I really love the RPG games and for a LONG LONG time, Final Fantasy 2 (4 in Japan) was my most favorite. I even swore that it was better than any of those playstation Final Fantasies, which I never ever liked at all, but those are the ones that became so much more popular than anything in the past. But I liked the Original on the NES and also the game on the SNES. Final Fantasy 7 failed to win me over, and 8 and 9 and 10 haven't done much for me either.

FF2 was the greatest RPG game of all time until I played Skies of Arcadia on my Dreamcast. WOW! This game was awesome! Try it if you have not yet.

The rest of them I just listed because I tried to put in either popular ones or ones I have played. They aer pretty much mediocre.

Chrono Trigger, hands down. (Chrono Cross was on PSX by the way.)

Although it's fight system is a bit different with combo attacks and its somewhat a bit inferior to the FF series style, the story makes up for it. I mean, I still remember the plot to this day...it's great. The whole mystique of the whole journey and the enemy they faced...and the character development! After beating it and using it's New Game + like 60 times, I grew wayyy attached to the characters, and the plot really began to shine for me after the first time I beat it. I still pick it up from time to time to get some nostalgic kicks.

FF games are great as well, I just favor CC.

xenogears was pretty damn good. well, least the story was. i'm still pretty confused as to what happened. i occasionally have to read the spoilers to find out <_<
what's about "xenosaga"? a sequel? is it any good?

FF tactics was awesome too. I racked up too many hours on it. Also not too bad was Vandal Hearts.

Don't bother with FF9 and FF8. Wild Arms kind of sucked. Didn't play any of the Breath of Fires, or Saga games, or Lunar, or Star Ocean ... shit i skipped out on lots ..

Xenogears or Front Misson 3. Both from Square. And I never beat either of them :o I've never played any of the games listed.

You can only have 10 options on a poll.

Otherwise I would have gone with Suikoden, Wild Arms, Xenogears, Secret of Mana (which includes secret of evermore and the gameboy finalfantasies), Tactics, and a few of the others I've played.

I'm a CRPGer and disdained console "RPG" for the longest time but Chrono Trigger showed me the possibilities of the platform. The depth and execution of the story are simply phenomenal and rival that of the best CRPGs. There are several alternate endings, and in a way, a slightly non-deterministic opportunity not available in most other games. I never felt like there was a carrot dangling in front of me, like the FF series; it was truly engrossing.

I also liked Earthbound mostly because it's cute.

speaking of crpgs, who else plays them? i was baldurs gate (and all its progeny's) bitch for several years. before then it was fallout. before then it was betrayal at krondor. man... those were the days. :) none of the console rpgs i've played even come close. i've played some of the final fantasy's and chrono cross and grandia. none of them held a candle to crpgs. :P

About the only type of game I play besides TeamFortress Classic. If you like those, it's kinda old, but I think you'll love Planescape: Torment. It's a bit more... adventure-ish than RPG but the story is amazing. If you're new to the Planescape campaign setting, it will blow your mind.

The first CRPG I played was The Bard's Tale and that had me hooked. I think Wasteland is the best game ever made, and when Fallout was released, I jizzed in my pants (Fallout is the spiritual "sequel" to Wasteland). I'm currently playing NeverWinter Nights and it's sucking up all my spare time.

Is that based on By The Water Margin/Outlaws of the Marsh? If it isn't... the number 108... is a really odd coincidence. I would love a game where I could play as Li Kui =)

Supposedly, there were some influences from the Water Margin, but I dunno the book well-enough to make the connections. I've only read up to the point where Lu Da wreaks havoc in the monastery.

yah its the story of the 108 stars gathering in times of crisis also its the most political and realistic of all the fantasy RPG's it takes place in a heavy political climate. suikoden 3 introduces relgion and racism also.

the quote function doesn't appear to be working... but anyways, this is in response to ism.

like i said, i've playing all baldur's gate's progeny (except for Icewind Dale II cuz i'm waiting until the holidays.) planescape was incredible. i especially loved the areas where u just ran around reading descriptions of stuff. i could spend an hour just talking to ppl or reading about experiences etc etc. wonderful game.

once i get my new comp, i'll start neverwinter and morrowwind.

what system has suikoden come out for? if its for ps2 then i might give it a shot.

Anything on the old school Super NES (Famicom). All RPGs of today, including the ones made by Square are just wannabe movie eye candy, all CGI fests with little innovation in gameplay.

Suikoden 1 is the only one I have played, and it was good, but I didn't really see how Young Master Eugene McDohl fits anywhere in a chinese storyline with narcistic knights and cavaliers.
