbalist in Singapore.

I never drank coffee to begin with.

I'm perfectly happy with the coffee our office provides for free. Coffee snobs walk across the street to the Starbucks, but I've always been too cheap to pay for something I can get for free as long as it doesn't taste like garbage.

The hell with coffee. When I wake up in the morning I feast on breakfast with a ice cold beer.

This is why I'm a fan of tea. I can get a big can of tea for the price of four lattes that'll last for months and a box of teabags for the price of one latte.

The price starbucks charges for drinks is highway robbery.

It's such a bitch to make coffee though. Especially the cleaning part.
I'm not a big coffee person but during finals I used to get beans from a local spice shop but not because of cost. I'm elitist and Starbucks is not good enough for me. I need a fresh light roast from a French press. When I was living with my parents I used to roast my own beans but I don't consume enough by myself to justify that practice anymore.

Go with the Razor scooter instead! If I wanted those break necking speeds, I'd just go with the local mass transit. Actually, it probably would be faster than certain mass transit systems (Santa Clara county VTA, etc. but at least back then work was paying for my transit pass and I could read on the bus / lightrail / and while waiting at the stops).

However, realistically I might consider a scooter, as it would be doable with only a slightly modified commute for my current job; Have to factor in likely future transit needs also (in other metros).

I actually don't miss my car any more, after a couple of months of taking MUNI again. It's gotten better over the years, the people on the other hand....well, it's San Francisco. And I still live here, so there's a consistent negative. =P

I just plug in my MP3 player/Camera Phone and tune out the world like I do in the car.

I BRIEFLY contemplated getting some Starbucks coffee today. Til I realized, I'd be spending more on my coffee than on my lunch today. I'd rather be sleepy til lunch than, be awake and hungry.

I read the LATimes all the time, but this is such a stupid article. When I first read the article in the paper, I just rolled my eyes.

Starbucks was already struggling before the economic downturn. And, if you look back at other economic downturns, Starbucks actually did well. Consumers couldn't splurge thousands of dollars, but American consumers are still going to indulge on something and they splurged on something like Starbucks, treating it as an affordable luxury.

This Cardinal prefers tea over coffee. Most coffee is overpriced and overrated.
Recommend two S/F Bay Area tea places: redblossomtea (http://www.redblossomtea.com/) and teance (http://www.teance.com).

I'm pretty sure the vast majority of people that can't get through each day without their daily 10 bucks worth of lattes/coffee already know that it's overpriced, but apparently not overpriced enough to be expendable.
