i'm not sure if we covered this or not, but my dad just told me about this site and i wanted to share it with you all.

hoi fahn lah! (openrice.com)

literally, it means "open rice" in cantonese, which means, "let's eat!"

it is dedicated to all the yummy food finds in hong kong. this is my dad's tastespotting (tastespotting.com), which is *my* favorite foodie site.

when i go back to hk, i will definitely have a list of things i want to eat when i get there. god...so little time, so many things to EAT!!!!!

I just like surfing for recipes for certain foods when I get a hankering and wagering with friends whether my "concoctions" (my attempts at doing the recipes) are up to snuff or not. I don't always follow the recipes to the dot, but adapt as I taste through the whole process.

I'm batting 14/18 attempts so far, but I'm usually so BLAH'd out after the final dishes, and tasting of the cooking during the whole process, I don't want to eat that dish for a long while.

So far, I make a mean Shanghai Style Chow Mein, and my wonton/dumplings and Grandma's meatballs and pasta sauce are requested more often than I have time for.

Plz post more food sites. I need more incentive to work out and being able to gorge myself. =P

No, I haven't. =( I haven't even finished all my reviews for restaurants I'm gonna throw on Yelp when I have internet access from home again. =(

icebox cake. Yum.

Here's a recipe I found:

Adapted from The Magnolia Bakery Cookbook (Simon & Schuster)

"The one dessert I have great memories of us [my mom and I] making together is the chocolate wafer icebox cake—the same one that we serve at the bakery today. Apparently, while the rest of the country was slaving away shaping Nabisco chocolate wafers into the log that was pictured on the side of the box, we were using chocolate snap cookies to make a really simple yet really delicious round icebox cake." —Allysa Torey

INGREDIENTS
3 cups heavy cream
3 Tablespoons sugar
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
2 (9-ounce) packages chocolate wafer cookies
Unsweetened cocoa powder

In a large bowl, beat cream, sugar and vanilla with an electric mixer on high speed until soft peaks form.

On a flat serving plate, arrange 7 cookies side by side in a circle, keeping 1 cookie in the center.

Spread with 1/2 cup whipped cream, making a 7-inch circle. Repeat with remaining cookies and cream, making 11 layers of cookies and ending with a layer of cream (there will be a few cookies left over). Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.

To serve, dust top lightly with cocoa powder.

So it's like making a giant oreo... mmmm... I wouldn't mind having that at some point. Oreos and cookies & cream aren't very popular in this country, at least not to my knowledge.

i got really excited about this when i saw it: adopt an olive tree! (http://onfoodandwine.wordpress.com/2008/05/10/nudo/)

it is the cutest thing.....you pick your tree and the growers will send you 2 packages during the year with all the product from your tree. and if you want, you can visit your tree in italy. i think this is such a cool idea because it's a small family business and they care of everything by hand and don't mass market anything. this would make a really unique gift for someone who really enjoys olive oil and artisanal food.

I love olive oil so I wouldn't mind doing that... in fact I think it's a pretty sweet idea. It's akin to cooking stuff that you've grown yourself. My family used to grow our own oregano so that has made me more appreciative of its flavour.
