06.28.07Facebook: A Wonderful Forum for Connecting Anti-Asian RacistsPosted in Protest, Hate Crimes and Racism at 12:44 am by admin
A group of students at Fox Chapel High School (Fox Chapel, PA) have decided that racism towards Asian Americans was simply not yielding a sufficient number of:
harassment incidents,
racially motivated cold-blooded murders
and racially motivated baseball-bat beatings.
In a definitive move to expand the sentiment which perpetuate hate-crimes against Asian Americans, these industrious high school students have therefore constructed an Anti-Asian Facebook Group.

Below is a copy of a letter sent to Fox Chapel High School, Fox Chapel Pennsylvania in regards to the high school students who have created this anti-Asian online Facebook group.
Here’s what you can do to stand up for your community’s dignity:
Call the school at 412-967-2430 (see sample letter below for things to say)
Call Bettsy Diller at 412-967-2429 (she fields questions about the high school)
Contact Beverly Schulte at 412-967-2443 or at beverly_schulte@fcasd.edu(see sample letter below). She fields questions about the school district.
Send some feedback to the Pennsylvania Inter-Agency Task Force on Civil Tension
Contact the PA Governor’s Advisor Commission on Asian American Affairs
Contact OCA - Pittsburg
Here’s our letter to Fox Chapel High School:
Date: June 27, 2007 9:00:04 PM EDT
To: beverly_schulte@fcasd.edu
Subject: your students’ unacceptable behavior
Dear Ms. Schulte,
The following students have created and participate in a racist anti-Asian online group on Facebook.com entitled “Anti-Asians Anonymous”.
Billy Hagberg (Fox Chapel Area High School)
Winston McCarty (Fox Chapel Area High School)
Anders Bergren (Fox Chapel Area High School)
Aaron Cichowski (Fox Chapel Area High School)
Adam Borowski (Fox Chapel Area High School)
Brandon Elkins (Fox Chapel Area High School)
Michael Paradise (Fox Chapel Area High School)
Kevin McKamish (Fox Chapel Area High School)
Greg Vaisleib (Fox Chapel Area High School)
Sam Caushaj (Fox Chapel Area High School)
Nick Horne (Fox Chapel Area High School)
Brian Skura (Fox Chapel Area High School)
Alec Christie (Fox Chapel Area High School)
Tom Stewart (Fox Chapel Area High School)
Nicholas Lombardi (Fox Chapel Area High School)
Nick Bacco (Fox Chapel Area High School)
I am stunned that this type of web site could be created by educated individuals in modern-day American society. I have notified the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Asian American Affairs, the Pennsylvania Inter-Agency Task Force on Civil Tension, and the Pittsburg Chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans regarding this matter. On your school’s website, you’ve indicated that “Fox Chapel Area has also been at the forefront of progressive educational initiatives.” I am certain you would agree that constructing a website entitled “Anti Asians Anonymous” is an action that is clearly inconsistent with your “progressive educational initiatives,” and is an offensive action that deserves immediate attention by your educational institution.
I look forward to hearing your swift response to this matter.

The more I interact with you, the more I think you're a troll. Arex's analysis was obviously way off, but so is yours. And I hardly think that Fallout Central is an embarrassment. I've been there on occasion and can't recall seeing anything on the level of MM. It's not the intent, but rather the effects of something. By your logic, blackface parties are okay if they're simply satire. And why are you trying to make light of the situation?

-CHOPSTICKS- the dirty secret behind this "utensil"... your anus won't be happy!
-Ever wonder who let the mexicans and canadians in?
-Another Chinese hideout in a giant bowl of urine. Where'd they go?

Well, I wouldn't call MM an embarrassment because it's so far below that. I'd say more like pathological.

I don't need uptight, humorless, sissyish Asian activists "representing" the oppressed Asian in America. They totally misunderstood the comedy. And if the jokes were lame so what, she's a female comic.....THEY'RE ALL LAME, THEY'RE GIRLS.
The problem with Fallout and others is they are just laying in wait to find some reason to be all irritated and offended and they're always looking for a reason to throw a hissy fit. It's just not my style. I don't like it. I said I don't like it but if you do great. Join the party.

