My story is that, my boyfriend is asian and I'm mostly trying to figure out why such a relationship is so uncommon and why people find it so strange. ><

it's prolly more common than u think. if u look at the stats for out-marriage, they show immigrant asian women marrying out at higher rates than men, but US born/raised asians have a more equitable out-marriage rate. someone here posted stats before, but i don't feel like searching for it.

Don't take us so seriously sweetheart. Just take this as a sort of a boot camp, sort of speak, to rough you up a bit. Many of the hardcore veterans even had to go through the same initiation rites you are going through now.

So I know that two posts in a row isn't generally proper board ettiquette, so hopefully someone will have posted by the time I finish this.. just answering the few general questions/comments that I've thus far ignored...

- I'm from the "metro vancouver" area but I won't go in to any detail about my exact location

- I won't ever go on about how I love asian men, because I honestly don't have any preference... Most of my past boyfriends have been white, although being still so young, none of them have ever been "serious" relationships.

so anyhow, here's my real advice and thoughts on your original post. i'm probably getting to you before others so i'm going to try to indoctrinate you into my way of thinking.

it's not strange. it's not different. don't let anyone convince you otherwise, not anyone Asian or white or male or female. regardless of racial or gender differences, you get involved with a person based more on shared interests and traits than anything else (talking longer term relationships here). this is NOT being "race blind" as in "i don't see race" or "i don't see him/her as Asian". all it means is you don't let everyone else define you primarily as different or strange when you're no different from any other couple in a relationship.

these are a couple of the traps i see some women (or any non-Asians romantically involved with Asians for that matter) fall into. i'm not saying this is you but this is what i've run into over the years that i identify as pitfalls to look out for.

"If I date an Asian person it must mean I'm into Asians". Dating an Asian person doesn't mean you're suddenly 'into Asians' and it's all or nothing. The race of your mate does not equate a redefined sexual orientation.

"It's special and different". I guarantee that you'll have more in common with any other couple than trying to align yourself with supposed WF/AM couples.

In general, dating is obviously very different from marriage and children so I'll leave it at that. At your age and the stage of your relationship you don't have to worry too much about parents, traditions, lifestyle, etc. Though I'll do my best to answer questions you may have.
