I give you your Dream Girl. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7pr0HmE-gU)

This girl freaks me out because she doesn't have much of an American accent and the flow of her speech is super smooth. I'm also really impressed that she not only taught herself but that she records and watches herself. That's really tough.

I don't know if I remember enough proper grammar to know if she's got the right conjugations and articles, etc. but the SOUND, the pace... s'really good.

oh my god this white woman speaks bad Cantonese just like HK people do, with their "lazy" pronounciation.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9-PPFA48AY

is it my imagination or does she actually have a Cantonese accent when she speaks English?

I have to give a Keanu Reeves-ish "whoa" to that lady.

I don't speak Cantonese, but I have heard it being spoken a lot and can spot it immediately (TVB serials + restaurant industry) and if I didn't see her I'd never guess it was a non-Chinese. I guess I can somewhat empathize with redneck midwesterners being amazed with asians speaking english... ehh, maybe not.

As much as I eschew fetishism in general, I have to admit I nearly creamed my pants when I was in vietnam and saw this cute teenaged french chick speaking (not too horrible) vietnamese with the natives. They were equally amazed.

Its weird. When I first saw the video Kim posted, I was going to shove sageb1 aside for the girl with her redhair, racoon eyes, and the fluency of her japanese. But, then, I watched one of her videos in english, and the magic was gone. There was just something so cute and endearing when she speaks japanese that's missing when she speaks english.

Someone accused her of trying to be Japanese. She's not dying her hair black or anything. She's trying to communicate like a Japanese girl would, which I guess is trying to be Japanese in a way, but I personally think it's all in effort to speak Japanese, not pretend she's Japanese. Good god, if I could auction this girl off in Japan.

Honestly, I have gained some Chinese affectations over the years. It's not because I think I'm Chinese (Japanese superiority complex not withstanding) but I just tend to pick it up environmentally. But back to her. Recording yourself and watching it to improve is hard. Maybe I should do that.

And where's sage with my cookie?

white chicks that can speak mandarin are hot.

all the asian non chinese women that i've dated never put in the effort to learn mandarin to impress mother. all the chinese non mandarin speaking women that i've dated never put in the effort either. all the white women that i've dated however at least attempted and some even made a real concerted effort to attempt to learn mandarin.

it's not a requirement that a woman i date know how to speak mandarin or learn to speak mandarin nor do i request that she do so. but, the gesture of doing so without being asked just so she can impress and communicate better with mother is one of these things that basically seperates her from a woman i would introduce as just another girlfriend from a woman i would introduce as a girlfriend with long term potential when i talk about her to mother.

putting aside any supposed or real attempts to pretend she's Japanese, i watched her English intro video to see what her deal was, and it says that she's 20 years old, lives in Illinois, and have studied Japanese for 4 years. if she's as fluent as you say she is, then she's pretty good, without having been immersed in it.

this is some other white chick that says she speaks Japanese, this video cracked me up:

Fluent as in flow, and getting the right sound and mannerisms down for gender and age. She doesn't really say anything complicated or educated. For what she does - hang around other girls chatting, she seems to be good for picking it up.

Second chick you posted is more of a typical college learner. I think she often wears her sarcastic pants while vlogging. It does strike me a bit weird though. Can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's the "why" portion. The first chick is using it as a tool to watch herself and improve. The second chick is doing it for an audience. You study Japanese. Congrats? So do a lot of people. You'll be sadly behind the curve of Mandarin learners.

yeah she's acting up just for her videos. she explained it in a more serious video she posted after she started getting emails about how she's cocky. she also said that she's actually self-taught and have never taken a class, and don't learn from textbooks. she said that she learnt from music and instructional videos (and probably lots of anime). don't know how true that is, but that's what she claims.

Could be. I only watched one where she was talking about going to Japan and assumed it was Japanese related like a study abroad. Usually teens don't up and go to Japan unless parents are rich. And what she did say in Japanese sounded very textbooky - that's probably what gave me that impression.

My parents aren't rich.

Anyways too bad I can't see the video on this computer, I shall critique later.

She's quite the internet "celebrity".
Which, of course, earns her haters. Of which I'm one.

She's trying WAY too hard, IMO.

Lmao, I warn you, this stuff is just plain harsh, I'm going to give you a bunch of links, talking shit about her, because the ones that that actually admire her are just stupid and boring.