Golden Monkey, what kind of circumstances or situations would you think deserve for Asian people to speak up in protest? as you may or may not know, the Asian American community is quite known to be politically silent, and it's not too difficult for someone to interpret your attitude as essentially being the "typically" passive Asian (but looking at your profile, it seems you may not even be Asian after all). so maybe you could also tell us what are some things you think deserve attention, and what you have actually spoken up about in complaint.

All right, calling you a troll may have been unnecessary -- but that's assuming you have people on the boards who can vouch for your credibility. Otherwise, I don't see what the big deal is. And as you may know, I'm willing to argue things out, and occasionally concede defeat so obviously I'm not using such underhanded tactics to drown you out. I'm just trying to sound the alarm as a precaution.
Well, I wouldn't call MM an embarrassment because it's so far below that. I'd say more like pathological.

And if the jokes were lame so what, she's a female comic.....THEY'RE ALL LAME, THEY'RE GIRLS.
Somewhat off-topic: Do you have an account at MM?
And really, if you're wondering why I'm calling you a troll, it's things like this. That's such a white/male/heterosexual line of ad hominem reasoning. Taking your earlier argument, it's no different from calling someone a troll in order to make their points seem invalid or radical because of personal traits. And yeah, that's pretty sexist but seems like a joke. But then your last sentence makes that seem unlikely.
The problem with Fallout and others is they are just laying in wait to find some reason to be all irritated and offended and they're always looking for a reason to throw a hissy fit. It's just not my style. I don't like it. I said I don't like it but if you do great. Join the party.
Along the same lines as the above point, you're trying to change the perception of them as overly sensitive whiners because they have a deeper-level analysis of the social issues that pervade our lives. No different from being able to analyze the messages that the media give us, except that here it's deeper (in that it involves race) and taken further (analysis that is shared as knowledge). Obviously, whenever a minority group is pushing for rights through action and/or education, there are going to be a lot of people (especially those involved with, or a part of the dominant groups in society) who are going to perceive every push for equality and respect as greed and hypersensitivity, which is not the case.
I don't care about intent or results based on "sensitivity". I look for lameness versus intelligence. To me lameness reflects back on the person. White kids in black face at a party are an embarrassment to THEMSELVES and their families. All this lame as shit is just weak but I'm not gonna act all wounded about it and go PMS on the losers.
Because I'm a MAN. Not a pissed off little boy.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. And that's a rather subjective analysis. How many of these parties have you been to? How many people do you know on a personal basis who've gone to these? Because you never know if their intent was simply to make a strong social statement by skewing stereotypes, playing them up to such a radical degree that ANY intelligent observer would be able to recognize just how ridiculous these stereotypes are. Personally, I think Chelsea's embarrassed herself pretty badly here with such a cheap, low-brow joke on such a complex issue as transracial adoption. Kinda like jokes on rape or the like.
Lol sorry Mr. Man please don't hurt me with your muscles. This goes beyond whatever ridiculous notions of manhood you have. If you want to play it off as an issue of personal pride, just another minor affront from someone beneath you which you have to take stoically, then I understand that desire. But personally, I see issues like this in the light of: do I want my fellow APIAs, and our children, to have to deal with crap like this every day for the rest of their lives? Please, if you think these jokes have made me doubt my driving ability or any aspect of my self, you have much too low an opinion of me. I'm just interested in fighting those who try to keep us stuck in this cycle of self-hate.

lol
since when are "sexism" and "homophobic" "PC code words"? I doubt your grasp of social issues is anywhere near competent. Sexism and homophobia are dictionary definitions referring to discrimination against certain minority groups. If anything, their PC counterparts would be "chauvinism" and "rejection of alternative lifestyles."

