Hey, 11strikes here. I'm a 2nd gen Chinese-Taiwanese American from Waukegan, IL --forty-minutes north of Chicago. My city is mostly Hispanic and Black, with the 1-2% Asian population being mostly Filipino. Pretty much I could count all the Chinese kids I ever knew in high school on one hand. But I grew up in a Chinese church, so I pretty much only ever really got close to other Chinese people (besides my Filipino friends). Except for one or two Indian kids, never met any other kind of Asian person until college.
Where I’m coming from:
I think it's true that class separates people more than race.
Making close friends with other Asians comes more naturally for me than being close to non-Asians.
I suspect that one of the reasons there is no major Asian-American musical artist is because people just wouldn't know how to market him/her. [Just a thought! Don't flame me, it's just an intro... I can elaborate.]
Looking forward to some good threads.