Warning - Must be immature, and don't take this stuff too seriously. Will probably offend some people. Also not safe for work or school (because of language and/or pictures)

Some comments:
"Otherwise, though, her intonations are still all over the place. Likewise with her grammar, really. Stuff like present tense where past tense should be used and vice versa. Also crap like overusing grammar forms like "no ni" and in the wrong places sometimes. Basically, it's all still very much in the "Gaijin Japanese" category."

"You really can see the anime in the way shes speaks Japanese. It's pretty fucking hilarious. If you watch the English videos, she's a brash tomboyish girl with a somewhat deep voice.
Contrast that with a Japanese video and it's day and night. She does the whole meek and high-pitched cutesy voice"

"I don't blame this girl on the videos, necessarily, but I really wanna punch her square in the face. Really bad.
She reminds me of a girl (who also looked like her, actually) in Japan who was so full of herself that no one, even Japanese people, would go around her. Some of my Japanese friends would ask her like "oh what's blah blah blah" in English and she'd reply *あたしは辞書じゃないでしょ!” She'd constantly talk about how great her Japanese was and how naturally she picked it up and stuff. I really wanted to take a piss in her coffee. Really bad. Still do. Her name is Amanda. She lives around Atsugi. If you meet her, please piss in her coffee."

"It doesn't really matter how old she is or how long she's been studying Japanese. There's no excuse pretending like you're the shit and misleading a metric Internet of babbling anime otaku ninnies into believing you have a command over the language when in fact you have just self-taught for a couple of years. In reality, your Japanese "friends" can't stand you.
I'm 21 and I studied for 3 years. Big fucking deal. We all have a long way to go."

" wow, what a pretentious cunt.
"hi! i speak fluent japanese!"
*punch*
"ow! you broke my nose! the japanese word for that is 'hana'!"

ROFLMAO yes she does have a Cantonese accent for English! A slight one, but its noticeable!

I think I've been to that church before... my sister and I went to their church (pastored by Sharon Balcombe's dad Dennis Balcombe) and it was hilarious because Dennis spoke passable Cantonese and pretty good Mandarin actually. (Keep in mind he lived in HK for close to 30 years now and actually dove into the local community unlike many other expats) There were a bunch of Caucasians there who spoke Cantonese and Mandarin like it was supposed to be normal.

Was that supposed to be some sort of midlevel Korean class project?

Isn't Korean kinda similiar to Japanese? I dunno, sometimes when I listen to Korean being spoken, it sounds like Japanese to me.

You could just as easily say "foreigner in Japan". My college roomie was a model in Japan. Notice I say Japan and nowhere else. I'm sure she could get a job teaching English as well.

I'm pretty sure my mom's cousin would hit her over the head and drag her back to his salariman lair.

You've got to be kidding me. She's so annoying.

To be fair, she used to look A LOT worse. And her teeth were all kinds of fucked up. At least she's getting money off of her "talents" however meager they may be...you can't really hate her for that.

Pretty much. My older brother was a model and was in TV commericals, my friend is a model and I have been asked.

We've all been paid to teach English.

My nephew and neice have been asked to be models too. I'm hoping to rush them into modeling/singing/acting/tv personality/movie actor so they can get rich and take care of their good ole uncle.

apparently there's a huge huge difference between how she looks in her own videos and how she really looks when she can't control camera angle and lighting (or when she can't hide her teeth).

Let's put it this way: on the streets of Japan I had people taking my picture simply because I was a foreigner. When I was a teen my grandmother tried to get my mother to have me model in Japan. My roomie, the girl who was a model in Japan for a couple of years, was average looking by US standards. She was also a club girl who spent as much time hanging on the arms of bousouzoku wannabes as she did model work.

Star power is important in Japan. They're Japanese, and while easily infatuated perhaps, they're not oblivious to the fact that someone up and coming in Japan is not an American A-Lister. It's easy to be a local rock star, big fish in a small pond. She could make it big locally by learning to speak really well. That would set her apart.

Just like I worry slightly for the day I bring my son to Taipei when he's old enough to ditch me and act on hormones. He's going to be an acceptably Chinese, somewhat-white American dude with just a hint of Japanese. Must keep hoochies at bay.