Pittsburgh H.S. Students Create 'Anti-Asians Anonymous' Group on Facebook.com
The AA community protests the group, forcing it to be shut down. Unfortunately, similar hateful sentiment still remains on the popular networking site.
By Caroline Aoyagi-Stom, Executive Editor
Published July 20, 2007
When some students at Fox Chapel Area High School in Pittsburgh, Penn. decided to start their own group on the popular Facebook.com networking site, their choice of topic wasn't the Pittsburgh Pirates or the new Harry Potter flick - it was an anti-Asian group they cheekily called "Anti-Asians Anonymous."
"I ate your dog, but I'm not sorry!!!" is the bubble quote beside a generic photo of a young Asian man. And under "Recent News" there are fake news titles like: "Pearl Harbor: Our only mistake was stopping at two. Tom Brokaw reports" and "Another Chinese hideout in a giant bowl of urine. Where'd they go?"
Among the 25 group members, 16 are identified as currently attending Fox Chapel Area High School and the two administrators are listed as Fox Chapel students Billy Hagberg and Winston McCarty.
But Hagberg himself takes credit for the group, claiming to have created it over a year ago, getting little notice from Facebook administrators even though the company's own conduct policy states: "you may not post or share content that ... is derogatory, demeaning, malicious, defamatory, abusive, offensive or hateful."
It wasn't until this past June that the site began to receive some unwanted attention, mainly from Asian Americans in the Pittsburg area and nationally, including Fallout Central, an online space that mobilizes AAs to fight racism.
"By calling, e-mailing, faxing, and writing to the administrators of Fox Chapel Area High School, a clear message was sent out to the high school that this was clearly offensive, racist, and certainly incongruous with the school's touted success in being 'at the forefront of progressive educational initiatives,'" said William Lee of Fallout Central.
By early July "Anti-Asians Anonymous" was no more and creator Hagberg took down his profile from Facebook.com. Unfortunately, a number of similar anti-Asian groups could still be found on the site including: "I hate Asian people" and "All Texans are racist against Asians!!!"
Why Create Such a Group?
Defiant at first, Hagberg eventually acquiesced to his error in creating the anti-Asian site, although in the same breath he took a swipe at the AA community for singling him out.
In an e-mail response to Fallout Central, Hagberg expressed his thoughts on the controversy: "I apologize to anyone who took offense to this group. I am not a racist, and believe one of the major hindrances in our country and world is ignorance based on race. This was simply a joke, based on the ludicracy of existing stereotypes. I never meant to incite any hatred, only to get a laugh."
But later on he says, "There are certainly much bigger threats to Asians than a high-schooler on one website. In my opinion, if you are to make any changes, you need to recognize real threats, their sources, and appropriate courses of action. Why didn't anyone ask me about this, instead of random authority figures in my life? I support your cause, but your methods certainly leave much to be desired."
McCarty was listed alongside Hagberg's name as one of the administrators of "Anti-Asians Anonymous" but in an e-mail to the Pacific Citizen he says he never agreed to be an administrator. McCarty also apologized for the site, explaining that he had foolishly joined the group without looking into what it was all about.
"I deeply regret that I was associated with the group and that in so doing offended many people," he said. "I am not a racist and I have many Asian friends that I have humbly apologized to. I sincerely apologize to anyone that was offended by my joining this group."
On July 10, Facebook announced that it had hit the 30 million mark in active members. The site, originally created for high school and college kids as a way to network with their peers, is now open to anyone with a valid e-mail address.
Although the site has a majority of legitimate groups created by users with similar interests, the openness of today's Internet makes it almost impossible to monitor those who have ulterior motives, especially when it comes to hateful sentiment.
Soon after the Pacific Citizen contacted Facebook about several anti-Asian groups on the site, an administrator disabled them noting that "Whenever such material is reported to our support staff, we remove the abusive content."
Still, those who want to spread hate will continue to do so. In a quick perusal of the site recently, groups like "Nig Nig Niggers" and "Niggers aren't people too" were still active and seeking new members.
High Schools and Facebook
Although the students were already on summer break when Fox Chapel High School administrators were notified of the "Anti-Asians Anonymous" Facebook group, the school immediately contacted the parents, noting the seriousness of the students' actions.
"The district and I personally are disappointed and offended by these wrongful actions. We do not dismiss such actions lightly," said Superintendent Anne Stephens. She also noted, "This incident does not represent how the school population or the community population relates to diversity in Fox Chapel."
The students eventually took responsibility for the anti-Asian group and took it down. But Stephens noted the difficulty the school has had in disciplining students for activity conducted outside of school, especially personal involvement in networking sites like Facebook.
Whether or not Fox Chapel Area H.S. will take any disciplinary action against those students involved in creating "Anti-Asians Anonymous," those in the AA community believe it was because of their vigilance that this hateful group was taken off of Facebook. And it's something they will continue to do.
"If Fallout Central had not put a magnifying glass on what the students of Fox Chapel Area High School were doing, and if the Asian American community ... had not expressed disapproval of it by contacting the school's administrators, that networking group would be freely operating now," said Lee.

