'Monsoon' Director Pitches Comedy to ABC
Thu, Dec 5, 2002 10:24 AM PDT
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Feature-film director Mira Nair ("Monsoon Wedding" ) will make her first foray into series TV with a comedy she's developing for ABC with production company Carsey-Werner-Mandabach.
The show would be about an upper-middle-class Indian family that runs a chain of motels in New Jersey, and the culture clash between the more traditional parents and their Americanized kids.
"It's a very affectionate story," Nair tells The Hollywood Reporter. "It's about people who come from the oldest culture in the world and now find themselves in the newest culture in the world."
Nair, who directed this year's HBO movie "Hysterical Blindness," says she doesn't watch much TV but is intrigued by the opportunity to showcase a culture that gets little notice in primetime. She will executive produce and direct the pilot; Carsey-Werner-Mandabach is looking for a writer to team with her.
Nair's other credits include "Salaam Bombay!," which was nominated for a best foreign film Oscar in 1989, "Mississippi Masala" and "The Perez Family."

I'd personally rather have a sitcom full of stereotypes than no sitcom at all
besides, whats wrong with poking fun at ourselves?

like i said, it gets boring, real fast.

Yes, but All American Girl was so baaaad. By the 2nd episode I wanted to cut my nuts off. Well, not really, but you get the picture. I felt like yelling "I've waited for so long ... for this????"
That sounds great! I don't know much about Mira Nair, but she sounds like a talented and intelligent person. Hopefully, this show won't be filled with stupid offensive cringeworthy stereotypes that will make me want to throw things at the TV. Please be decent. If it is, I think it'll be wonderful to have a show on a mainstream network featuring Indian Americans.

i want a Asian American Boys in the Hood/ menace to society, like a nice survey of the southern california gang culture of the early and mid 90's. like either have it set in san gabriel valley or in Little saigon in westminster. Get the right mix of hardcore two fisted action, murder and mayhem, and drugs sex and techno/ hip hop/rap. you could have it done to the beat of DJ epic and DJ mystix!
alternative we could have one done in newyork during the same era. Bun boy could be the star: Dr. Death! rolling hard in a lexus LS400 poping out dressed up in a trenchcoat and suit, whipping out his gun and scalpel and finishing off opponents!

i disagree.
Representation via stereotypes only degrades the "race" as a whole in so much as the stereotypes display the racist/negative aspects of a "race." Imagine if Asians were stereotyped as criminals, and thiefs. Constantly having our faces bombarded onto television as a car chase occurs, or being handcuffed and taken away at the scene of a crime. These stereotype do nothing more than instill and propagate the types of things that have been maintained by the status quo as a mechanism to 1) institutionalize racism and 2) harness the support of WASPs in order to make those stereotypes acceptable. Look at what the "stereotype representation is better than no representation" has done to the African-American and Hispanic population. Is that what you're hoping for?

well. of course not. but i guess as an asian american i kind of have it easy since we're stereotyped as a model minority but i think that stereotypes are bad either way.
i just figure.. that after the initial stereotype.. maybe something positive can come out of it. i don't know.

do ya think indian girls go for east asian guys? cause i know because both of their respective cultures are 'strong' and traditional it tends to put off alot of potential couples. in my personal experience, i have seen indian guys with oriental girls but i have never seen an east asian guy with an indian girl. do indian guys like east asian girls? or is it that e asian dudes just don't like indian girls? ;) do their respective cultures put each other off?
i think this is a legit question
i've seen east asian guys dating indian girls. one of them had kind of an indian fetish i think.
I still think the failure of All-American Girl was due to the fact that besides the cast, no one else was Asian, be it the director, producers, or writers.
Lets hope this one will have input from Indian people.
