At a B&N, I skimmed this book called Legacy of Ashes (http://www.randomhouse.com/doubleday/legacyofashes/), and its author points to a horrible history by the CIA in a few different Asian countries in the 50's.

If I can recall, in an effort to squash communism, the CIA took its fight into Korea and China with very poor affect. It tried to enlist anti commie groups and "drop" them into the heart of commie country, only to have 100's of agents turn double, or killed, or captured or all of the above.

As this review says (http://www.publishersweekly.com/article/CA6454715.html):
The first great disaster was the Korean war. The CIA missed the advent of the war, and China’s entry. It dropped thousands of agents behind the lines in North Korea and China; barely one came back.

And this article mentions (http://www.journalstar.com/articles/2008/01/18/living/gz/books/doc4786a01f0ce12739468981.txt):
In the early 1950s the CIA, sure that there was a large body of nationalist Chinese ready to battle Mao and his communist government, expended roughly $100 million in arms for what they were told was a force of 200,000 guerrillas. It was a scam. Later the CIA dropped 212 foreign agents into Manchuria. “101 were killed and 111 captured.”

Anyway, is this common knowledge in Chinese or Korean history on what the CIA was trying to do to undermine them?

not sure about CIA activities, but here is a list of links to some people, issues, and events of the 50s (of varying relevancy):