Fox Chapel students created anti-Asian Web site
By Charlie Ban
VALLEY NEWS DISPATCH
Monday, July 30, 2007
An Asian-American hate-crime watch group has accused a group of Fox Chapel Area High School students of racism for posting an anti-Asian Web site.
A student affiliated with the site said it was a joke that got out of hand.
"Anti-Asians Anonymous" surfaced on the social networking site Facebook several months ago and included the names of 16 Fox Chapel Area students who had joined. Asian-American Fallout Central, which operates a Web site designed to "mobilize Asian-Americans against the racism and prejudices facing us in the United States and beyond," posted pages from the Facebook group in June and urged critics to complain to school officials.
The Facebook group, which the Fox Chapel students have removed, contained postings about Asian stereotypes. It had ungrammatical and misspelled references to Pearl Harbor, chopsticks and anime. Included was a photo of an Asian man with a cartoon-style caption: "I ate your dog and I'm not sorry."
story continues below
Nine of those listed as members of Anti-Asians Anonymous will be juniors in 2007-08. Six will be sophomores and one graduated in 2007. A posting in April indicated the group had existed for about a year. The Tribune-Review is not disclosing the names of members who are minors.
The Web log's editor -- a Fox Chapel junior -- did not respond to a request for comment.
Fox Chapel Superintendent Anne Stephens said the district's computer system blocks access to Facebook, so the group must have been formed and maintained off school property. As a result, the district could not discipline the students, but high school Principal Ken Williams wrote letters to the students and their parents and spoke to all the participants.
Asian students account for about 5.4 percent of Fox Chapel's high school students and about 6.25 percent of the district's student body. Allegheny County is 1.9 percent Asian, and the state is 1.8 percent is Asian, according to the 2000 U.S. Census.
Stephens said there were no racial incidents involving Fox Chapel's Asian students in the last school year.
"Schools across the nation have not been successful in reacting to or punishing students for what they create outside of school," Stephens wrote in an e-mail to Fallout Central. "We can control what students do in school, but the law is not on our side when the actions they take are beyond the school day."
Facebook users post personal information and photographs and link to other users' profiles by adding them as "friends." Users can establish common interest groups and invite other users to join.
Brandon Elkins, 18, who graduated this spring, said he did not give a second thought to joining.
"There are a bunch of Facebook groups," he said. "People send out invitations and you just click on them.
"I just thought it was a joke. Everyone did. It just went a little too far. I don't think anyone in that group hates any group of people," he said. "I wasn't really involved with it. I never heard anything about it until I got a letter at home. Nobody ever talked about it at school."
In his letter to Fallout Central, Williams said the students involved are not known as troublemakers.
"Surprisingly (and disappointing to learn) some of those students have been seen as exceptional students while here," he wrote. "I guess this shows that even some of the 'best' kids can be insensitive and use poor judgment."
Wen-Ching Yang, president of the Pittsburgh chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans, said representatives of his group and similar ones throughout the area will meet with district officials in hopes of adding to Fox Chapel's diversity program.
"Perhaps they could add Asian history to the curriculum. We know they can't discipline the students, but it does reflect on the school district," Yang said.
"We would like to see if we could discover the sources of these sentiments. Is it dissatisfaction, like Toyota being more successful than General Motors? When you have these sentiments, they may evolve into hate crimes, so we want to nip these things in the bud."
Stephens said the schools would respond by encouraging tolerance and diversity.
"We're so limited in what we can do; we're better off to be proactive in the future. You can counsel students, but they still have freedom of expression."
Stephens said the district received no complaints from Asian-American students about the incidents. Several families of Asian-American Fox Chapel students contacted by phone said they had not heard of the Facebook group.
"There is healing that has to take place at school because this is where we gather," Stephens said. "It falls on the shoulders of the high school. We'll take that role on, but it has to happen 24/7, outside of school, as well."
