Korean kimbap rolls out of sushi's shadow (http://www.straight.com/article-94158/korean-kimbap-rolls-out-of-sushis-shadow)

anyways, which do you prefer??

kimbap's good on 'no soy sauce days'.

I did not know a lot of this before. And I never thought about this whole soy sauce thing -- kimbap is great just plain, and I have had plenty of sushi that's just kind of lacking without something to dress it up. I love the teriyaki eel though. Kimbap is a reliable, tasty meal, but some sushi can be better.

But cheese sounds pretty scary. I still don't get the cheese in ramyun thing.

I actually prefer sushi. I like that it rarely has a vegetable in it, other than specialty rolls. Maybe a better comparison would be kimbap and maki roll.

My favorite comfort food, though, is plain rice wrapped in seaweed. Which I guess is like really low rent kimbap.

kimbap is more filling. i think.
i like spicy tuna kimbap with perilla leaves.
well, perilla anything, you can't go wrong.

actually, sushi is kinda boring for me.
and i prefer the special rolls when i eat sushi.
with all the fillings in it.
sushi is too dainty for me.

Aw, see, I like the plainness. *Kim & Meena, separated by ingredients*

also, it's my need to eat until i'm about
to burst. and with sushi it gets too expensive.
kimbap is more economical?!??
omg. i sound like a fat tub of lard.

Wow, that sounds good. I had no idea what you were talking about with perilla until I looked it up though -- I always thought it was sesame leaves! Perilla is really good though..never tried it in sushi or kimbap before.

But I agree with the fillingness thing.

It's more aromatic, better textured with a good crunch, and, dare we say it–tastier. It doesn't need a soy-sauce bath to spruce it up; it holds its own, unadorned. And it's addictive.

pure ignorance

that's problem with food journalism these days

i don't remember if i've ever had kimbap, but if i did, i probably just thought they were fat sushi rolls without raw fish. most sushi places in DC are Korean-owned anyway (i like to mess with the waitresses and say thank you in Korean), so i don't know why they don't explicitly put kimbap in their menus alongside sushi. shit, they already play Korean music in those sushi restaurants.

I went to Sushi Taro or Taro Sushi, in DC can't remember the name, but the 35 dollar chef selection was really impressive for the price.

The fish quality, rice texture, fish selection, cutting skills was really high, very comparable to high end places in NY.

I like both....

But I like sushi a little more because of the vinagar (hard to explain) and the fish.

It's like comparing lo mein with spaghetti. The only thing kimbap and sushi have in common is rice and seaweed.

I have wondered why kimbap isn't more popular in the US, though. I think with some time a fast food joint selling kimbap, jajangmyun, nengmyun, bibimbap, and just a couple of other items could do very well. Even the pickiest eaters love nengmyun.

^Because white people fear the kim chi.

That's a pretty good idea though.

there's a kimbap house two blocks from where
i live and they have all these special kimbap.
yesterday i tried the fried shrimp one.
basically tasted like a special sushi roll.
i also think there's too much rice in kimbap.
and i hate it when they're too lazy to season it.

Kimbab is only good in crisis situations when there is absolutely nothing else to eat.

I love 'em both, for their unique qualities. Hahaha. I'm so indecisive, why am I even in this thread?....

i'd have to say sushi.

the thing with kimbap is that it's hit or miss. some places go overboard with the sesame oil and, though it'll still taste okay, it'll leave me feeling sick afterwards.

sushi = no oil.

i like tekka maki.

I just had Kimbap not too long ago so I'll go with Kimbap.

Whoa, there's quite a number of resurrected threads in here.

I don't think I've ever had proper kimbap before... except that maybe there was this one time in Montreal when I ate something similar at a Korean-run Japanese restaurant. Hmmm.
