View Full Version : Stop using the offensive term "yellow race"!

I can't imagine hundred years had passed but still many people, many people (East Asians mostly), define themselves or others as "yellow race", or say "I have yellow skin", or establish a site "YellowWorld" like this!
Please remember that Asia is composed of various cultures and human phenotypes. It is the most diverse continent in the world. We have East Asians, South Asians, Central Asians, Southwestern Asians, and other mixed groups. Each group has distinct characteristics, but share the same main and glorious culture/civilizations: Asian/Eastern culture.
Therefore, please stop merely refer to Asians as East Asians. It's an ignorant and short-sighted act!
Back to the main point, East Asians are NOT YELLOW! It's an offensive term of Europeans to refer to the Far East people years ago. East Asians have pale skin tones, described as from "olive white" or "lily white" (of Northern people) to "light brown", "brown" and "dark brown" (of Central and Southern people), which are contradict to "red pink" to "light brown" of Europeans.
Admittedly, I have never heard from any Europeans uttering this term but only from East Asians! Sadly East Asians are still "racist" to themselves!!!

But the good news is, I just saved 50% or more on car insurance by switching to Geico!
dear mr. "other":
seems to me your MAIN problem is with "East Asians" and not REALLY about us calling ourselves yellow at all. seriously, re-read your post and see how often you revert back to saying "East Asians" this and "East Asians" that. don't mask your hatred for "East Asians" with a poorly executed argument against the usage of the term "yellow race".
thank you and have a nice day.

I agree with akane, but would like to add that yellowworld is dedicated to cultivating a "political Asian consciousness." I believe Asian used to be preceded by "pan-" as well. But interesting point. What if there were a similar site where people used the term "oriental" to refer to themselves as a way of reclaiming the term?

So let me get this straight. Asia is the most diverse continent in the world, ethnically, culturally, physically, skintone-wise, etc. but somehow all Asian people share the same main and glorious culture/civilizations and thus should have some type of Pan-Asian pride and unity. Got it.

I thought africa was the most diverse.

africa still needs to get over colonialism in a manner worthy of respect by the rest of the world.
IMHO, socialism did no good for them. neither did Saudi Wahhabism.
plus, the coloreds aka the African-born Asians (including Middle Easterners) being generally affluent are hated by the African majority.
add to this that African women marrying into colored society tended to socially isolate those women from their roots and did not result in them moving up in the Asiatic society into which they married unless they came from a good family to begin with. in most cases, such women were honored and respected more by their immediate family i.e. by their husbands, sons and daughters, and descendants.
so yes, africa is the most diverse, but the majority resents the outsiders to the point of violence.
but that's nothing that cannot be changed by making AID medicines more affordable to the affected cities there, and by effectively bribing militant warlords who give up their arms and munitions for peace, democracy and the future economic prosperity of their descendants.
definitely Africa's a perfect continent to enlighten, tho I've yet to hear of the Dalai Lama touring it, apart from the Tibetan ex-pat community in South Africa, yet. Just why (http://www.antiwar.com/chu/c102999.html) proves the premise that Asians might be "racist" by focusing mainly on their ethnicity within terms of "us-versus-them.

The OP kind of has a point. I wanted to join YW, but was confused if it was really for Asian, as in the Entire Asian continent or just for ...ahem..."yellow" people only. Luckily thats not the case.
I agree though...its kind of a disparaging word. And kind of doesnt make sense either, I never thought of any asian as yellow.

Yellow people, with cultural center found near the yellow river, next to the Yellow sea.. I don't think there's anything wrong with the word Yellow to refer to East Asians.
I want to take back Oriental as well. Neither should be seen as offensive.

Like most AA sites, the base population is largely Chinese.

I know a lot of asians that don't like the word "Yellow" either. Just like some Native Indians don't like being called a "Red Man". I never use the term "Yellow", but it doesn't neccessarily bother me when others use it. I just say "Asian".
Growing up in America, I saw asians of all kinds stick together. In the eyes of white people (some who should be called pink), we're all Chinese or 'yellow".
I like to claim all asians in one fold! That includes Phillipinos and Indians from India as well. When I was in High School, we had a black section, white section, latino section, Islanders (Tongans and Samoans) and an Asians section of the campus. This was the early 90's, so I assume by now, campuses aren't as segregated in the Bay Area. When our crew had beef with the honkees (who actually brought confederate flags to school), the Islanders usually got our backs. Having them Tongans stand by us made our crew look bigger as a whole!
Nowadays, there are so many asians in our local schools that banding together for survival is not an issue. But you get the picture why I like to claim all asians in one fold! If you wanna call that "Yellow", thats fine with me.

I'm gonna agree with everyone who's saying that it's an offensive term. Not sure how I feel about the concept of reclaiming it. Regardless, I don't think this means we should ditch YW for another forum when we already have a pretty strong community base here for education and support. Especially looking around at some of the other, less progressive forums..ick.

Then we've successfully reclaimed it and there is no problem.

So should blacks stop referring to themselves as black people and whites stop referring to themselves as white people?
Oh, yess.. and by the way; East-Indians and Middle-Easterners refer to themselves as Brown People, along with many Hispanics. Should they stop as well?
