Does anyone use an external hard drive? I'd like to know the best ones out there(for cheap) cuz I'm taking video and sound classes at school and don't want people to mess with my stuff. The teachers say it's ok to leave it on storage just as long as we have our names and class names on the files but....some idiots who think their projects are worth more than yours might trash them. So just want to keep my stuff on me in case this happens cuz there's no way I'm wasting 6 hours on a project just to have it trashed the next day. If you can help me at all thanks alot!!! :)

External HDD? Hmm. Based on reliability of about 100 units in the past year, I think Western Digital has improved dramatically. The ones with 8MB buffers (JB designation) cost more but perform well. Seagate drives are good unless you have one of the first 10K SCSI drives. IBM Deskstar drives are good but have taken a downturn in quality. Do not buy any Fujitsu drives, period.
I'd buy: Western Digital, Seagate, IBM. Maxtor has been ok but the sample size did not include many of these drives.
Anyway, that's a generalized observation of a small sample size. These brands do not represent external drives, only drives in general. I've never had the need for an external unit so I don't know what comes in those boxes. Good luck.

I trust Tom's Hardware. Those guys are smart. Check out their article on a WD drive.

Please note that the article is 1/2 a year old and there may be larger Firewire drives out.
Thanks for the helpful info.... :)

tom is a dick and a corporate sell out.
i could get him to do a review of shit vs. any computer hardware, and have shit win, with the right amount of money.
they also cause "accidents" to affect their opponents.
in fact, the only mofo more biased is the retard in charge of the [H]. x_X
*edit* i am in no way discrediting WD. i now own ibm, maxtor, and wd. but most of my drives, and my most important stuff goes on my wd drives. probably cause i got lucky and dropped a 100gb wd from 30ft up and got it to work fine. this luck is called the, "you're the luckiest bastage in the world that you're drive didn't go splat" level of luck.

Really? How can you be sure? Can you cite some examples? They seem to be decently unbiased and knowledgable in the articles that I have read.

what about anandtech? i used to go to tom's and hardocp, but they started some hissy fit fights with each other (and van's too) so i hopped on over to anand's site.

anadtech is a bit of a whore too, but at least not nearly as bad as thg.
hey will, if you want to see people's reactions to thg, go to www.overclockers.com join the forums, and ask "is tom's hardware an accurate and unbiased review site on computer hardware?"
you'll find your answer. :D
as well as many other sites i could list.

Well what exactly is the problem with leaving it in storage?
I guess what I'm asking mainly is: Are you guys utilizing a Domain model for user permissions/shares? Usually Administrators setup the Domain structure in a way that when you log into the domain, you only have access to your own folders and files. In essence, keeping the files safe.
If you are stuck running Win9x then buy a HD. If there is no Global Security policy in place, buy a HD. If you are just paranoid and will feel better with a new HD, buy a new HD.
If you trust your LAN Admin, then leave it server-side.

the problem with leaving it in storage is that it's a free for all if they feel like using all the space on the computer, meaning they can delete it w/o feeling bad cuz "their project is more important than yours". We don't have to log in to use the computers, but if we did then would i even have to ask anyone for their help? No. To those that HAVE helped me THANKS.
Anyway I already know what to do and how to get a hd so i don't need anymore advice. <_<

Friends, of course.
I just read that you didn't want your project files to be trashed, and mentioned buying a new hard drive. Since nobody else mentioned leaving it server-side, I thought I would at least mention it. If it did not turn out to be a viable option, at least it was explored. I meant no harm or offense. :)
Cool :)
No need to reply to this.
