last night as i exited the grocery store, a middle aged vietnamese guy around 50 y.o. said he was hungry and tried to sell me his bike. I felt sorry for him and i gave him a few bucks and a couple baked goods out of my grocery bag..i didn't take the bike obviously. He repeated "thank you i'm vietnamese" in vietnamese. My GF was with me and she is vietnamese as well, that's how i know what he said.
Rarely do i ever see asians begging but i do see a few old chinese men and women collecting cans and bottles in vancouver but not panhandling. Apparently you can make ok money on good day but it's not very steady or consistent i'm sure.
it's quite sad and it just affected a bit more enough to post this because your average vagrant or panhandler is not asian. you never see this around here.
around here there are tonnes of homeless, addicts and criminals who break into cars and houses because it's the most desired place to live in Canada.
People from all over come for the mild weather and the geographical features like the mountains and ocean.
Most of the vagrants ive seen around here are white, native indian and some blacks but i encountered only 2 vietnamese bums in my life.

I noticed one when I was visiting my friend in Boston and I admit it hit me harder than had he been non-asian.
I gave him a sandwich and $10

I can only really remember one on the west coast, in San Francisco, old homeless woman, when I said I had nothing I think she tried to press it. I don't understand why they hang out in SF, I've always gotten the impression it's an unfriendly place for the homeless. Berkeley homeless on the other hand are always well fed.

There are a lot of Asian panhandlers in SF. They hang around the tourist trappy areas, and they do make decent cash, from when I've talked to the older granny sorts. There are programs in SF that provide food and such to the elderly panhandlers, and the soup kitchens are slightly more plentiful in quantity in SF, at least in the Tenderloin and the Mission districts.
Then again, there was a report on panhanders, esp. ones in SF, where some of them weren't even homeless. There are apparently hot spots where people panhandle and can get upwards of $200.00 a day just standing at an intersection and begging.
I'm not saying that all of beggars/panhandlers are this way, but there are some that are just deceiving people. Plenty of kooky Asian ones.

there is a problem here with vagrants bugging tourists and everyone.
agressive panhandling is a hot issue here esp. since the olymics are coming in 2010 and they don't want the bums around for the world to see.

That's sad but I know it's true.
I also heard about that from my sister who works at UCSF, though I think it's completely lame just giving out money, some of these people don't need the money and even if you are beggar pple don't know if they are going to spend it on Booze or drugs.

That's why my friends started giving them cookies/sandwiches. Granted, one or two came sailing back at them with curses and such, most were received with smiles and thanks.

I heard Vancouver might just give them all a free greyhound ticket to somewhere else, anywhere but here hehe.

I have never seen an asian bum. Ever. I've seen white, black, latino, and even a middle eastern one.

I've seen Asian bums.
In Asia.

my sister is an asian bum.
"jay, can you give me a ride?"
"jay, can you pick me up?"
"jay, can you give me your kidney?"
it never ends with that girl. GOSH.

I've seen old Asian women collecting cans on the street and begging around Downtown LA and in Oakland around Jack London Square before.
And... drumroll. Asia.

Do you get out of BART on Stattuck, you can swarm with homeless people asking for money or a cigerette. I think Berkeley homeless people are annoying and rude, while SF homeless people just don't bother you and sit there with a cup.
