One person who isn't buying that response is Chinese Chamber of Commerce consultant Rose Pak (http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/07/04/BAGKTQQOP51.DTL), who has enjoyed friendly relations with China's government and escorted mayoral delegations to the Far East over the years.

"I just think it's the bumbling FBI," Pak said. "First they recruit newly arrived monolingual immigrants, then they spend hundreds of thousands targeting the same group of immigrants -- like they did with (accused Los Alamos National Laboratory spy) Wen Ho Lee."

Chinese Community Troubled by FBI Ad (http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/07/12/18434905.php)

Thursday, July 12, 2007: The FBI recently advertised in Chinese-language newspapers asking readers to report on potential Chinese spies. The ads created a stir among Chinese Americans, reports NAM editor Eugenia Chien. Chien monitors Chinese-language papers for New America Media.

SAN FRANCISCO – An FBI advertisement in three major Chinese-language newspapers asking the community to contact the agency with “any intelligence service whose intent is to harm the United States” has caused a stir among Chinese Americans. Civil rights advocates are calling the advertisement a troubling reminder of the turbulent history between the FBI and the Chinese community.

The black-and-white Chinese-language ad, which ran in the World Journal, Ming Pao Daily and Sing Tao Daily from June 30 to July 8, asked for help from the Chinese community in the FBI’s counter-espionage program.

Hahaha like they're gonna catch any real spies like that. A significant amount of readership in some of these papers will support Chinese spies. The government is gonna have to spend some time pursuing dead ends and screwing some people over until they realize they've been had by people who decided to report spy on someone or a competitor that didn't like.

It reminds me of how FBI was/is urging Chinese/Korean/Arab speakers to apply for jobs. Uh hire me to betray my own peoples. kay no thanks bye.

According to an article in the Epoch Times (http://en.epochtimes.com/news/7-7-24/57977.html):

This news has had strong repercussions among Chinese authorities. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Qin Gang said on July 10 that the FBI ad had harmed bilateral relations and friendship between the two peoples, adding that Chinese authorities wanted to express its "indignation and resolute opposition" to the FBI's action.

i don't know what the general concensus is, but i personally regard it as a mouthpiece of Falun Gong for their anti-China trash talking.

this kind of thing happened also happened during the communist scare, specifically during the first years following the establishment of the PRC. there was a sentiment that many Chinese Americans were in the US illegally and sent as spies. a confession program was implemented where Chinese Americans can come forth and admit that they are not legal resident, and also to "rat out" other Chinese Americans who were either in the US illegally or who were communists. the problem was that this confession program had wide ranging powers and extended no guarantee of any exemptions or protection to those who came forth and confessed. although to the government's credit, few that came forth were actually deported even though they were illegal.
