I have a coworker who says that New York isn't a vacation. I disagreed. She says that Hawaii and coastal places are "real" vacations.
Think there's a general attitude that way?
And when people say they are going to New York for a vacation, is it general NYC?

I think your coworker is a dumbass.
if you're not going for a funeral, wedding, or work, then it's a vacation. in general, i mean, not just to new york. plus, you can vacation at home by just turning all your phones off and vegging on the couch. damn, that means i vacation everyday.
anywho, is it just new york that your coworker has such a disdain for? or does it extend to other states as well?

Maybe it's the perception about the air or something.
Her kid, not only a few months out of birth, suffered from life threatening seizures. She's recovering, but still has to undergo constant back therapy. I contributed 64 hours of my own sick leave to help with her medical benefits. I think their family has to keep the kid out of city environments, if they can help it, because of the air.
I think there are folks that think that getting away from city life makes for a better vacation.

I know some people who only associate the word "vacation" with beaches.

i know a lot of people view "vacation" as a time to sit back, lounge around and relax. actually this seems to be kind of an American attitude, in my experience. when HKers go on vacation, it means they pack in as much activities as possible, and basically wearing themselves out through the whole trip. anyway, i can do sitting around on a beach for maybe a day or two. but after that i'll probably get bored.

maybe because of all the sight seeing that's involved?
that could be considered work?

If vegging is one's idea of a vacation, he or she certainly could do that in NYC (in places like Central Park), but in such a place with so much going on, what's the point of doing that?
Also, although they're not great, there are beaches in NYC too, and even more just a short train ride away.
you don't go to a place like nyc to veg out. that's like saying "i'm going to vegas to sit on my ass in the hotel room."

Funny you should say that.
Know a model friend who did just that. She had a commercial to shoot for the tourist biz, there. She doesn't gamble, so she stayed in her room.
well, it takes all kinds.

Depends on what you consider a vacation. I travel for excitement and novelty. I take a 'vacation' from boredom. Never have I been somewhere expecting to kick back and relax all day. That can be done somewhere closer to home.

so, I'm going there for a few days and have maybe like a day of spare time to kill. Anything attractions I shouldn't miss or nice restaurant and bar recommendations?

I'll be around Murray Hill (?). I'm doing a lot of work stuff, so maybe some nice restaurants and bars, and maybe some bookstores?

OK, there's lots of bars on 2nd Ave in that area.
How "nice" is nice for restaurants? One nickname of the area is "Curry Hill," so there's lots of Indian restaurants. Also, just south of that area is a big Japanese area.
Bookstores? Not sure about that.

If you don't like traveling much, Grand Central Oyster Bar (http://www.oysterbarny.com/oysterbar/html/index2.htm) followed by Little Pie Company (http://www.littlepiecompany.com/) for desert are both in Grand Central Station.

Name some places that kids could enjoy in nyc, excluding Central Park or some ball park.
